Juillet had been quite happy with her time with Kami. He'd been sweet and valiant... So when they had summoned amulets together, she was proud. Though the house was already becoming crowded, Juillet brought the amulet to her human. Lural at first wasn't too keen on summoning another demon. But Juillet kept pressing. This was her child after all. It took a few days of pressing and convincing and pleading. Juillet would never harm Lural to force her to summon the demon child, but she also would not let this drop. Finally, Lural relented. She cupped the tawny demon's face and smiled. Juillet had always been loyal and kind, so Lural agreed to summon her child. With a drp of blood and a little waiting, the amulet burst into ash and called forth a dark red male. Juillet was thrilled.
The little male was not. After he took stock of his surroundings, he tested out his legs and stood. He stared at the large female demon, then the human, then walked off. That was unceremonious at best. Juillet was about to thank the human when the smoke alarm went off.
The new demon had found the kitchen, and it hadn't taken him long to figure out how to turn on the stove. A bag of bread was on the burner smoking away. By the time the fire was put out and the damage to the stove assessed, the demon child was gone. Juillet was going to have her hands full with this one.
It was the child's penchant for mischief and fire, that earned him the name März.

Peridot bound ahead of Lural down the beach. She was splashing in the shallow waves, enjoying everything about the beach. The water, the sand between her toes, the smelly kelp, and even the crab that tried to pinch her face, Peri just giggled and shooed it off on it’s way. Lural watched with amusement as she was almost acting like a puppy.
But that was just how Peri was. She was sweet and innocent, and didn’t have a hint of her mother’s grumpy meanness.
“Are you having fun?” Lural asked as she walked closer, scanning the beach for shells or other treasures to take back. Peridot nodded vigorously.
“I LOVE coming to the beach! I love swimming. I wish mama would come to swim with me sometime. But you know how she hates water. And daddy’s not around much right now, so I can’t even swim with him.” She gave a faint ‘hermph’ sound, trying to pout, but she was in too much of a good mood, and so raced on along the beach. Lural chuckled and shook her head.
“Don’t go too far.” She said, walking up the beach a little more to where several tree-sized pieces of driftwood had been washed up years ago, and just sort of… remained. She sat down and stretched, thinking this might be a good place to sit and sketch while Peridot went swimming.
“She looks very happy.” Said a little voice beside her. Lural jumped and her head swiveled to the side where she spotted a small orange body, looking out after Peridot. “She’s so lucky.” The small demon turned to look up at Lural. The child had soft lavender eyes and stringy blond tendrils for her mane. “I’ve wanted a human for myself for a long time.”
“You don’t have one?” Lural was a little surprised. Most demons, if she remembered correctly, needed a human bond in order to remain in this plane of existence. The girl shook her head.
“I was summoned by someone, but I never met the person. I tried to find them, but I’m too little. And over time, I’ve felt this ache in my chest as the bond has grown weaker and weaker. I think soon I’m going to go back. Back to the other side. To the Everafter. And I’ll just stay there... If I’ll even still exist. I don’t know what will happen.”
Lural felt her heart break a little as she listened to the child. Who could ever not want such a darling little thing? Well, she was a demon. And if the human who called her didn’t know... “I’m sure everything will be alright.” She reached out and put her hand on the young demon’s head. “Things will work out for you in the end, I’m sure of it.”
The sad lavender eyes looked up at Lural as the girl tried to force a smile. “Yeah, you’re probably right. Can… can I stay with you? At least for a little while? And pretend you’re my human? You’re nice... it would only be while you’re still here. I won’t be a burden, I promise.” Again, the heartbreak at the sweet child’s words.
“Sure. You can stay with me as long as you like.” She began to pet the girl’s head. She could feel a soft rumble as she did, and the girl laid down, her head in Lural’s lap, content to pretend she was wanted.
Peridot came running back over, kelp hanging all over her as she slid to a stop by the driftwood where Lural was sitting. “LURAL! You’ll never guess what I found in that tide pool!” She half shouted until she spotted the little girl. The small demon had fallen asleep, curled up tightly against Lural’s leg. “Aaaaw, she’s so cute...” Peri lowered her voice. “Can we keep her?” She looked up at Lural like a child asking for a pet.
“I don’t know. The girl said she lost her bond. She doesn’t think she’ll be staying in this realm much longer.”
“That’s so sad! Maybe this will help!” Peri pawed at the kelp on her back before pulling it off. She rooted around inside the green mess before finding what she wanted. An amulet. It was soggy and smelled a little, and there were still strings of plant stuck to it. “I found it over there in the tide pool.” She pointed with a paw before picking up the amulet and placing it on Lural’s lap. “It sort of feels the same as that girl. I think it’s hers. If she had been summoned, and her bond was lost, maybe the goddess wanted to give her a second chance, and dropped her amulet back into this realm in the hopes that someone would find it and save her!”
“It’s worth a shot. This little thing is such a sweet heart.” With the amulet still in her lap, Lural bit her thumb so it would bleed, and smeared the blood over the amulet. After a moment, the amulet melted into a puddle of goo on her pants. “Oh shi-”
She was cut off as the small demon at her side lifted her head. “Wha? Oh, you’re still here. Thank you!” She stood and shook herself. “You know what? I feel a lot better now. And I feel a pull again. To a human! It’s really REALLY strong! And you know what?” She bumped her nose to Lural’s arm. “I think the pull is to YOU!” She jumped off the log and pranced in the sand a little, walking around. “YUP! No mater what, I feel a pull that’s always aimed for you!”
“Eeeee! I have a new friend!” Peridot squealed. “Come on! Let’s play in the water a little more before we have to go!”
“OK!” The girl sure was full of energy now. And as she ran off into the shallow waves with Peridot, her antics reminded her of some of her friends.
Kind of like Sakura. Kind of like Cricket too. I know. I’ll call her Sakit. Perfect namesake for those two little deviants too.

A truck.
That’s what it felt like. Getting hit by a truck.
And Lural thought she was going to die. There was enough blood, that’s for sure. What exactly happened was beyond her, but now she was laying in a pool of her own blood and couldn’t find the strength to get up.
Dying wasn’t so bad though. It was quiet, and the sun was still shining, so she was warm. If the grass wasn’t damp, it would be a pleasant place to take a nap. Lural’s eyes slid closed. good bye world.
A shadow moved across her face, and she could feel something… staring at her. It was an intense, uncomfortable stare, so she slowly opened an eye. Looking down at her were a pair of sapphire blue eyes. The creamy flesh-colored face was framed by bronze and gold. Slight movement alerted Lural to the wings possessed by this being.
“So I really am dead. Are you an angel then?”
“What in Valhalla are you talking about, human?”
Valhalla? “Oh, you’re a Valkyrie. My apologies. You must have the wrong soul. I’m not a warrior.”
“Humans sure are dumb.” Slowly the face lowered and Lural felt a rough, sandpapery tongue on her cheek. “There is no way a human like you could ever by worthy enough to take to Valhalla. I’m waiting for a special warrior. But you appeared to be in need of aid, so here I am.” The valkyrie lay down beside Lural. The way she moved… Lural found it odd, but yet familiar as she felt the comforting warmth beside her. “Go back to sleep. When you wake again you will be fine.”
She had drifted off, and the next thing Lural knew, she came flying bolt upright with a start and looked around. “I’m still here. I’m still alive.”
“Of course you are. I said you would be better when you woke.” Lural looked at the form beside her. The woman’s voice belonged to…
The strangest valkyrie Lural had ever seen. She was laying there like a cat. Her hair was more of a mane, and braided as it came out from below her helmet. Looking over the woman, it hit Lural.
“You’re a winiko.”
“And you’re a human. Now that we have that established, I am called Harpa, and I’ve taken a liking to you. You’re pretty brave to shelter others like me. I’m mildly impressed. So, while I wait for my warrior, I’m going to be beside you.”
“Oh… that’s nice.” Lural was still trying to piece together what happened. “So… I almost died?”
“Yup.”
“How?”
“You’re a human. You all die eventually, one way or another. Does it really matter how you die?” Lural sighed and rolled over. It was pretty much dark out now, so Lural pushed herself up and stood, quite shakily.
“I’ll show you ‘home’ then…”
How many demons does it take to kill a human? One day, Lural shall find out.

It wasn’t that Lural was hiding it, she just didn’t advertise to everyone that today was her birthday. As soon as you mention the “B” word, people assume they have an obligation to give you things, or to be extra nice. So she kept it mostly to herself. Some of her closer friends remembered, and they pretty much knew that Lural didn’t want any sort of fuss over her on this day. But when she stepped outside in the morning, and saw the package on her front step, wrapped in orange paper, with a red and yellow mess of ribbon on top, she smiled. There was no note attached to the outside, no card, and no one around.
A surprise present? How lovely. She took it inside and set it on the coffee table, looking at it a moment, trying to think who it was from. ‘There’s no duct tape, so it can’t be from her… and the ribbon isn’t all sorts of eccentric crazies… So it couldn’t be from…’ Finally she just decided to open it. As the ribbon came off, she had a sudden very bad feeling about this, eyeing the package. What if this was a prank? A pie, or some powder could explode all over her as soon as the box was opened. She slid off the couch and knelt by the table. She was partially ducking below the table as she picked at the wrapping paper.
Jun came walking out of the den and saw her human behaving oddly… again, and her brow furrowed in a frown. Lural didn’t even seem to see her, attention was so fully focused on that box. Maybe it was because she was bored, or perhaps it was because she hadn’t done this in a long time, but Jun leaped at Lural, knocking her to her side and started biting at her arms. Not hard enough to really hurt, but enough to make her bleed, and to piss off the human. Their tussle knocked over the table, and the package fell in the midst of their scuffle. It got flattened, and shredded in the fight. Neither Lural nor Jun noticed the object inside as they rolled over it several times.
Finally, Jun relented, and stopped. They both sat up and glared at each other.
“Happy birthday, Human.” Jun sneered.
“Would have been happier if you hadn’t attacked me.”
“Be happy that I stopped.” Touché. Jun did have a point there. Lural leaned back against the couch, catching her breath a moment before she remembered what she was doing.
“Where’d that box go?” Lural looked around, and found shreds of the paper, and brown cardboard around her. She sighed and got on her knees to start picking up the shreds. Among the debris was what looked like a simple white piece of paper. Lural picked it up and turned it over.
Happy Birthday, Lural. Take care of this, ok?
-Pan
Take care? Take care of what? There wasn’t anything on the floor but the over turned table, shreds of the package, and a very smug looking Jun. Lural sighed. Whatever Pan had sent, it was gone now.
“Thanks a lot Jun.”
“You’re welcome.” Jun replied, not sure what she had done, but delighted that it seemed to make Lural mad. Jun’s ears perked up, and angled forward.
A squeak.
“Did you hear that?” She demanded. Lural shook her head.
Shuffle
“But that I heard.” Lural got up and looked over the back of the couch as Jun stood, and walked beside the couch to inspect the noise. Laying there, gnawing on the curly ribbons and getting tangled in the curls as he batted at them, was a yellow and orange winiko child. Lural and Jun shot each other a glance.
“Look what you did!” They both accused each other.
“Me? You’re the one who opened the box.”
“Opened? You’re the one that mauled me, opening the box AND making me bleed!” The little boy looked up at Lural, then to Jun, then back down at the ribbon, and promptly threw up. There were bits of ribbon and paper in the mess that came out and both ladies cringed.
“Eeeew…”
Welcome to the family, Johai.
