After a long moment during which Watch considered, he replied, "I'd say one and a half, maybe two miles. We've gone a long way..." Watch let his sentence trail off as he glanced at Letter. He wondered if she was getting tired, though he didn't dare bring up the subject, for fear that she would assume that he was tired, or worse, she might get offended for underestimating her capabilities. But would it be worse to chance being inconsiderate and not asking, therefore perhaps forcing her to fly longer and harder than was healthy? Watch was in a predicament, and he didn't like to risk offending his new-found friends.

Finding a solution quite suddenly, Watch asked lightly, "Say, want to go visit that meadow down there? It's all right if you'd rather continue flying, but I expect that there will be some tasty berries and maybe some nuts down there. And," Watch continued as he saw that the meadow was not too far from a human fast-food restaraunt, "perhaps there will be some 'Frenk fr-eyes' as well. Have you ever had one?" Watch had, a while back, tasted a french fry, and it was delicious. So salty, greasy, and starchy. Watch didn't know it, but he had experienced a salted fried potato, in all its glory. (Though it had been slightly dirty from being dropped on the ground...)

Letter looked down at the ground as she soared behind Watch. She spotted the still damp green meadow he had been talking about, and the fast food restaurant, still crammed with humans hiding away from the cold. To be honest Letter was fine from the stop they had taken in the rain, despite the wet and cold. When Letter was headed in a certain direction, she made sure that she would reach her destination with her mind and energy in her wings completely set on it. She had a gentle soul, but was a fairly hardy pidge on the outside who could take a buffeting of wind. She had more stamina than speed.

"I have ta say, I don't think I've ever 'eard of a frank, ri-ei, I mean fro, um, frayi. Frenk fy-eye. There we go." She said and laughed, partly at the strangeness of the human word, and partly at her own ridiculous struggle with it. She smiled reassuringly and appreciatively at Watch, feeling a true likening for him. He was so kind and generous, inviting her to his home on first meeting, and pointing out good places to feed. She would always repay the kindness of her new friend. "No, but thank you Watch. It's a wonderful offer, but I'm fine just flyin' on, unless you're hungry?" She asked. "I'll wait, or we can just keep flyin' to your tree if you like." She offered.

"Oh, let's keep going," Watch said easily. "I'll find you a frenk fr-eye some other day." Watch nodded briskly and continued flying. At this rate, they'd be there soon! Home at last. The idea was more delicious than those "frenk fr-eyes"! Watch could almost smell the sweet damp moss of his precious tree. "Hey, Letter," Watch asked suddenly. "Do you know any good riddles? I love a good riddle. I have a few myself!"

"A riddle eh? I find riddles a lot of fun." She said brightly. "Hm, now let me see." She began, thinking of any old riddles. She hadn't had a riddle challenge with anyone in a while. "Ah, ok here we go." She said exited that she had thought of one and the challenge could begin. "Let's start off easy.

The part of the bird
That is not in the sky,
Which can swim in the ocean
And always stay dry.
What is it?"

She swooped under Watch as she waited patiently for his reply.

"Hmm..." Watch murmured. It was a long time since anyone had challenged him, as well. The last time he had told or heard a riddle was when he was a mere fledgeling. "Let's see... A part of a bird that is not in the sky. Well, it could be a molted feather. I'll get back to that. It can swim in the ocean and still stay dry... Not that feather, then." Watch fell silent for a few minutes, then grinned. "Its shadow!" he exclaimed. "It stays on the ground and never gets wet!" Watch looked down at Letter to see if he was right.

Letter nodded enthusiastically. "That's right! Well done Watch. I remember it was one of the first riddles I ever heard. Now, do you have a good riddle for me or would you like another?" She asked with a smile, glancing back at Watch as they continued to soar forwards. She enjoyed riddles and wondered what riddles Watch had to tell. Once told they could be told and shared again with others. A riddle was a very good thing when there was not much to do.

"I've got one," Watch said, doing his best to sound grim and not succeeding. "This one is a bit difficult: Food can help me survive, but water will kill me. What am I?" Watch then proceeded to dive beneath Letter, copying her action from before. Riddles are great, Watch thought to himself. I love to try to work them out... It really makes you think. Watch flirted his tail feathers in the wind that allowed him to speed up. Home was still fresh in his mind!

Watch puzzled over this for a while. "What has a mouth, but does not chew." She repeated to herself slowly to try and understand it better. "All creatures with mouths chew..." She said mostly to herself. "Unless they swallow it in one go, or if they're a worm. But that's not my answer." Said Letter as she thought harder. Wot could it be? "Unless... Unless," Began Letter, her eyes lighting up as she gripped her idea, "Unless it isn't a livin' creature but an object." After a few seconds Letter grinned triumphantly, "I know now, a river!" She excalimed delighted to have found the answer. "Is that right?"

"Yes!" Watch said. "Now, do you have one, or should I go again?" Watch's eyes gleamed with mischeif that had never been there before. He flew level to Letter and looked at her. She was quite brilliant, wasn't she? Watch always enjoyed smart friends. They made conversations much more interesting.

Letter gazed back at the amazingly inked pidge with a similar glint in her own eyes. "Yes, I'm sure I have another. Let me think." She eventually remembered one, and spent another few seconds trying to remember its rythm. That was the thing that was sometimes hard to remember. "Ok.

Black within, and red without
With four corners round about.

What is it?" She said and looked towards Watch once more. This one was more challenging.

"Hmm..." Watch replied. He fell silent, working it out. "I can't think of anything that we use like that, so it must be a human thing!" Watch declared. "It's black on the inside, red on the outside, and has four corners all around. Let me see..." A picture of a human house popped into Watch's mind. On it, was a red thing... "Aha!" Watch said. "If i can think of the name... Chim-neey? I've never been inside one, but black stuff comes out of it. Right?" Watch tilted his head in Letter's direction. And I've got a good one, Watch thought silently.

"Correct!" Said Letter happily. Watch seemed to be good at riddles. "Well done Watch, you did better than I did first try on that riddle." She flapped her wings to get some air so she could glide back level with Watch easily again. "Have yer got another one for me?" She questioned. She was thoroughly enjoying her little riddle challenge with Watch.

"I sure do!" laughed Watch. "It has many eyes, but cannot see. What is it?" Watch asked. The riddle would be fairly easy for a human, but for a pidge to answer it would be something else. Watch had heard the riddle a long time ago, from some pidge or another who had managed to translate the human joke after many long hours of work. Now it was Watch's turn to tell it. Watch flew down below Letter once again.

Watch thought about this one for a long time. It had many eyes but could not see. It fustrated her slightly, she really couldn't figure it out. "Many eyes..." She said slowly thinking it over. "I can honestly say I dunno really." She concluded after quite a while of thinking. "But an eye can be used when people mean hole sometimes right?" She asked curious.

Watch caught his breath, glad that he had managed to stump Letter. "Yes..." he said slyly. "Humans say that holes are eyes, sometimes..." Watch wasn't going to drop a free hint that easily. "Do you give up?" Watch wasn't sure when the last time was when he had had so much fun. He swooped around Letter, grinning in beak and gleaming in eyes. Riddles were fun!
