Being fast just makes it so people who don't play the guitar think that you're good. People like Herman Li and Malmsteen are fast, but as far as technique and originality go neither are all that great.

Woah, calm down there sir. Malmsteen pretty much revolutionized the Neo-classical style. He is actually a very good guitarist, and incorporates alot of scales and feeling into his "arpegiated" shed fits. Herman Li... I could take it or leave it. But Malmsteen is a guitar legend like it or not.
Don't get me wrong; he's a great guitarist and an awesome songwriter. And he's definitely influential. But in my personal opinion climbing up and down scales and throwing in the occasional pitch harmonic does not make you revolutionary nor the deity that people make him out to be.
Oh of coarse. I didn't mean that he was some kind of god either. But you were making it sound as if he were some third rate player though. I guess it was just a simple misunderstanding.
