Tom amusedly watched Tonks glance at the bulletin and scamper towards a rather good-looking guy in her house.

Tom was not stupid, nor was he all-knowing or good at divination or legilimens. In fact, it was just plain obvious what she was going to do...

but she didn't.

Tom shook his head. He watched the color rise to her cheeks...

Mortification: 1

Tonks: 0
,

Tom thought, turning back to his toast. Maybe next time she'll get it...

Tonks had excused herself from the table. Achlys watched her walk clumsily to the front of the hall to check the bulletin. Then she stalked off to the Hufflepuffs' table.

Achlys didn't see what Tonks did after that because Achlys's head snapped back to the bulletin board.

"Mabe the Hogsmeade dates are up," she said, not talking to anyone in particular. She muttered a good-bye to Tom and stalked to the bulletin. She was right. The next Hogsmeade trip was this weekend.

She skipped off to the Ravenclaw table. She couldn't wait to buy a pig-me-puff. As she was skipping, she saw Tonks walking hurridly, with bright pink cheeks. Achlys shrugged and sat down.

((Pygmy Puffs don't exist yet. Fred and George bred the first ones in 1996. Just a reminder.))

Tonks was going to go back to Gryffindor Table to speak to Tom. She would roll her eyes and laugh casually about the whole thing. It's because you're a freak, her thoughts reminded her, as they had earlier. Instead of stopping at Gryffindor, she made a hard right and went outside to sit on the front steps to the castle, where a snogging couple saw her and warily got up to go somewhere else. She thought she heard one of them utter the words "Dark Creature," but forced herself to think of happier things. "Expecto Patronum." A flock of silver mockingbirds made their way out of her wand and fluttered to perch beside her, making her smile. She always had been good with Defensive spells.

I should go and talk to her...

NO! Why do you let yourself be suckered in to being all sensitive and shite? What's wrong with you! You'll never get a girl by being nothing but their friend!

You'll never get a girl by just sitting and scarfing your face while they leave the Great Hall, alone, either.

Are you implying that Tonks would be the type of girl I'd want to go after?

Not necessarily. But it would do your conscience well to go and talk to her... see what happens?

NO! I need to stop worrying about girls. What do I need a snogging partner for, anyway?

Didn't say you needed a snogging partner. Just suggested that you should go see if she's okay.

Tom sighed. His internal struggle tapered off, and he was (once again) playing the part of majestic knight on a white horse - never to get the upper hand in games of affection.

He didn't necessarily like-like Tonks - he had just met her! - but the whole 'seeing if she's okay thing' only threw into sharp relief his past weaknesses.

Tom took a swig of pumpkin juice and strode leggily out of the hall, much to 3/4 of the Hogwarts' girls dismay. He shook his head.

I cause attention to myself, just WALKING, he thought as he approached Tonks a few minutes later.

Without saying anything, he leaned up against the stone wall, stroking one of the moonlight-colored mockingbirds.

Tonks hadn't heard Cepheus coming up behind her; one of her mockingbirds had started fluttering around, jerking its little beak to her right. She moved her head only slightly in that direction, and one of Tom's shiny buttons caught her eye. She smiled slightly again, seeing that one of her birds had taken a liking to him. She sighed, the smiled falling off her face. She had to ask before it killed her.

"Tom, am I a disgusting, treacherous, ugly, dirty-blooded shape-shifting-dark-creature-slash-circus-freak?" she asked, turning to face him out of nowhere. "And please, feel free to be brutally honest."

"Umm," Tom started, taken aback. There was no beating around the bush with this girl. He smiled to reassure her. "Tonks... for last half hour that I've known you, you've been naught but charming. I've seen nothing dark or slithery or disgusting about you. Please don't lose your die-hard self-esteem; you'd be utterly boring without it."

He grinned. It was the truth: the thing that made her most interesting was not her animorphagus powers, it was her charisma.

Without further ado, Tonks slid across the step and leaned against Tom's leg. It seemed a good enough spot, and she expressed her gratitude in more [appropriately] physical ways. "Thanks Tom." She bit her lip again, this time in concentration, and started toying with her hair, the bits that went through her fingers turning hot pink as if in reaction to heat.

"You're welcome," he replied, embarrassed.

Tom quite enjoyed expressing emotion without words. If only everyone were as physically affectionate. To him, a hug was more important than a sorry. A smile more important than a compliment.

He avoided the touchy-feely with his guy friends, mostly because they'd think him more gay than they already did, but also because girls were more likely to respond in a positive way.

Tom looked, amusedly, at the girl on his leg and her locks of neon. He smiled.

Tonks tilted her head back so that she was looking up at Tom's face. "So...what's the weather like up there my foot itches," she changed topics absently before reaching down to scratch her foot. A gust of wind came by that was so strong Tonks nearly lost balance. She could see Tom's poofy shirt flapping in the breeze, and felt immensely glad to be in his company. "Why don't you join me down here? The wind's killer today." She patted a space of stone step beside her.

Tom did as she suggested, plopping down right where he was standing. "That it is," he said absentmindedly, lost in thought. Although, what he was thinking about was a mystery to him because his mind was miraculously empty. "So... how's it going?" Tom asked lamely.

Tonks smiled broadly. "It's going fine. How's it going for you?" she countered.

"Alright," Tom sighed, remembering his former troubles. "Not good or bad I suppose. It's all so boring for me in this juncture of my life."

He flicked a lock of his hair, absentmindedly hoping that that might interest him. It didn't.

"Nothing exciting goes on here, does it?" she asked shrewdly, blowing bits of hair out of her face. She sighed quietly, thinking about the Hogsmeade trip in two days. It was awfully lonely going out there alone, but asking Tom to go with her would sound like she was asking him for a date. Wait, was she asking him for a date? No, no, of course not. It was a friend-date. Purely platonic at all times. "So, which of the numerous lovely young ladies that grovel at your feet every day are you asking to Hogsmeade this weekend? Surely a stud like you can get anyone you want." Boss, she actually sounded nonchalant!

Tom sighed. Was it that obvious that he was having emotional/girl troubles? Why would she bring it up like that? Unless she was having similiar troubles...

"Ah, none. If only, If only. Might make me feel better if you and I went... as friends, of course."

Tonks made sure she was looking down so that Tom couldn't see the happy smile on her face. "I would love to go as friends Tom. Hogsmeade's lonely when you don't have someone around to make you laugh at something no one else finds funny." She looked up and positively beamed at him, her hair turning a sunny yellow, and then fade to cornsilk blonde. Even though she was short and clumsy, she knew the hair made her resemble a veela a little bit when it was longer than today's style.
