It's kind of funny how few people ever really considered the possibility of Dumbledore being homosexual (at least not before the release of the last book, at any rate, and likely not many even then). I think it's because he's so elderly during the books - people have trouble imagining a hundred and fifty year old wizard as possessing a sexuality in the first place, let alone being gay and in love with a former friend turned dark wizard, no matter how... colorful and flamboyant he is.
When I first found the quote (on Accio Quote, I believe), and followed it back to an article just to be sure the first site wasn't just pulling my leg, I just started laughing. I mean... I thought there was something going on in book seven, but figured that even if I wasn't seeing things it'd just remain subtext.
Thank you, JKR! Whatever small complaints I may have with bits of the last two books, I'm glad to have had more character development of the ever-mysterious Headmaster, even if much of it had to be posthumous.

I love that she outed him, but I hate the backlash of people saying that she shouldnt release information about the characters after the series ended. I mean. who cares right? I figure that as long as it wasnt vital to the plot, who cares what little details she gives away. Shes had these characters in her head for who knows how long. Of course there are going to be some things that wouldnt have fit into the books.

When that news came out, my floor (I go to uni, so I live in a dorm) went abolutely NUTS! Our common room was just full of people talking about it.
Personally, I think it's great that she had a gay character in her books. But, I also think she could/should have mentioned it while the books were still coming out. A floormate made the comment that it was like the hype of Potter was over after the last book, and it was a way to get the name back in the headlines. Now, I don't really believe that, but I can understand why some would be suspicious. I know she released the detail for the sake of preserving the character in the upcoming movie, but does anyone have any thoughts on her timing for outing him?

The timing was suspicious. *nods* The hype was dying down and most people who didn't know about it weren't hearing about it that good anymore. But even so, it would have a 50/50 effect of putting people off it or drawing them to it. Doesn't really matter about whether the attention's good though, just so long as people hear about it and get the word out.
Either way I don't care. If it's from the author's mouth it's canon unless it conflicts with something already written.

Suprisingly I didn't have a screamy super hyper squee moment when I found out, I was just profoundly dispointed that it wasn't Sirius and Remus being outed... crying

I was rather disappointed with the lack of gay characters in Harry Potter. Finding out about Dumbledore made me whoop with delight.
Me? I don't really believe in sexuality. I think anyone can fall in love with anyone. Though, I am sure now that the gay community will be more inclined towards the books. I think it simply gets her more readers, which everyone is happier about, because it gives us more potential slashers. D:<
I'm just waiting until they tell me that Seamus and Dean were secretly lovers. Then I'll have a happy day. I'll frolic and stuff, which isn't natural for a Slytherin.

Now if only she would out Sirius/Remus....oh yeah it can't be long till she admits it. It's so ovious through out the books. Just like Harry/CEdric is ovious in the 4th movie.

I read somewhere that she intended for them to be a gay couple, but she changed it because of all the controversy it would cause. That's why the Remus/Tonks things was like 'Um... okay, that was random'.

If I've ever heard useless information about a character, it is certainly the fact that Dumbledore is gay. I mean, really... How does that have anything to do with the storyline? And of course she said it in Boston, no better place for that sort of thing.

And of course she said it in Boston, no better place for that sort of thing. Someone asked if Dumbledore had any past loves. She answered. Useless or not, someone asked, and she was just being a good author and answering.
