Karite noticed Kore walking along the forest floor. Upside down the little guy looked pretty cute. Until he suddenly jumped to the side and disappeared looking ahead Karite could tell perfectly why. Up ahead he saw two baby fawns. They didn’t look very old kind of wobbly the way the stood. He looked back and saw Kore creeping forward towards the babes readying for a strike. Looked like it was his time to come down as well. Pulling his upper body up towards the top of the stalk his weight had gotten too much snapping the stalk sending him hurtling to the ground. Rotating his body he managed to land on his feet. Although without his shoes to absorb some of the shock he got a good thump sent into his legs. The force was strong enough to send him some slight throbbing but other than that nothing he couldn’t handle but looking his fear was realized. The prey they had found had disappeared. “Damn it! I am never going to get this right.” Karite was beginning to get hungry, if he didn’t get something in his stomach soon he would be going to Podo begging. Standing he looked around to make sure Kore was gunning for him.

Kore knew what had happened as soon as the fawn ran and he heard the words spoken behind him by the boy. Not even acknowledging the irritation at how strong his skills were being mismatched with him. Kore simply climbed back into the brush and lied back down. Maybe he would leave and the cub could actually get some hunting down. His eyes quickly scanned the area his nose twitching as he breathed looking for a scent and his ears moved every few seconds looking for a sound. This was going to be the longest hunt ever if the boy kept messing up. Could he really be his partner?

Karite felt kind of bad that Kore was so good at this but no matter what happened he messed it up for the little cub. While he knew there wasn’t much he could do for his lack of skill he just hoped they caught something before class started or he had a feeling they would both be in for a painful day filled with hunger and crankiness. Looking around for a new place to hide he realized that taking to the trees was out of the question. Now he had no choice but to wait on the ground like Kore. Walking over to the cub he sat down on his bum with a kunai firmly gripped in his hand. He had never hunted before but twice he had prey and twice he let it go. This was no game for sure. Kore seemed like he did this for substance. It must be hard for him to be so young yet to fight for everything you get.

Karite couldn’t keep still long enough to wait he was so upset with himself all he could do was mumble and squeeze the kunai in his hand. One thing he hated more than Tanu was failing at something. He worked so hard for everything. He worked twice as hard in school and by himself. It always upset him when someone out shined him with half the work. Tanu and Shisei even Kei and Shin. No matter what he did someone always out did him. What was the point if he was always at the bottom of the barrel? Speaking of Shin and Shisei he hadn’t been at his room last night which probably made Shin worry a little if at all. He hoped he could explain in class. As for Shisei he would tell him of his plan and have him help spread the word to the kids in the classes.

The next route in the serpent boy’s path was a thick forest of bamboo. Each stalk of the hard wood rose into the sky. Long like the necks from the tallest giraffes. Some as thin as the stick of a broom. Others thick as the boy’s body. Shisei stopped for a minute to gaze at the spectacle. There was a serene feeling to this place. It was a rare sight for his pupils to gaze upon and the serpent youth was contemplating staying for a while. It could be a nice place to reflect upon. The only noise that could be heard was the noise of the small creatures that lay within the bamboo thicket. The nose of the youth twitched slightly and he let out a small sneeze. Once again Shisei was sure he did not attain any cold. His mind just regarded the sneeze as from something in the air around the bamboo thicket. A mental note was made to return here some day and do some training. His feet then continued on to jog, leaving the area.

Karite looked around and thought he heard a sneeze come from the entrance to the forest. It was more than likely his imagination getting the best of him. Turning back and looking at the cub he noted now it was time to get serious. Getting up on his toes he put his hands to the ground and peered through the bushes to his surprise the most beautiful thing poured into his vision, Rabbits. The one thing he hoped to see before they went to class was prey he had seen lots of it. The one thing he wanted t do before they went to class was catch the prey and find that Podo guy to help him cook it. Looked like things were looking up for him today, he just hoped he found Tanu in time to tell her of his challenge.

Kore noticed the rabbits were back quickly. He hoped this time the boy did not mess things up for him like he had done the countless of times before this. It would be rather embarrassing if Kore messed up this time. Slowing his breathing done almost to nothing he began to step forward his body hugging the ground with every low step. As he did he constantly checked every angle to make sure no one was on look out and he had a clear shot. This was the most perfect shot all day. As long as Karite followed him to the letter he would have something soon in his belly. It was bad seeing a angry lion. Try seeing one who hadn’t been feed. Then you might have a problem.

Karite gripped the Kunai in his hand making sure it was still there. As Kore moved forward Karite took a second to remember the mistakes he made on the past attempts and made them a note for this one. As he stepped forward he looked at the ground making sure nothing was in front of him that would make a sound. As he crept closer he looked around expecting something to jump out so he would not be as frightened if something did happen. He was almost there. His path was clear and all would be good as soon as he pounced on his prey for the first time. The thrill of the hunt would over flow and fill his body.

Kore was in range for a pounce and if Karite did not move quickly his would get away. Kore however would not let him scare off another catch so soon. As the rabbit grew bigger in Kore’s eyes he knew it was the time to strike. Jumping in the air he let out a small growl. The Rabbit not even looking back to figure out what it was tried to jump, but it was too late. It had fallen into the grip of Kore’s teeth. Sinking in the taste of blood filled his lips. The taste he had almost forgotten and its warm sensation. The rabbit whined as it tried to move but was going nowhere. It was as good as dead and Kore was as good as feed.

Karite knew he couldn’t keep up with Kore or the rabbits. So he would have to rely on the only thing he had in his arsenal fast enough to hit one, his Kunai. Watching Kore out of the Corner of his eye he waited to the cub was mid-air before launching the steel blade. Listening to the whistle he noticed as Kore landed on the rabbit his Kunai pierced the other right through the stomach. Running forward quickly to make sure it didn’t escape he held it by the sides ripping out the Kunai. He looked at it feeling a little remorse. He knew it was what people had to do to survive sometimes was to kill others, but he had never killed a thing in his life. He always wanted to be a protector, but in order to do that did that mean he had to become a killer?

Kore put down a paw on the creature and looked up at Karite. He was very surprised to see the boy actually managed to pull it off. Yet for some reason the boy seemed to be troubled. He looked like he was about to crumble from the shear fact of the blood running into his hands. While looking at the boy he noticed the creature under his paw was no longer there. It was trying to scamper off and at a very good pace for just being ripped open on its spine. Looking at the boy again he growled in his throat a little trying to wake the boy up from whatever fantasy world he had slipped into. Turning back to his prey he focused on the scent of its blood and the tiny white and red blob that ran in front of him. Beginning to walk towards it he would not let this thing escape him.

Karite looked at the rabbit and felt sorry for the little thing, but knowing the circle of life was about surviving he knew it was only a matter of time before something else got to it. Hearing Kore growl knocked him out of his thoughts and made him drop the rabbit, which almost instantly shoot off into the woods leaving an easily followed trail of blood. Kore had startled him, but now he had to chase down the injured rabbit and put it out of its misery. The more of the blood that got onto his hands the more he would feel like he did something wrong. Something about killing for no reason seemed so wrong. This however was for substance yet it still felt so wrong. What would happen to him when he did have to kill for the first time? Would Tanu be the first, or would he be able to tame the beast in her and become her friend? So many question sprouting from one single rabbit, Karite had to clear his head if he was going to concentrate.

Kore waited a little longer letting his muscles build up tension before he was off like a bullet. Every stride took him off the ground as for a split second he hovered over the ground like a humming bird in flight. He was moving with speed and grace just like he was accustomed to with such a small body. As the rabbit turned around a stalk of bamboo Kore corrected his angle in mid jump and cut the corner sharp cutting the distance in half between them. Coming closer Kore pulled up beside the rabbit and gripped in tumbling head over tail before stopping with the rabbit in his mouth. Breathing heavily he managed to regain his composure before finishing the deathly task of snapping this things neck.

Kore dropped the rabbit this time quickly setting a paw on it so it couldn’t move. Looking at it the once beautiful white fur was messy and red with blood. Its once fearless eyes were darkened with shock and fear. Not taking note of the now taxing features Kore wrapped his teeth around the rabbit’s neck and shook it from side to side quickly waiting for the snap. As he felt it and heard he dropped the creature looking at its now limp body. It had taken longer than he had hoped but the deed had been done and he could eat happily tonight. If Karite did his part then so could Ruha.

Karite shook his head as his toes dug into the ground as he pushed off from the ground lucky for him his prey had more sufficient injuries then Kore’s. That and the fact Karite was a speedy little trickster. As he moved almost flawlessly though the bamboo dodging stalks that had fallen and jumping over low hanging branches. On the move Karite seemed at his best moving with ease. Although looking at Maya and Shuga it looked like he would soon have to sacrifice his speed for strength to even come close to matching them. As he came close to grabbing the prey a branch popped up out of nowhere. Skidding to his knees he slid under it still managing to scoop up the rabbit once again.
