"Alrighty, here ya go." Marshall said, handing Don the wetnaps as he came out from the back of the shop, the crotchety old man still cursing whoever old people hated. Mainly, Communist, The Red Menace, Those Darn Young Folks, and any thing that required batteries.
"Yeah, it is! I love the beach," Kale said, repeating himself, "Me and my daddy live on the beach! Its really cool!"

Tanner nodded at Kale again, "We got a pool in tha back yawd, but it isn't that big." Tanner said, probably the most he said at one time since he came into the shop.
"Thanks again." Don said with a smile graciously taking the sanitization wipes and beckoned Tanner back to the front of the counter. He didn't think it would be polite if he just invited himself behind the counter. "Come here Tanner, I gotta clean you up little guy." Don said holding up the wipes.
Tanner looked over at Don then back to Kale, "Ah gotta go now, thanks." He said before sticking his thumb in his mouth and getting off of the chair, Kale's drawing clutched in the other hand as he made his way back out to Don.
Don bent down to Tanner and dispensed a wipe and before to clean off the sticking ice cream gunk that was all over his face, arms, and belly, "Looks like ya got more on ya than in ya." Don said with a laugh, finding the cliche saying humorous.

"Heh heh, fear he's right little guy." Marshall agreed with a small laugh as Kale got down from his booster seat and bounced over to the three of them.
"Dad, whats a pool?" Kale asked curiously, not sure what it was or why Mr. Don and Tanner had one in their back yard.
"Huh? Um, well, a pool is a giant cement hole in the ground filled with water. Not every one lives on the ocean, so a lot of people have 'em."
"Ohhhh! Okay." Kale said, not really sure why any one would want a giant hole in their back yard. But it was filled with water, so he kind of understood.

It took a few more wipes to completely clean off Tanner but Don had managed it, he disposed of the sanitizing wipes in a nearby waste basket and gave Tanner's hair and affectionate ruffle.
Tanner's attention was still on the blue duck drawing that he held out in front of him.
"Well ya do have some pretty darn good ice cream here, don't suppose you happen to sell pints too?" Don asked remembering that tomorrow was grocery day anyhow and he might as well get some better ice cream here while he has the chance.

Huh. And this whole time I thought guys like you lived on Whey-Protein Shakes and like...Celery. the undeniably scrawny (and wee bit jealous) Marshall thought, "Pints? Cetaintly. If its not in the Freezer, just tell me the type you want." Marshall said, pointing to the standing freezer with a glass-door with cartons of ice cream in it.
"Dad? Can we hang this up? Pleeeaassseee?" Kale asked, holding up his prized picture he got from Tanner. It was really the first gift he ever got from some one not his dad, plus...The kid really liked Palm Trees.
"The second we get home, okay?" Marshall said, picking up his surprisingly short son and putting him on the counter, "My shift is over in...30 minutes. Can you wait that long?"
"...Thirty minutes?"
"The length of one of your shows."
"...Oooohhh! Okay!"

"Ya know what, could I just get a gallons worth of Sea Turtle Swirl? That should last us for a while. Thanks again." don said with a smile. He figured that Tanner would enjoy the treat for dessert over the next week. Tanner always finished his dinner, and was rarely if ever a picky eater, he was pretty much the prime example of a perfect little boy in Don's eyes.

"A gallons worth? Heh heh, alright. Just be one minute. Um, you mind watching Kale for me for a bit? I'm gonna have to go to the back of the store for it." Marshall said, ruffling the petite rodent boy's naturally messy hair.
Kale huffed, not sure why his dad wouldn't leave him unattended for such a short period of time. Oh, sure, last time Marshall did that Kale was found knee-deep in a gallon of Chocolate Vanilla Swirl but he could be trusted, honest!

"Sure, not a problem." Don said with a laugh. He looked over at Kale still on the counter. He was pretty small for a child, but he wasn't exactly a normal looking child either, maybe it was normal for him. "So your daddy bring you to his work a lot?" Don asked with a smile.
Tanner came over closer to the counter, closer to both Don and Kale. He was starting to get used to the ice cream shop, but shyness was still in his nature, he didn't like to be far away from those he knew.

Kale nodded, "Uh-huh. Dad takes me here a lot since he has to work. Usually we don't get a lot of people, though. I dunno why they won't come in." Kale said innocently, pointing to the door at the drooling (and oddly dressed) girls watching from the window.

Don glanced over to the window and saw the girls looking into the store and quirked his eyebrow confusedly. "Maybe they just don't have any money." Don said oblivious to the actual reason that they were all staring at him.

"Maybe!" Kale agreed as he climbed down off the counter, failing miserably as he landed less-than-gracefully on his butt with a dull 'thud'. Had Marshall seen this, he would've had the kid back on the counter making sure he didn't have any cuts or bruises and freaking out like the overly doting father he'd become.
"Hey, Tanner," Kale said, as if nothing had happened, "Do you wanna come over to my house to play some time?" Kale asked, looking up at the taller child.

"Kale! Are you alright? You really shouldn't do that, you could hurt yourself." Don said bending down to see if the boy was alright. Don was still a fairly young parent, but he did indeed have paternal instincts.
Tanner looked at Kale a little confused, he hadn't been asked to go to another childs house before, he tried to imagine what it would be like. After mulling it over he nodded at Kale, "That would be fun."

"What happened, what happened?!" Marshall said as he came running out from the back of the store, clearly in a panic from what Don said. "Is Kale hurt?! Is he okay?!!?"
"Hee hee, dad, your being silly." Kale giggled as he looked up at his stressed out father. His attention turned back to Tanner, "Really? Great!!" he said enthusiastically.

Don turned his attention to Marshall for a moment before looking back at Kale, "He looks fine to me, he just thought he didn't need help getting off the counter is all." He said with a small laugh.

Marshall let out a sigh, "Kale, how many times do I have to tell you not to do that?!" he said exasperated, this clearly not being the first time Kale had fallen off a table or counter. Kale looked up at his dad innocently. ...So...Damn cute... Marshall thought, REALLY wishing he remembered his Camera. "Oh, your ice-cream! Um, just one second!" Marshall said, disappearing then reappearing, carrying a large plastic tub that was apparently a bit of a struggle for the scrawny man. "Here ya go." he grunted as he put it on the counter.
