What about the stereotypes associated with dragons, and how we can either remove them or alter them?

When it comes to stereotypes, you first have to ask whether you're talking about western or eastern dragons. In period, they were associated with very different things. Eastern dragons were often guardians or gods in legend; in general good guys. While in western legends, dragons are almost always evil killers who horde gold and eat virgins...

Which reminds me...

Quote:
A dragon has come to our village today.
We've asked him to leave, but he won't go away.
Now he's talked to our king and they worked out a deal.
No homes will he burn and no crops will he steal.

Now there is but one catch, we dislike it a bunch.
Twice a year he invites him a virgin to lunch.
Well, we've no other choice, so the deal we'll respect.
But we can't help but wonder and pause to reflect.

Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Are they salty, or sweeter, more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot?
Do virgins taste better than those who are not?

Now we'd like to be shed you, and many have tried.
But no one can get through your thick scaly hide.
We hope that some day, some brave knight will come by.
'Cause we can't wait around 'til you're too fat to fly.

Now you have such good taste in your women for sure,
They always are pretty, they always are pure.
But your notion of dining, it makes us all flinch,
For your favorite entree is barbecued wench.

Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Are they salty, or sweeter, more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot?
Do virgins taste better than those who are not?

Now we've found a solution, it works out so neat,
If you insist on nothing but virgins to eat.
No more will our number ever grow small,
We'll simply make sure there's no virgins at all!

Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Are they salty, or sweeter, more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot?
Do virgins taste better than those who are not?

And there is the reply from a dragon...

Quote:
Now, I am a dragon.
Please listen to me
For I'm misunderstood to a dreadful degree.
This ecology needs me and I know my place,
But I'm fighting extinction with all of my race.

Well, I came to this village to better my health
Which is shockingly poor, despite all my wealth.
But I get no assistance and no sympathy,
Just impertinent questioning shouted at me.

Yessss, virgins taste better than those who are not.
But my favorite snack food with peril is fraught.
For my teeth will decay and my trim go to pot.
Yet virgins taste better than those who are not.

Now, we Worms are deep thinkers; at science we shine,
But our world's complicated with every new line.
We must quit all the things that we've done since the Flood
Like, lying on gold couches poisons our blood!

Well, I'm really quite good almost all through the year.
Vegetarian ways are now mine out of fear.
But a birthday needs sweets as I'm sure you'll agree.
And barbecued wench tastes like candy to me!

Yessss, virgins taste better than those who are not.
But my favorite snack food with peril is fraught.
For my teeth will decay and my trim go to pot.
Yet virgins taste better than those who are not.

As it happens our interests are almost the same.
For I'm really quite skillful at managing game.
If I ate just your men, would your excess decline?
Of course not, the rest would just make better time

But the number of babies a woman can bear
Has a limit, and that's why my pruning's done there.
Yet an orphan's a sad sight and so when I munch.
I'm careful to take out a virgin for lunch.

Yessss, virgins taste better than those who are not.
But my favorite snack food with peril is fraught.
For my teeth will decay and my trim go to pot.
Yet virgins taste better than those who are not.

In my writing, dragons don't horde gold, they don't kidnap virgins or princess, bounty hunters/knights will have tried to kill them in the past, but not to save some damsel in distress (it's more on the money). I recently wrote a short story based on one of the dragons in my world (although a second is included), and I've been more diverse than many probably would be. This story I pitched to the short story writing competition on the theme of dragons.

I've always thought "what would dragons DO with gold except horde it and lay on it?" So, when this dragon is asked to assist a country in its defence and is told that he will be paid as much gold as he wants, he asks what he's meant to do with it? And gives a suggestion of walking into a shop and buying a new outfit. I think of most dragons having a dry and sarcastic sense of humour, and that's what I've done here.

The Smaug-type dragon just doesn't work for me anymore. It did when I was a child, but that idea has been done to death and there's no originality left in it from what I can see.

Well, I think my avatar might add some kind of freshness to the concept of dragons. Just let me figure out how I'm going to do his origins and I'll post.

Ha-ha! Good one Berz! I liked the part about the dragon being too fat to fly. lol
And yer right. Eastern dragons have been seen very differently. The one in the movie "Mulan" was a heroic dragon, even though he was clumsy. rolleyes

A person's view of Dragons is based on what they were raised with and where. Depending on what they read in books or see in movies greatly influences the way people think of them. I mean, compare the dragons from Eragon to the Dragonlance dragons:

Ha-ha! Good one Mel! rofl

I just had a thought! What if some alchemist decided to make a half fairy, half dragon type of being? I don't think anything like that has been done yet, has it? neutral

WoW has them. And it's actually a pretty frequent subject of artwork.

It just doesn't seem right to me. It's a great painting but...dragons with fairy wings just feels wrong to me somehow. That is unless it's meant to be someone's warped idea of a "dragonfly".

Wow Berz, cool pic! And you say that's from World of Warcraft? Or am I getting my initials wrong?

I agree with Mel now that I've seen the concept taken to a new level. It just doesn't seem right. I think my idea sounded better on paper than it did on, well... you know. sweatdrop

Usually, I see them as tiny dragons with fairy wings. That picture is somewhat unusual as it is still a big dragon.
