Callista smiled wide and hugged Valzar. "What if it tried to harm someone else? Would you protect them?"

Valzar winced and stiffened with the hug, "Well...I'm suppose to protect my mother - that's what I was born for. I'd also protect my sister...her mother too if needed." He glanced at her, "Are you sure you don't know my sister? You remind me a lot of her..."

Callista's smile softened. "That's sweet. It's good when boys protect girls. All of the males in my family are supposed to protect the females. Females are rare in our race."

"That means yes. You're just avoiding the truth." Callista was stiff. He couldn't just throw his life away! "You can't just throw your life away! I won't let you! You've got people to watch over. Like your sister!" She grasped his leg and hung on.

Callista's forehead crinkled. "Bu-But you can't protect someone when you're dead. Risking your life is no good. If you die, then that just gives your Priestesses more of a chance to die..." She sniffled. "If you die you leave everyone behind..."

"I just don't want you to get hurt. I don't like death. It scares me. The only good death is when you greet the dawn. I don't want you to greet the dawn, though. I like you." Callista's eyes were still watery. She had let go of Valzar's leg and scooted away, her back to him.

Valzar frowned, more than a little confused by everything the girl was saying. "I do what I have to do. I have to protect my mother...and my little sister. That is all I know..."

Callista turned back around. "I don't want you to die. Don't you understand that you can't protect them if you're dead. If you give your life prematurely, then that's it. You only have one." She took a deep breath. "Males always say they have to protect females. Sometimes it's good, but times like right now, when it makes males stupid, I think someone should hit them in their head." She walked over to Valzar and stood up on her hind legs. She took a hoof and started to bop him on the head. She fell over befoe she could get a hit in. "Ouch."

"Be careful," Valzar said nudging her back up. "And understand, to die in the act of defending a priestess is the best any male drow can do. Indoing so I would have protect her and served my duty. But as I said, I do not seek death. I train frequently and diligently to empower myself..."

"Ok." Callista frowned and looked down at the ground. "I'm sorry. I worry too much." She smiled and laughed. "I try not to though. It's not good to get attached to mortals." Her smile faded again and she walked over by a fir tree. The soft pine needles were a small comfort to her.
