Kalvin looked back at the chicks as well. He wondered if he would ever stand a chance at riding one of them when they were older. "I could help out, but I need a better job if I'm going to move out of the boarding house. Do you know anyone who might want to hire me? I can do most any job."

"I know someone you could ask." Laura nodded. "Rem might know who to see. Lords always know someone somwhere." Leaning back against the tree, she wondered just what Kalvin could do. Hell, maybe if she asked Kalvin could move in as staff to look after Leolin and Tali both. That would make her job easier... But no; if he were to stay, she'd have to tell the lad she was not actually a fellow.

"Oh, that's the guy who sponsors your racing right? He sounds interesting. I've never met a lord before," Kalvin added nervously. Even his best clothes might offend the high tastes of a lord.
Of course Rem would be a lot smarter than him too, so he would have to be patient and wait his turn to speak so as not to offend Lord Rem. He would have to use his best manners, bow and say please and thank you and act like a real gentleman. Just thinking about it made him nervous. His mother had taught him manners, but would they be good enough for a lord? Kalvin bit his lip, unaware that he was hugging his legs.

Laura watched Kalvin as he turned into a turtle drawing into his shell. "Oi, Kalvin?" She rested a hand on his shoulder, looking worried for him. "You all right?" The idea of Rem being at all intimidating hadn't crossed her mind. The man was nearly as tame as a kitten as long as one was at least semi-polite.
A wiggling little creature made her way over onto the toe of Kalvin's shoe. Bree wanted attention, and her brother had mastered walking much better than she had at this point. Giving soft little chirps up at the lad in anticipation of a warm pet or a gentle word.
