Hanabira wiggled her nose from side to side in a circular motion, making her glasses shift around so that her eyes could not read the text on the page. Her could was making things difficult. It was becoming an annoyance to her. She let out a small sigh as she kept her hands underneath the table wrapped up in the warm blanket. The flower printed fabric engulfed the little girl, swallowing her up like a big comfy monster. The warmth was making her a bit sleepy too. She felt her head nod off slightly before suddenly jerking up. Reaching out for her glass of water, she took a sip, hoping that the cold water would wake her up just a bit. Then, heaving a sigh she went back to reading about the telomere which determined the lifespan of a cell in the body. Everytime the cell split, the telomere would as well, shortening the cell's life by half every time. If Tenmoki knew what determined the life of a cell, why hadn't she figured out the key to immortality? Turning the page, Hanabira pondered on about that thought...

Kane woke up with a clear head for what seemed like the first time in forever. He was sure that it wasn't, but no need to ruin the mood by pointing out truths that nobody wanted to hear. Although it wasn't early anymore - actually it was about the normal time people woke up - the house was silent. Kane guessed that his mother was probably taking a break since she had probably been worrying about him all this time... and Hana-chan was probably sleeping. Careful not to wake them, Kane stepped softly to the bathroom and cleaned himself up before going down to breakfast. Or, to be more correct, to make himself breakfast.

Kane didn't think himself particularly hot at cooking - he thought Hana made the better onigiri, actually - but if there was one thing that he felt master in, it was plain scrambled eggs. Screw the confusing mixtures, with ham and mushrooms and cheese and onions and peppers and whatnot, just keep it simple. Peeking in the fridge he deftly plucked out two eggs and set about making himself a wholesome breakfast. Grabbing a bowl from the cupboard, he cracked the eggs and set them aside, and heated the pan.

While the pan was heating (which wasn't very long, Kane took a pinch of salt and pepper from the containers and mixed them with the raw egg. Since the pan was a non-stick pan, Kane didn't need to add oil, and go that he figured. He'd never liked the slimy feeling of oil. Testing the heat of the pan with a quickly withdrawn finger, Kane dumped the egg in the pan in one swift motion. He swirled the pan slowly in a circular motion, spreading the egg all over the pan. He would have to be very careful not to mess up on this step because this step would affect the consistency and the taste of the egg. Nobody wanted to eat overcooked scrambled eggs. Was it time... maybe a little longer. Kane turned the pan 45 degrees to the right experimentally and the egg crumbled down immediately. That was the right one. It wasn't runny; too raw to be dangerous, and wasn't too hard either. Satisfied, he turned off the flame.

With that done, Kane turned the pan upside down abruptly and the egg splattered unceremoniously onto the large plate that he'd placed to catch it. Even though it looked gross, Kane didn't really care about presentation (he only cared about that for people) and its near runniness was exactly was he wanted anyway. He knew that spraying the hot pan with cold water immediately would eventually break it (although that hadn't stopped him from trying in his youth) and so decided to wash up later. Leaving the pan on the stove and quickly putting the various plates and bowls into the sink, he brought his plate to the kitchen table and poured himself a glass of water. He'd eat his breakfast slowly, just enjoying his awesome cooking, while waiting for his family to wake up. If they weren't awake by the time he was done he would just wash up and leave... somewhere. To train. Yeah.

Finishing his last bite of egg with relish, Kane got up to do the dishes. He accomplished this quickly in the style of a true family man and was just about to go up to his room to pack his day pack (since he'd intended on finding a secluded lagoon somewhere and just train), but was distracted by a commotion outside. A large throaty growl reverberated from outside to within the shop and caused chills to run up and down Kane's back. He opened the blinds a tiny slit with his finger and stuck his head out of the window, seeing a huge brutish man - the huge brutish man, actually, THE Dhan and what appeared to be a little girl and her dog. Kane's brow furrowed. That man was damned scary. But Dhan was unpredictable and you didn't know what he would do. It was suicide, but Kane went out to help the girl.

As her thoughts of immortality continued on as she read, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together, Hanabira let something else enter her mind. It had been quite a long time since she had seen any of her friends and an even longer time since she had attended the academy. She had spoken with her brother Kane very much nor Miss Yamanaka... Taking off her glasses and wiping them on the soft cloth on the inside of her sleeve, she took a moment to let her mind rest. Once she was finished reading, perhaps she would go out into the village and see what Shin and Serena had been doing. Maybe she would even go talk to that Kiba boy she had only an accquaintance with? After making her decision to become a little more social, Hanabira turned back to her book.

Hanabira took a second take at the words on her page. There she was again. Her olive eyes were scanning the word and processing them to her brain, but her brain just wasn't registering them and paying close attention. The freckled face girl had almost read half a page before she realized what she was doing. Taking a sip of tea from the now cool cup that had been sitting on the table since morning, Hanabira focused herself on her task and continued to read about the mutation of Telomere within the body, which created tumors. As she read the description of tumors, she thought of all the men with strange bumps on their heads. Were those tumors? The book said that these growths were lethal and shortened one's lifespan considerably. They also could cause a person to not function correctly. Daily tasks could even prove difficult if the turmor ventured towards the brain and disrupted nerves. Hanabira felt a twitch of fear of this uncontrollable mutation in the body. There was no way to prevent it and it could happen at any time.

Hanabira read back to make sure what she had read was correct. Wait, that wasn't tumors, it was cancer. Or was it tumor? Hanabira sighed and rubbed her temples. She was indeed having a hard time with this book. She imagined this book on Telomere that Tenmoki had written to be far above her level. It was a challenge going through this book. There were even words she had gone back to the hospital to ask the nurses about. Mitosis, cell separation and many more things she had to ask about in order to under the concepts of this book. But through the process, Hanabira felt that she understood the body much better and even had a theory worked out on how Tenmoki's healing techniques worked. Maybe, she should put off visiting her friends for one more day and instead visit the clinic to begin learning the medical techniques. But was she prepared for them? Was Hanabira an able shinobi to learn such techniques yet? Tenmoki Aya, one who excelled in things such as ninjutsu, learned the healing technique when she was a genin. Hanabira was only a student at the academy... There was no way that this little adopted Yamanaka girl could learn such techniques at this age...

Folding up her book and straightening it out in front of her, Hanabira had to admit that she was not prepared to learn advanced medical techniques. She excelled in her knowledge, but her control was lacking. A technique she could do well in was genjutsu. She was very good at her bunshins and henge. Hanabira thought about her abilities and compared them to all the other students she knew. Everyone else seemed to be very good in physical exercises and those charismatic games they always played in class. Hanabira failed dearly at the lying game... If there were only a technique to help boost her confidence when speaking others, but she couldn't think of a thing. Was she just not all that intimidating? But why would she want to be intimidating. She thought of that Kun Kumo girl when she thought of intimidation. Hanabira wanted to give off her own personality, which was sweet, kind and always yurning to help someone. She thought of Serena when she thought of sweet and kind. Serena had a little tough edges to her though. Hanabira had trained with the Raiken girl a lot and knew about her toughness and determination. Hanabira had a lot of determination, but she wasn't very tough at all and she had no desire to be....

Kane arrived home with an empty backpack (food and water being completely depleted) and wooden bokken strapped over his back, and inhaled the rich scent of the plum flower, probably being worked into some sort of soup or stew. His stomach grumbled in anticipation as he thought of what could possibly be coming up. Maybe sweet and sour steamed pork, or soup, or maybe in dessert? Plums with dates and sago in water sounded really good right now. Actually, anything sounded good right now, as long as it didn't have tomatoes in it. Maybe his mum was making ume-shuu, although that was probably not happening. Who would she give that alcohol to? The two underage kids in her house? Although one would be turning legal tomorrow... That thought made Kane smile, as did the thought that he'd finally be getting his dao. It was no secret that he would get it since all the Yamanaka males before him had got one upon reaching 16, although Hide has been skipped what with the whole mind control fiasco and all... Kane's smile abruptly disappeared.

He stepped into the house and noticed the distinct lack of Hanabira. For a moment he was worried, but after greeting his mother and asking about her he found out that she'd spent all day in her room. Doing what they both didn't know, but Kane didn't want to disturb her figuring that she's finish whatever she was doing and come out eventually, still the same. Dinner still needed a while, so Kane went up to get himself cleaned up. Or not.

Still feeling raring to go, Kane decided that his room was of a decent size for practice. He was eager to practise the moves learned from the training with Hamma while they were still fresh and decided to do so. A shower could wait till after dinner.

The need for a warm-up was painfully evident as one of Kane's muscles spasmed a little during his first action. However he ignored it and kept going. It was exactly how one treated a stitch, after all. You ignore it and keep going, although you drop your pace a bit. That would be your warm up. He continued to do the different actions, making sure to get them 100% right. One of his only memories that had survived from his mainland education was that no matter how prepared you in a peaceful situation, the enemy would take your muscles by surprise. You could decrease the amount of surprise by practising, and practising, more and more. Although Kane wasn't shooting for 1000 repetitions he did intend to do at least 70 to 100. 10 thrusts, then 10 cuts, then 10 blocks, then 10 slashes, and then repeat, 7 to 10 times.

Kane finished his first repetition and started on his second one with gusto. He hadn't really felt a eureka moment yet but figured that inefficient training (not incorrect, but inefficient) was better than no training at all. As he did the last of 10 thrusts he progressed to cuts. Now that he thought about it training his thrusts was pretty useless since the dao wasn't a piercing weapon anyway. But he might as well improve his basic skills since he may be forced to use another weapon in the future. If his dao was stripped from him, or if he had to disarm an opponent or fight against someone that used a piercing sword, this knowledge would be useful in the future. Kane focused more on his cuts though, since that was directly relevant to his study of the dao.

And now he moved on to blocks. Although Kane really preferred just dodging the dao, as a dead weight, would only hinder his efforts. He may as well learn to use it effectly to complement his dodging. As he practised many scenarios where he used the dao to block while his body twisted away from the imminent attack ran through his head.

The last of his second repetition of 10 was the slashes and Kane did that carefully too. Now that he was more confident about his technique he may as well focus on speed. Hey, if he managed to do it faster he'd be able to fit more practice in less time. Although he shouldn't be greedy now and just let his sword skills naturally improve. Kane wondered if he'd be able to look back to this memory in the future and smile at how bad he was. The thought that he'd look back and wistfully think about how good he had it then instead didn't cross his mind. Now halfway through his third repetition Kane focused on his cuts again. Each different movement really had its individual merit, he realised. Cuts were careful and if you missed, you'd be able to recover quickly. On the other hand, slashes, although causing high damage, were messy and if done too passionately would cause one to lose their balance. And thrusts only worked with straight weapons with a sharp point. Well, not really, but it was a lot harder to stab with a curvy weapon like the dao or katana than it was to stab with say, a sai. But Kane was digressing now, like always. He focused back on his training, noting with a small tinge of disappointment that his rhythm had slowed because of his thinking.

Kane started his 3rd set of 10 slashes, methodically working his way through them. 1... 2... 3... 4... 5.. 6.. 7, 8, 9, 10. Each movement was deliberate and precise. With his previous brainwave Kane was careful not to overstep his boundaries literally, so that a failed slash would become a way to lose his balance. He was almost halfway through his training if he only decided to do 7 reps, but that would depend on how long dinner took to make, really. A sneak glance at the clock revealed that just under 10 minutes had passed. He had lots of time and he started his fourth repetitions, still going strong. He reflected on how his endurance had really improved as a couple of months before he would be panting a little after this.
