This isn't Canon of course, but my friends & I used to have a lot of fun with the idea that as the Doctor is an alien & didn't grow up eating our foods, he might have a completely different idea about what was good cooking than us. In our fanfics he'd completely gross out his human companions with burnt or badly underdone food that he'd quite happily devour. I had a companion complain once that he was the only person she'd ever seen who could not only make gooey bread but crisp, burnt gravy to go with it. sweatdrop
One of my friends did a novel-length fanfic in which #6 & Peri spend a few weeks hanging out in New York City as tourists before the plot took off (the tourist part was not covered in detail). Apparently turning the Doctor loose in such a culturally diverse city for an extended time period wasn't the best idea, as he proceeded to sample all the cuisine, delighted by all the flavors. As many have suggested here, eating was fun for him & New York is loaded with good food! He'd allowed Peri to talk him into going incognito during this time & was wearing (relatively) normal clothing, but when the plot picked up he tried to get back into his regular clothes...and discovered to his outrage he had gained a lot of weight! lol

i was reading a doctor who novel, and it was talking about how rose thought the doctor never really went to bed, he just napped sometimes, i think its probably the same for him eating.

i'm sure he only needs naps because he runs on adrenaline from escaping all these threats that happen to turn up wherever he goes. lol! XD
oh yes! i just remembered, he goes to that party and gets 'drunk' in Girl in the Fireplace. i think he would have probably eaten something though we never see him doing it. he invented the banana split then biggrin
edit: i just realised that 'runs' was a pun...>.< he RUNS when he's on adrenaline and he runs ON adrenaline. that was such a bad pun...

Hmm, well I think he barely eats and barely sleeps, because he just doesn't need to. I mean, he probably could eat a whole lot more and sleep a lot more, but I guess there just isn't the need.
But you also have to take into account that they can't really show actors eating much or sleeping much and all that because... well less time for the action, and a bit boring unless it's incorperated into the plot somehow. I mean, they never show ANY of the actors going to the toilet or anything... omg... eek THEY'RE GOING TO EXPLODE *runs*

As the Tenth Doctor told Donna, being human is 'optional' for him, which perhaps we might in part understand as meaning certain human functions are optional. We know he's got a respiratory bypass system for when he feels like opting out of breathing. Why shouldn't he also be able to over-ride other vital functions with a 'nutrition bypass system' or a 'circadian rhythm bypass system'?
Of course, the thing is with eating that "it's sensual and fun" as Christina Aguilera once said, so if someone had the option of eating or not, why on earth would they go for Option Not? Certainly the Sixth Doctor excericised his power to lunch, or otherwise Mel wouldn't have had to nag him about his diet.
The Sixth Doctor's diet is worth thinking about actually, as he's one of the few people to have put on lots of weight after becoming a vegetarian. A lot of cheese, do you think?

Cheese isn't vegan, it's made from milk.
Do you think Time Lords have a slow metabolism? They do have a low body temperature. That would explain #6 gaining weight no matter what he ate. Mel needs to get that fact drummed into her head, if so! It would make weight loss next to impossible with diets & such.
