Envy also helped with the dishes and such. She was taught if you cook the food you also need to clean up after. Never leave a mess or nasty little bugs will come and ruin your house. She didn't want that to happen at this house so she was the little helper bee. Then Fiero announced his intentions of going for a walk.

"Envy wish to walk. Go to graveyard?" The little Banshee always enjoyed walking, since Wendell did it a lot at night. This would give her a chance to visit her favorite place before returning to the strange new place to sleep. She hoped it would keep her from having nightmares again.

"We can go graveyard," Fiero agreed, interpreting for Korea.

Korea pushed her hair out of her eyes, leaving suds on her forehead. "I think I'll pass on the walk, and leave the two of you to it. I've got a bit of studying to do. Have fun, you pair."

Fiero had not expected Korea to accompany them, really. She used the time he was out walking to take care of things she didn't want to have him dealing with, such as bill-paying and such.

"Tell me when you are ready."

Invidia dried her hands and put the towel up to dry. She went into her room to grab a journal she had started writing it as well as her writing pad. She had been told by Wendell to never go outside without it. If she were ever seperated from him or Fiero, she wouldn't be able to communicate.

She brushed her unruly hair a bit, not that it looked any different but at least it wouldn't be knotted. Then she floated over to Fiero. "I am ready now. Where we go? Not just graveyard?"

"We go all around until you tired," Fiero replied as he saw her out the door.

Korea watched through the window as they went down the walk, reassuring herself that they would pass as well as possible, considering. Fiero wore trousers and moved them more or less like he had legs, rather than obedient ribbon-tendril-things. He still didn't simulate knee bends very well, but to the casual observer he would be all right. She worried every time he went out that he would be discovered and taken away to be studied, but she did not prevent him leaving. He was too dynamic a soul to be confined to her apartment.

Outside, Fiero waited until they reached the end of the walk and then asked Envy, "Which way? Left or right?"

Envy blinked a bit at the pants Fiero wore around his ribbons. She glanced down at herself wondering if she should be wearing something. But they were already outside and walking. She glanced around, hoping they wouldn't be stared at.

She looked both ways that Fiero offered to go then made a decision. "We go right." That was the way to the graveyard. She could feel it, how she did she didn't know. But it was that way.

"Okay," he signed. Then he said aloud, limited by his own ASL vocabulary, "You think it's strange that I wear jeans out and about? No. Likely you've figured out that I do it as camouflage, attempting to blend in with human beings."

He didn't ask why she'd chosen the right. He knew already that was the way to the graveyard, and assumed she had known that for herself, having been to visit with Wendell before, perhaps. He did not find it all strange that she should wish to travel in that direction, and in fact appreciated it. The walk to the graveyard was more interesting than the other direction, which would take them into town, though the playground where he had once played with Envy when she was an orb was located in that direction.

"Why blend in? You are not human." Envy understood being different, she had seen Wendell being picked on by different people. But Wendell was still human. If humans could not accept their own speices how could they accept them? She was hardly normal with her coloring. Fiero almost looked human but she doublted they would accept him.

Finally they reached the graveyad. Envy was all smiles as she floated around the graves. She stopped on a few and just sat on their gravestone. She actually spoke a bit, but very softly. It wasn't has horrible but what she was saying couldn't be understood.

"I try to blend in because humans do not easily accept things which are different, and I would not like to be an object of violence. I would not like Korea to suffer any of the difficulties which could arise from my discovery, either." He grinned. "It's easier to pass than you might think. Humans tend only to see what they expect to see, and they rarely expect to see anything but other humans."

At the graveyard, Fiero kept a respectful distance from Envy as she visited various graves. It did not, however, protect his sensitive ears from her murmurs. He could still hear her banshee's shriek, even toned down. It was nowhere near as devastating as it had been when first and last he'd heard it, but he still found himself with a pounding headache, which he felt he concealed rather well.

Personally, he had seated himself on a bench dedicated to some dead person or other whose name he could not quite make out on the marble placard below it. He thought it might, possibly, be something like Samantha Hayward, but he could not be sure. It didn't really matter, he supposed, except it seemed a trifle disrespectful to sit on a person's bench without knowing on whose bench he was sitting.

Envy continued her walk through the large and small stones when she looked over at Fiero. Despite his attempts to hide his discomfort, it was hard to hide the sligth shiver at the sound of her voice. Guilt and shame entered her heart as she realized she was hurting him. She couldn't even whisper without causing pain. She immediately stopped talking and continued her walk. Wendell was always listening to his music so he could tune out the horrible sound of her voice.

When she was done she floated over to Fiero and looked guilty at him. "I am sorry Fire-o. I hurt you. I not mean to hurt Fire-o. Envy not speak any more." She sat next to him and waved her ribbons back and forth like a kid kicking their feet when they are too short to touch the ground.

Fiero smiled. He was very good at smiling, no matter the circumstance. It was simply who he was. He preferred to smile, rather than frown, and to laugh rather than complain. Though he did his share of complaining. Some things warranted complaint, and it was one of the human traits he had not managed to avoid picking up in his associations with Korea and Ewan.

"Silly Envy. Speak when you want. I be fine. Is like bad radio." Well, not exactly, but he wasn't sure how to express the feedback from a microphone or a badly-tuned radio. It was the closest comparison he could make, and even then it did not do justice to the remarkable sounds Envy could produce.

"Really," he said, speaking aloud and purposefully ignoring her disdain for contact to tilt her chin up so she looked him more or less in the eye. "I will be fine, and if you need or want to speak, do it. You will never learn to control your voice if you never use it."

She didn't see him smiling at her, her gaze firmly fixed on the ground. Why did she always cause pain to people, even when they were nice to her. Why couldn't the curse end and just let her have peace. But no, she had to suffer forever. Always hurting those she cared about.

Her eyes were still filled with saddness when Fiero lifted her chin. It really hurt her that she had caused Fiero pain. Bad memories of screamsa nd blood entered her mind as she thought about causing others pain. "Envy no want her voice. Envy voice hurt people. No one happy when Envy speak. So Envy never speak. Only dead not hurt. Dead never hurt."
PostPosted: Sat Jun 28, 2008 8:48 pm

"I wouldn't know about the dead," Fiero admitted. "But I suspect that the rest of us would manage to get by if you decided to start speaking. Certainly, I've survived on more than one occasion, and my ears are more sensitive than most."

He didn't release her chin, guessing that the moment he did, she would suddenly become scarce, or at least put a great deal of distance between them which would make it difficult to hold the conversation which he felt really needed to be held.

"Furthermore, being in pain and being unhappy are two different, distinct things. A person can be happy and still be in a great deal of pain, take, for instance, those sports people who shatter their bones winning at a game which has no point except its entertainment value. They're absolutely thrilled to have won, even though they're physically in agony. I hear broken bones are very painful." He'd never had one, though only because his natural tendency was to float, and so it made falls less dangerous for him. He'd done a lot of falling in his youth.

"Finally, Envy, I believe you have all the necessary parts for speech - tongue, teeth, lips, lungs, and whatnot. If you weren't meant to speak, and only to screech, you would have lungs and an oriface for the sound to escape from, but none of the rest, since it would be unnecessary for the simple act of making noise. There is also a distinction to be made between speech and noise-making, and an important one."

Worn out from being helpful, Fiero released her from his grip and pushed his flyaway red hair behind his ears. He didn't like letting it fall over his ears, even though it let him blend in better with human beings, hiding the pointed tips of his ears. He also wasn't a huge fan of wearing garments, and although he wore jeans outdoors, he was usually topless, and usually utterly unclothed when at home.

Envy had tried to pull away a few times but Fiero kept her looking at him. So now she had to think about what he said. Darn him. Why couldn't she just be miserable? In her mind, she was meant for misery and saddness, but Fiero always made her feel better. She wondered if that would make the saddness later worse? Was it better for her to be sad all the time so she wouldn't hurt so much?

Finally Fiero said she was meant to speak, not just screetch like the creature she was. But how could she ever manage to learn to talk. Anyone who was around her could barely stand her whispering much less her natural talking volume. "How Envy learn speak when voice hurt? Envy not want hurt people. Hurt people bad. Make Envy bad."

She still feared being bad in another life. After what she had done it terrified her to no end what sort of punishment she would endure if she did something else bad in another life. That was why she had stayed away from everyone. That's why she was alone.

"Did you ever try to talk in a different tone, in a different register? You obviously have vocal cords, so you should be able to control what pitches you use when you speak. I'm not saying you have to speak if you don't want to, obviously, but practice could help you control it."

He floated away a little, not bothering to simulate a walking motion. Envy was the only other person there, and she knew what he was, so there was no reason to bother with any attempt at disguise. He had to think about how best to put the other thing he wanted to say to Envy.

"It isn't good to hurt people," he agreed. "But sometimes people can't help it, as in your case. You don't mean to hurt people, and that counts for something. It doesn't make you bad that you do hurt people."

He paused. "Some people are just dangerous by nature. A lot of people try to make others think they're dangerous, but they don't know what it's like to be truly dangerous, and how scary it is to have to worry about hurting others by accident. People like you have to learn to be careful, and it sucks - it sucks! - that you have to be careful so young, but you're doing a great job so far. You're not a bad person."

Envy listened to Fiero talk about how it sucked to be dangerous by nature. She sighed a bit. Dangerous by nature, that was an understatement for her. She wondered for a moment if she should tell Fiero why she was a banshee in the first place but decided against it. He would most likely hate her and abandon her.

"Envy try speak. But it hurt people. Envy not know how to change pitch." Strangely enough she wondered if watching people take singing lessons would help. They taught pitch, even if it was louder, and they taught voice control. Maybe that would work.

"Fire-o can Envy learn to sing? Sing is pitch. Maybe Envy do better if she learn to sing?" She looked to the older orb born for guidance.
