Name: Loraine Ortega
Description: Loraine Ortega is utterly adorable when first looking her square in the face. That smile that seems to be ever present surely brings a smile to most adults faces. The smile holds an all-knowing-ness that is really quite rare and quite ridiculous for a girl who merely looks around nine years old. The child, however, is has more knowledge than a nine year old should have.
But then, we’re forgetting the rare and incurable (most likely genetic) disease she has; one where her body ages so slowly it takes approximately ten years for it to age, however her mind is quite a different story.
Loraine has natural blonde hair that reaches a few inches above her shoulder blades. She usually leaves it down, or pulls it back though that seemingly depends on what she decides to wear. The child, if that’s what you’d like to call her, has a great fashion sense and the ability to get whatever she wants if she just opens her mouth. However, Loraine has always been a quiet person, in foster care she rarely spoke unless spoken to (and even then not always).
In some ways, Loraine is depressed on how she’s treated simply because she looks so young. But she’s also learned that she can use the age she appears to be to her advantage. If a few gentle tears fall from her green eyes she can pretty much get anyone to cave her way. She just has the appearance, the adorable-ness, the voice, and the power to get what she wants, when she wants. Which, does in essence make her more spoiled as a child, but given her background she feels she deserves to trick people into giving her what she wants.
The child, Loraine, stands at only four foot four inches but even her height can come to her advantage. The fact that she’s as skinny as a small tree also helps even though she’s not all fond of the way she looks in that respect. In fact, she has the appetite of an elephant so she has no idea why she’s as skinny as she is. She supposes her metabolism is as fast as a jack-rabbit in regards to her aging disease, otherwise its so slow it doesn’t even process the amount of calories she eats.
Personality: Loraine is to put simply an intelligent girl who prides in learning as much as she possibly can while she can. If there’s a library in town she’ll definitely be found in it and reading about every book on the shelves. She’s been known to buy and/or steal books from shops just because she hasn’t read them yet. This includes both fiction and non-fiction books on everything from how to build your own house to how to identify plants to dangerous and deadly snakes in America to learning foreign languages. Since she looks so young she can only do so much, but she tends to use her ability to get what she wants, which usually consists of a book of some kind.
In this aspect Loraine can come off as a very shy, secluded child who just wants to bury her nose beneath a book. However, she tends to be quite the opposite, she likes socializing with people older than her, however, most don’t want to socialize with a person who looks to be merely nine years old. In this aspect, she does happen to be more quieter than she would normally be.
Despite this, Loraine always seems to have a smile on her face, and will take everything that comes at her in stride. She’s still human, and despite her age and how she appears she does not have any healing powers so she still must be careful. But, she’s also learned of old Indian, tribal remedies she can use to heal wounds quicker than the common first aid kit, though she does know how to use that as well, and is equipped with the knowledge and experience to use CPR, if she has enough strength to do so.
History: Loraine was born on a chilly, gloomy Monday morning at three forty-seven. Her biological mother Reese Woods was roughly the age of seventeen and no more equipped to take care of a child than any other teenager from a rural family background. The baby born was healthy besides one ‘small’ factor, the child, Loraine, possessed a rare disease that caused her body to age slowly like the speed of a snail. In this aspect, the child age so slowly that it took her a decade (or so) to look a year older. Because of this, Reese Woods found it utterly impossible to care for the child and sent her into foster care where a suitable family could take care of her.
Roughly, with this rare disease Loraine started out life relatively hard. She aged slowly, though her mind and brain power was well-more educated than others her age. She was able to use more of her brain and learn from her experiences which in turn got her through school, and made school relatively easy for her when she was old enough (look-wise) to attend it. Because of her mere size and the age she looked it was thoroughly discussed that she would have to be home-schooled, otherwise she’d have to take every grade roughly ten times, which is unfair for any child.
Loraine didn’t mind learning, in fact she loved to learn new things. The foster family that took her in was kind enough to by her multitudes of books to read. She also was often taken to the public library, and checked out books. It wasn’t long before she’d read all the books in the library and was borrowing books from neighboring families, and other shops when the family went on long trips or vacations.
There was always the confliction of what exactly she was allowed to read or allowed to watch as she appeared to be only roughly the age of a child, but was in fact much older. Because of her disease she had to transfer from one foster family to another multiple times, and thus those that learned of her history tried to put new restrictions on her. For merely seven, she had quite a developed brain, a colorful vocabulary, and the rebellion usually accompanied with the teenage variety of children. But Loraine had gotten tossed around so often, and restricted so much, that she wanted some freedom.
It was around this time that her ability flared up…
She started realizing that when she got angry or really wanted something she could convince her foster family, siblings and even the dog to do as she asked. This even happened when she knew that the answer would be no. She got to thinking that this, for one, could be used to her advantage and secondly that it wasn’t a natural ability. She’d reviewed tons of books on history as well as dappled her interests elsewhere and discovered that she was unique. It wasn’t until a few years later that the term ‘natural gift’ hit her ears, and she realized she was one of those. But by then she’d learned to adapt her ability enough that it was hardly noticeable that she was controlling people.
Loraine had always been a naturally quiet person, many people, when first meeting her, thought she was a mute. However, this is not true, she simply just doesn’t feel like speaking or socializing with others given her own age, disease, and dilemmas.
When she was nine her current foster family was killed who believe their child had an illegal transplant, and were trying to 'corrupt' her, as she put it. Her foster father had a wide collection of guns, and Loraine pulled them on the officers, killing the lot of them.
Skills: Intelligence beyond her years (the age she looks not is), she knows how to use a gun, blade, she can do CPR, first aid, good with shoplifting, stealing, pick pocketing, etc.
Augmentations/implants:
1- Natural Gift - Persuasion: Loraine has the unique ability to use her voice to entrance people to do as she pleases, however, this has many faults which will be explained in a moment. First off, however, is the fact that whenever Loraine speaks, her voice is used to persuade people into sliding her way. It’s as if she’s trying to persuade someone to do something for her and succeeding with flying colors. Like she’s great at debates and can get anyone to sway in her opinion.
This however, is something she can’t turn off. If she wanted to actually argue with someone she can’t, because they’d instantly want to cave her way. This has led her to be a very quiet person who is most often considered to be a ‘mute’ because of her lack of speech. That doesn’t mean, however, that she won’t speak just that she’s not fond of getting her way all of the time.
Also, Loraine’s ability effects certain ethnic groups less and some not all. For instance, Hispanics are effected less by her ability but can still be persuaded into swaying her way if she works at it. Cubans are more resistant to her ability and Asians can’t be persuaded at all. This comes as both an advantage and a disadvantage to her. For those times she wants to argue with someone she simply finds someone of that ethnic group, and when she really wants something but one of these ethnic groups is in her way she has to really put her knowledge to the test. But this as side effects on its on, sometimes she has to act the age she appears and she has to remember that as she’s trying to persuade someone to lean her way.
The people that surround her on a day-to-day basis are more likely to listen to her than random strangers.
Items/weapons:
1- Journal, equipped with a black pen.
2- Porcelien doll, named Elaine equipped with two pocket knifes in her dress. (if that counts for more than one item just tell me and I'll change it)
3- Dagger, hooked to the back of the inside of her prison attire.
Home World: Earth
Reason for Being on the Ship: Prisoner
Reason for Wanting the eye/what he/she would wish for: Unknown (for now), though most believe it would be to know everything there is to know about the universe, and the resources to find such information.
