Taelence was getting sleepy. It didn't help that she'd been running around for most of the night when she should have been fast asleep.
That's what I get, she thought. For chasing Kaze all over creation.
She lay down, put her head on her paws, and closed her eyes. She didn't see Kaze standing at the den door.

She turned and saw Taelence laying outside. It was time to go out. Kaze liked night time so much better. She wasn't so tired at night. She silently stepped out the door and walked in the direction of the lake.
As she walked along she sang. Louder then normally.
"You gotta be out there
You gotta be somewhere
Wherever you are
I'm waiting
'Cause there are these nights when
I sing myself to sleep
And I'm hopin' my dreams
Bring you close to me
Are you listening?"

Taelence opened one eye sleepily and watched Kaze walk towards the lake, singing.
Maybe I'm going on about this all wrong, she thought. Maybe I need to stop chasing her and just learn about her. That's better said than done though, since she refuses to talk to me.
She got up and moved silently into the undergrowth. She followed Kaze, making no sound. Perhaps a little recon would help her figure out the mysterious Angelic.

Kaze stopped, sensing Taelence's presence. She snapped her head in Tael's direction. She bared her teeth fully, and started growling. I'm tired of this! Just leave me alone!! If, the fox wasn't gonna give up, neither was she. Angrily, she pulled out her claws. Wanna piece of me?

s**t, Taelence thought. She knows I'm here. But maybe if I keep really quite she'll think she's mistaken and go on. It can't hurt.
So Tael stood there, not moving.
Stone, she thought. I'm as still as stone.

Kaze walked, snarling and growling loudly. She walked until she was in front of Taelence.
You wanna come out? Or do you wanna do it the hard way?
She turned her paw over, showing the untrimmed, sharp, razor-like claws.
It's up to you.

Taelence looked deeply into Kaze's eyes and turned so she exposed her side.
"Go ahead," she told the very pissed off fox, calmly and without fear. "But the moment you do, just remember, you've let them win. And you have nothing left of yourself."
Taelence braced herself for the pain. If it took being harmed to show Kaze that she wasn't afraid and she was willing to help, then Taelence would take as many blows as Kaze could dole out.

You're not worth it. Kaze backed up a bit, but didn't pull in her claws, or stop growling.
Whatever, you're just an ignorant fox who's pulled herself into my downward spiral. Well, I hope you know that, now that you're in it, there's no getting out. You're just gonna end up messed up like me Taelence. You shouldn't have gotten involved. You just shouldn't have. I'm better off alone anyway.

Taelence smiled the smallest bit.
"No?" she asked. "I didn't think so Kaze. I knew it. You're not gone, not completely. And you're not letting them win. Get back at them further. Show them Kaze, show them that they won't leave you broken, not now, not ever." Taelence held out her paw. "Let me help you, please."

Kaze stepped back a step. She took one of her claws and walked over next to Taelence. Ignoring her paw, she scribbled something in the dirt with her claw.
It said: Who's 'they'?

It took all Taelence had not to sigh in relief.
She's actually communicating with me even if she's only writing, she thought. Better than her running away.
Taelence read the small words.
"They, them. The ones who did this to you," she said, her eyes hard, not at Kaze but at the treatment she'd obviously endured. "They're monsters. I don't have to know who they are, just to figure that out."

Kaze listened and quickly dusted away the words in the dirt. She sat down and wrote: They weren't always that way... Didn't you hear me singing in the trees? I hopeless, a lost cause. I'm better off alone. I don't want to hurt others, but it's gonna happen to you. You shouldn't have gotten involved. It's a big downward spiral I'm stuck in. And now, you're stuck, too.
Her small cursive handwriting came out clearly in the dirt, since she wrote with her claw.

Taelence shook her head as she read Kaze's first words.
"You're right, I'm sure that they weren't, at first. But they obviously became that way, and that means that they weren't true to you in the first place. True loved ones don't do that to each other,"
Tael continued to read and couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.
"Kaze, I've been chasing you for most of the night. Do I look like I've been swept up in your downward spiral?" she touched Kaze lightly for a moment on the paw before quickly pulling away. "If you choose to be in a downwards spiral, you will be. I choose not to so, I'm not." kindness filled her voice. "You're not hopeless, if you don't want to be. Is that what you want? Do you really like feeling this way all the time?"

Kaze pulled back her paw quickly and set it back down. Her claws dug into the ground. She wiped away the last message and wrote: You don't understand! You're... you're just like everyone else. No one understands, and here I thought I could give you a chance to understand. But, I was right. You are just like everyone else.
Her claws dug deeper into the dirt furiously. She flicked her tail back and forth in anger. It took all her strength not to scratch Tael up and leave. Even Kaze herself didn't know how bad she would rip her up. In her mind, she wanted to leave her on the verge of life and death. To let her know what she went through. Let the fox have a little taste of Kaze's own past.

Taelence read the latest message and knew that Kaze would run away from her again.
"I'm not like everyone else Kaze. Can't you see that? How many others have tried to get closer to you? How many of them have tried to help you, honestly help you? And expect nothing in return?" Tael shook her head. "I don't want anything from you Kaze or expect anything from you. I just want you to be happy. And I don't think you are. You can rip and claw me to shreds, do whatever you like. But I'm still going to come back and try to talk to you, to try and help you. To..." Taelence struggled for words. "To make that horrible feeling go away. The one where you feel like the floor is dropping out from beneath you and no matter how hard you try, you can't seem to stop it."
