Aww phooey! You can take it however you want but not only did he see Aerith first but he saw her more. xD And I do think that the order matters.
This is how I see it:
woman he loves -> best friend -> family
heart

Like I said before I saw it as Cloud seeing the things he lost then what he still has. (I can't remember the exact order but it was Aeris first, Tifa and the kids last, right?) But yeah, the couple you ship is probably going to effect the way you interpret it. The only thing we can probably agree on is those were all things Cloud cherished.

Who he felt like he failed the most--> Wants to Live for--> Wants to protect.

I really didn't think much of the ORDER in which Cloud saw things. I didn't think that mattered, lol. This is that over-analyzing aspect that I was speaking of.... : ]
But about that dismantled quote, it's basically the same thing Cloud said in VII, anyways. With a few more bits of emotion. It's still sweet anyways, though I suppose! XD

To be honest? I don't think that there is a right answer. They did it the way they did so that the viewers would interpret to support the pairing they prefer. They don't want to upset viewers I suppose.

True....but some evidence does support Cloti or Cleris. Square will never say who the true couple is. Truth be told, both women are important to Cloud and that's the most obvious fact. Anything else besides that can be pretty much countered save a few moments that seem intimate. Who knows....maybe when the FFVII staff grow old they may finally give out the answer. xd
