"Hmmm, yes. Wouldn't want you getting lost. The tunnels can be quite dangerous if you don't know where your going." The Kalona's ears perked forward at her excited giggle. It was almost nauseating, but he would endure.
He'd endure whatever he could until then.
The winds got stronger as the went higher. He shielded her from most of the nipping wind as he walked on the outer edge of the path. Which now was nothing more than a sheer drop. If she tried to run now, it would be very difficult. Seeing as just the two of them took up most of the walking space.
But just up a head, the ground leveled out a bit. And a cave opening was now coming into view. Valarauco never entered and left the same cave twice. Each one he had found connected to an elaborate system of tunnels. Something carved into the mountain long ago. Weither it had been by his own ancestors, the molten rock that slept in the belly of the massive mountain or by humans. Either way, they served him a good purpose.

She looked over the edge of their path and shuddered a bit. It was so high up! If she were to fall, there was no question of survival. She'd be gone for good. She moved closer to the stallion, trying to stay as far away from that ledge as she could.
As they turned yet another corner, she finally saw the opening of a cave. It was dark inside, and she could see nothing past the entrance. The light from outside the cave provided only a little illumination in the deep caves within.
She turned her head to look up at him again, smiling softly.
"Is that where we're going?"

He nodded as he picked up his pace. The warmth of the caves calling to him ever stronger. "Yes. It is a lot warmer in there and less of a chance of falling over the cliff."
Valarauco wasn't afraid of falling. No, not at all. He had his wings. But if she fell, well, at least it would be a quick death. And a quick meal. There was no way he'd be able to save her. Sure he could pick up a foal or two with his jaws, but not a full grown mare! Even trying would surely bring about his own end.
Reaching the entrance now, the subtle glow of the mountain's belly illuminated furthur down the tunnel. A small blast of warm air shot up and out before dieing down once more. The warmth was a welcome feeling to his body. And not long he slipped inside the cave. Stopping a few feet short of the entrance to wait for her.

Her mane was blown by the blast of warm air as they entered. She stopped for a moment, enjoying the warmth that came from the cave. It was so nice after the blistering cold outside. She shook her body, tossing off the melted remnants of snow that still stuck to her, her ankles jingling again.
She looked towards the stallion again and showed the tiniest shadow of a smile. She moved towards him, her eyes half-open, staring at him. She sidled right up to his side and nipped his neck the slightest bit.
"Thank you. Now where do we go from here?"

Valarauco narrowed his eyes at the n** to his neck for a second. But casually brushed it off. His first reaction would of been to bite, but he needed to control that. It had gone too far now and if he messed up..well. That would be the end of it.
She'd probably run. Maybe fall off the cliff and to her death. Then he'd hafta drag her lifeless body back up here.
That didn't sound fun.
Moving past her, he cave soon opened up into a tunnel that seemed to go on forever. "Farther in of course. Its a lot warmer and there are better things deeper inside the mountain."

She followed silently for a while, letting her eyes adjust to the dimmer light. The reflective property of the snow outside had made it seem a lot brighter and her eyes weren't used to the dim glow of the mountain.
She stayed slightly behind him, not right next to him like she was before. She looked around as they continued deeper into the cave. She had never been in one before, and it was actually quite interesting. It wasn't as....slimy as she would have expected.

The stallion glanced behind him to make sure she was still following. After checking he veered off to the left into a connecting tunnel.
This tunnel opened up a bit wider. The firey glow of the mountain from the previous pathway abruptly ended. And now, a light, greenish glow now took its place in the tunnel ahead.
Moss. Glowing moss that had adapted to the darkness of these tunnels grew in small patches. And as he moved furthur a long, the glowing moss grew thicker. Large patches covering entire faces of rock. Valarauco had grown used to this subtle ambiance that it cast among the shadows.

As the stallion turned to the left, she followed, and was met by one of the most amazing sights she had ever seen. Her dark eyes glowed with the green light that was coming from the walls of the cave. She just had to stop and get a better look at this stuff.
She veered off the main path, getting closer to the wall, bringing her face right up to the glowing surface. It was amazing! She had never seen anything like this. It glowed like the sun or the moon, but it was the strangest shade of green, and it looked almost plant-like. She turned to the stallion, her eyes full of amazement.
"What is this?"

He stopped. Turning his head slowly. Eyes landing upon the glowing moss with little interest. It was amusing how fascinated some Soquili were with rare sights such as the glowing moss. The majority who had never explored the mountains never even knew it existed.
An ear twitched as he shot a glance at Ju. The tip of his spaded tail swishing back and forth as if to cut the air. "Its moss...." He replied a bit flatly. "Because it grows in the darkness it has accumulated a green glow. I'm not sure why, but its good for lighting the way in the darkness either way."

She smiled. So it was a plant. But she had never seen a plant like the before. But then again, she had never explored a cave before, either. She turned away from the wall and looked farther down the tunnel they were in. Indeed, the green glow seemed to continue down that way. She smiled, and returned back to the middle of the path, ready to follow him again.
She wondered what other surprises she would find in the cave.

Now that she was done futzing about this bit of scenery, Valarauco continued down along the path. The green moss still lighting the way. He was silent for the most part. Keeping a keen ear open and his nose sniffed silently at the air.
They were being followed. For a while now. But he made no mention of it to the female. He had other things to deal with besides a frantic mare.

She continued along with him, still taking in the amazing green glowing moss. She really liked it in here so far. It was not at all like she had always thought a cave would be like. Not full of creepy, crawly bugs and slimy, scaly creatures. Yes, she was glad that she had decided to come here with this stallion. It was actually quite nice.
She continued silently, and thought she heard something moving behind her. She stopped for a moment, but couldn't hear anything else, so she continued in the wake of the fiery stallion.

It was close. Too close.
In a flurry of dark and fire, he whirled around. His spaded tail swinging outward and slamming a dark mass into the illuminated wall. Wings flared in the little space of the pathway as much as they could as he maneuvered his massive body. Razor sharp teeth bared as his eyes burned.
"Mine." Valarauco's voice was low and threatening. Yellow eyes peered back at him with rage and surprise. Sharp claws lashed out but made barely a scratch against his tough skin. His hoof came forward and pressed hard against the creature's throat. The sound of snapping bones and a faint gurgling noise was all that was heard next.

It happened so fast that she had no idea what had happened. She pressed herself against the wall, her eyes wide as the stallion threw something against the opposite wall. She tried to make herself look as small as possible, shrinking close to the wall and crouching down low to the ground.
What he said was small and might have sounded insignificant in any other situation, but the tone of his voice sent a paralyzing chill down her spine. He was obviously very protective of something, and she had a very bad feeling that it was her. If he had said it in any other way, it wouldn't have been so scary, but there was a hunger in his voice that made her stomach churn. As she heard the sickening crushing of bones as the stallion killed whatever creature it was, she gasped and took a few steps backwards. His eyes were burning, and she felt a sudden terror race across her body. She stood up and turned around, trying to be as quiet as possible. She had made a huge mistake.

He caught her sudden, slow movements out of the corner of his eye as she started to back away. A slight grin spreading across his maw as his head twisted around and then his body. "Something wrong, dear? You aren't leaving are you?"
Flicking his slender tail slightly, the Kalona took a few steps towards the mare. Ears perked forward as he loomed through the darkness. Eyes locked on her as the smell of sweat and blood filled his nose.
Ah, seemed the game might of been up. Oh well.
