I usually keep the default names, unless I find their character name extremely boring for some reason. FFVII I kept all the default names. FFVIII I was tempted to give Rinoa something degrading, such as mosquito sweatdrop but decided to let her keep her name and just avoid partying with her as much as possible.
For FFIX, when Garnet wanted to change her name into "Dagger", I thought that was just plain ugly. So I called her "Blade" instead. XD
FFTA didn't have a storyline that impressed me too much, and I thought Marche was an extremely dull name, so I made him "Ivahnne" and added a music note at the end of his name so that everytime someone called his name, they all had to sing. 3nodding
The drawback, though, is sometimes I get so immersed into the new names I give them that I try to talk to my friends about "Blade" and "Ivahnne" and they have no idea what I'm talking about. xp

When my boyfriend and I played FFII (I think it's the original 2... I dunno, I get confused cuz VI says it's 3 and stuff...), since it can be 2 player... You can both control and stuff... We named Rosa, Erin (After me), and (I can NEVER remember the main character's name!) Well, him, we named Biff, which is my bf's nickname. And we named the other girl (I keep trying to call her Relm for some reason... I guess she kinda looks like Relm) just Girl.
I forgot... In VII, I named Red XIII his REAL name... Nanaki. It was cool too, cuz I called him that BEFORE I knew his real name!

I keep mines as defaul but I name my Chocibos Dragonball and Yu Yu Hakusho characters!!! whee Can't resist!!!I name them the cool people only though.....OH WELL!!! whee whee whee

I change the main characters name to my own which happens to be Donny in most RPGs I play but I generally leave all the others at the defaults.

On my current file, I named them their original names. But my brother and I want to make a file together where they're all pet names, after pets we know. Our favorite characters (Cid and Yuffie) already have names after our cats, Gene (Cid) and Zowie (Yuffie). Then we'll probably take other pet names for the other characters.
He used to play with an old friend, and they'd name Cloud after my brother Ryan, Barret after his friend Arturo, and on one file they named Aeris after me, Taylor (kinda sad when she died sweatdrop ), but usually they name Tifa after me since we kinda look alike (except my boobs aren't so big eek ).
Then, my friend Megan made a file. She named Cloud: Billy-Bob, Barret: HomieGDog, Tifa: Megan (after herself), Aeris: Cassandra (after Mokubahv), Red XIII: Bender (after her cat), and then Yuffie after me. But she hasn't got Cid, Vincent or Cait sith yet, and she only knows she's going to name Cait Sith after her cat, Andy.

My sister renamed Cloud "DUDE" so when he jumps into the train after sabotaging the first reactor, everybody yells "DUDE!!"
She renamed Barret "Mr. T" and renamed Tifa "Jiggles". She hasn't gotten that far in the game yet, but I'll update this post as soon a she runs into the other recruitable characters.
One guy told me that he named Tifa "you, Reno". When he reached Gonaga Swamp and Reno asks Rude who he likes amongst the party, it sounded like he was coming out of the closet! xd

We had this one log once, where the characters names where from DBZ. Cloud was SS Goku while cid was Vageta! xd

Barret: Fugly Man
Tifa: Butter rolleyes
Aeris: Sour Cream
Red XIII: 100% Gas. :shrug:
Cait Sith: Spy (made since to me.)
Vincent: Goth (got pissed at that one)
Cid: Potty Mouth (?????)
Yuffie: Butthead (??????)
She was eating a baked potato when she named Aeris and Tifa. confused
