Courier Angel Kokoroki ok (SAME DIFFERENCE rofl ) 2. Italian resembles latin most not Romanian proof sad Complete idiot's guide to Italian says it) and cool but I don't even know very many romanian words Well it really depends on who you ask. If you Google it right now, you will see many different results. Some say Romanian, some say Italian, and some even say Portugese. But I still stand by my statement. First of all, it was documented that in the times of the Roman Empire, whevener Rome held meetings between its territories, the Romanian people were to only ones who did not need translators. Furthermore, 75-85% of the Romanian language comes from Latin. And finally, you can find out more here. Actually I was going to disagree with that. I have tried my hand at both Italian and Romanian and perhaps it's just because I've started on both OR just because, but Romanian seems more like Latin. I'm entering into my third year of Latin and when flipping through my "Learn Romanian" book, I found it was easier to understand from my Latin background. I STILL cannot figure out Italian at ALL.

Yes. And to refer back to Chadny's comment, this doesn't have anything to do with who spoke how ("vulgar latin was spoken by the simple people like the soldiers"). This has nothing to do with that. What it has to do with is when each were spoken. Vulgar latin came at a later period than classic latin.

Salutare din Romania! Ma bucur sa vad cate persoane sunt interesate de limba romana si voi incerca sa raspund la intrebarile voastre (tinand cont ca traiesc in Romania...)
Greatings from Romania! I'm glad to see how many people are interested in the Romanian language and I'll try to answer your questions (considering I live in Romania...)
Am uitat sa ma prezint.... Ma chiama Ioana si sunt incantata de cunostinta.
I forgot to introduce myself...My name is Ioana and it's a pleasure to meet you.
Now...lets answer some questions:
Yes, 'Dracula' actually meens 'son of the dragon'. It comes from the order of the dragon that Vlad the Impaler's father was a member of and it's been already mentioned that the true story of Dracula isn't anything like Bram Stoker's book.
Romanian is derived from vulgar Latin (as are all other romance languages) because, although the administration spoke propper Latin, the soldiers, the colonists and the merchands spoke popular Latin or vulgar Latin (take it frome someone who has to heare this speech twice every year and needs to know it for an exam) and it most resambles Latin because we were cut off from the Roman Empire by the Slavs (some slavic words filtered into Daco-romanian and this is how you get Romanian. The other Romance languages were faced with various waves of migrating people thus receaving more influences. (I'm not saying those people didn't pass through here as well, it's just that they didn't hang around very long - except for the Slavs)
sweatdrop That's what you get because I had a test on it today redface
For those who want to know some useful phrases: Hello = Salut/Buna Good bye = Pa/La revedere I love you = Te iubesc
Just ask about what you want to know sweatdrop
btw. 'Dragostea din tei' is one one of the few O-Zone songs I like smile

I knew that Romanians were connected to the Roman Empire... it shows in a verse of the Romanian national anthem (which, by the way, is awesome mrgreen ) -
Now or never let's give proof to the world That in our veins still flows Roman blood, And in our hearts forever we glorify a name Resounding of battle, the name of gallant Trajan!
As of recent, Romanian has been added to my list of languages to learn. whee

Romanian has been on my list of thoroughly awesome languages for some time. I must learn it! I voted for it as the Language of the Month.

Romanian is currently winning the Language of the Month vote. It's even beating languages I'd consider more popular like French and Spanish!

I just learned what Romanian is. Why is it that is seems less well known than the others? Every high school in america has spanish and french, I guess because out neighbors speak those languages, but everyone knows what italian is, portugese seems less well known, but everyone knows of it. But romanian, its like the lost sibling of the romance languages. Nobody really talks about it or knows it exists it seems. It might just be the area I live in, but why is that the other romance languages seem so much more well known than poor little romanian?

I still count Romanian as one of the "big five" Romance languages (the little three are Catalan, Occitan and Galician, plus a smattering of languages that are spoken even less).
But it's not very popular. It's such an awesome language, though!
I mean, I adore the French language, but I do agree that Romanian is cooler.

Few people know that Romanian is a Romance language because they associate it with slavic languages, the country's location being the main reason why. Also, Romanian has indeed been influenced by a lot of slavic languages as well as Turkish, making it more complex than all other romance languages. Romanian even sounds slavic, it doesn't sound latin unless you have a good ear.

And I love the sound of Slavic languages. heart
People with Romanian accents sound very Slavic indeed. It's difficult to tell.
Romanian is the only Romance language that's maintained a declension case, right?:O
Declensions are awesome.
