DM_Melkhar This is where writing and world creation gets technical. So, this is separate from the World Creation thread. It's quite different. Everyone who's a writer should join in on this because hopefully it'll help all of us get the clarity we need to be successful authors. Mmkay?
I'll be posting the first questions.
1.) I need to get a message from one character to another within a day or as soon as possible.
2.) These characters are between 1000 and 1500 miles apart.
3.) If someone walks at a normal pace, which is about 4mph, he/she can walk about 52 miles in 13 hours right?
4.) If you're travelling 50 miles to a town from the wilderness in freezing/snowy conditions, what kind of delay would you put on travel on foot?
5.) What kinds of birds besides geese can fly 1000 miles in a day at least? We're talking a bird carrying the message here.
Hence why I call this thread "the writer's workshop". Does magic apply to this?? I am just wondering though because i have magic and was wondering...

I wasn't sure whether this belonged in Arcane Academy - Gateways or here, so I'm taking a careful bet and posting it in the Workshop.
I've come across an idea to join my own world: Eithar, with ours: Earth, via means of ancient history, Magic, and Stonehenge. A legend states that the place is either collecting dark matter, or has a means of transporting between dimensions, or both: dark matter allowing access to a neighboring universe.
My problem is that I've been searching for a plausible reason to join the two places by a bridge, and when my thoughts turned to Stonehenge I almost literally leapt at the concept. My previous idea was using the Sun, but in choosing that, it would only prove more difficult for Mortals (humans, elves, dwarves, etc, all under new names) to access it vie Magic use.
So, here I propose my problem.
*Dragons were a worshiped race long ago on Earth, but did not have any liking of the destructive race they called Humans. In a last effort to leave Earth, they influenced the Druids to build a structure we know as Stonehenge. When construction was complete, the Dragons set about using their fluency with the three kingdoms of Magic: Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic, to form the gateway to another world.
*After the travel, the Dragons stumbled upon a clean, empty land created by some deity they chose to name Lord Yanto and Lord Arch. For over 2000 years, they flourished, content with their existence, until a rogue Dragon reformed the gateway to Earth, which had been long passed as myth except to the oldest of the creatures.
*This rogue Dragon returned to Earth within 1000 years of the changing of AD to BC, and collected a handful of disciples, ranging in size and age and build. It did not take long for the Dragons on Eithar to notice his absence, and quickly used their Magics to bring him back through Stonehenge. This event unwittingly brought the many Mortals whom he had gathered, which then split off into their own groups: Humans, Moy, Darii, Malia, Kytine, and Turlkey. These are the Mortal races of Eithar, and they brought with them false stories of grandeur and religion given to them by the rogue Dragon.
*Thus, Eithar passed into the B Era, and other creatures were made purely out of the Mortals beliefs and visions.
Okay. I'm finally done. If this made any sense, and if it was at all plausible, please do tell. If it needs work, and more detail, also don't hesitate to tell me. I want to find some bridge between Eithar and Earth, so if this doesn't seem to work and you can think of something more suitable, I would dearly appreciate being told.

drizzt-catstyle Ok I have a bit a of a tech flaw with part of my epilogue.
For a time most of the world is covered in a darkness, nothing inside of it could be seen with infared or thermal vision. Though light sources such as torches work fine.
I may have to change it if I don't find a good explination for it. Note: the darkness is the result of dark elf magic.
Any ideas? xp ♦ The usefulness of replying to a comment over a year old iiiss.. what now? Anyway here is what I'd do.
Create a completely new alternative light source. If your tale is set more modern then perhaps some scientist came up with a way to magnify the light a firefly makes naturally ONE. by making it so that they generally keep their butts on 24/7 (or just about, perhaps they have scheduled down periods for health reasons) perhaps a chemical alteration or just something to do with mating pheromones or a genetic alteration and TWO by creating a container that magnifies their light X amount. This device can have add ons that focus the light into thin beam a wide beam or just have it radial. because the bugs are small and numerous you can put them in any size container and they generally get along so no fights to worry about. :]] They breed fast too (or thats how you could spin it anyway)
the same can be used for a more midevil sort of setting just change out scientist for mage. ♦

Good ideas wolffy!
BTW, just in case anyone cares I've been writing more entries in my Kenshin Belmont journal. At least that's the only concept I've had time to write for. 3nodding
