The sound of heavy footsteps echoed up from the stairwell, amplified by his audio augmentation. Stepping back into the shadows (and knowing how impossible it was to hide a nearly eight-foot-tall suit of mechanized armor), Gendou waited to see what would emerge atop the tower.

The youngest of the trio made a move to speak before her ears caught up with her. There was something moving in the hall. Her eyes widened and she nodded at Alliance. Kyraa followed her and Ruevian as far as she was allowed, and waited for them to return, or for something worse to greet her.

Alliance stopped at the top of the stairs, just before the doorway to the rooftop. She scanned the area she could see, but saw nothing. Then, off to the side, she saw a glint of metal. It was very faint, and she almost missed it, as it appeared to have been painted a matte black.

"Who's there?" she called.

Katane had not gone in for breakfast, choosing instead to stay on the roof, looking down into the lamplit streets. When she heard someone landing not too far away, she had assumed it was one of the clan.

But this smelled human.

She froze in her crouched position, emulating the stone she turned into during the day. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see a vague, dark shape.

Ruevian followed Alliance quickly, setting her coffee aside and scowling. Despite her obvious displeasure, she obeyed without question or comment. Once they reached the doorway, she held out a hand to stop Alliance, but was too late. She cringed as Alliance's voice ringed through the stairwell.

Perfect. Let them know we're here and put them on their guard.

She tensed, powerful muscles coiled as she prepared for the attack that surely must come.

Alliance's tail twitched as Ruevian made a motion to stop her, but it was too late.

Damnit! she thought. Yet another mistake that would cost her down the line.

She flashed an apologetic look at Ruevian before focusing back on the metallic whatever-it-was.

Gendou stared at the creature in the doorway leading down to the stairwell. The heat-signature proved that it was indeed alive, but the shape... the form...
The shadowy pictures that his surveillance equipment had taken had not lied: these were living statues, creatures of legend, complete with wings, claws, tails and armor.

He had ordered the battlesuit made to resemble them, as best he could based on the limited visuals he had available - but now he saw that the creature was shorter and more compact than the suit could ever be. It had a slightly different shape as well, confirming his suspicions that there was more than one of the creatures.

And it spoke English very clearly. Things were proving interesting already.

"Greetings," he called out, using the suit's external feeds to amplify his voice slightly.

The voice that spoke had a mechanical staticky buzz to it, like it was coming out of a radio or television.

Well, there's no point in pretending that we're not here, Alliance thought.

"What.....business do you have up here?" she called out, and then smacked her head. Smooth, Ally. Very smooth. Should have left this to Ruevian.

Regardless of ability, however, this was her mess. She had spoken first, and thus gave away her location. Hopefully whoever was out there hadn't noticed Rue; something she would most definitely use to her advantage in case this was trouble.

Alliance prepared herself for battle, on the chance that the being out there attacked. She unclasped her wingtalons in case she needed to become airborne, and flicked her tail a couple times to make sure it was limber.

Ruevian rolled her eyes and resisted the urge to snort. She silently gestured at Alliance, putting a talon to her lips, and quietly slipped her head out of the door. She almost enhanced her vision to see more, but such an action would make her eyes them glow fiercely red, so she stopped herself. Besides, she could see well enough.

She glanced back at Alliance, signaling that Alliance should keep the intruder talking while she hunted it down.

It was times like these that the female was grateful for her monochrome color scheme. It was rare she appreciated the dullness of her skin and hair, for as an artist, she had an appreciation for the rich tones of her kin. But now, as she moved through the shadows and behind some rubble, no naked eye could pick her out.

Unfortunately, she wasn't aware of heat vision.

There were two, possibly three now. The second had appeared as a faint glow on his infrared - but apparently the wings were also a cooling mechanism, and while wrapped around the body, muted their infrared signature. Gendou was fascinated by their physiology. If he could get one of them into his laboratories...

The third was moving stealthily through the shadows, almost invisible except on infrared. Gendou kept an eye on it, but focused his attention on the one framed in the doorway. It had spread its wings slightly, giving him a better look at the body and.. clothing. English-speaking, clothing-wearing monsters. Curiouser and curioser.

"I wish to speak with your leader," Gendou called out in response to the creature's inquiry.

C'mon, Rue, good girl, get behind him....

"Anything you have to say to the leader, you can say to me," Alliance said. Good, she thought. He most likely hasn't seen me yet, and even I've lost track of Rue.

She stayed mostly behind the doorjamb, but popped her head out to get a better look at her surprise visitor.

She froze at what she saw. How is that.......what is that?

A gigantic metal gargoyle, black and red, stared back at her. It stood roughly eight feet tall, its steel wings shining in the moonlight. The silver talons on its feet glinted menacingly at her, and the glowing red eyes seemed to stare directly through her.

"Who are you, and why have you come here?" she asked, after managing to find her voice. She thanked her ancestors that it came out strong and challenging - she certainly didn't feel that way.

Katane rotated her head slightly to see the shapmore clearly. She was confused; it didn't look or sound like a human at all! But there was no way she could mistake that scent. Unaware that it came from someone inside the metal, she figured it was just a machine of human make. But why would Alliance sound scared of a machine? She kept still and watched to see what it would do.

As Ruevian had opted to creep in the opposite direction -- to get around their visitor without being seen -- she had yet to see what he looked like, for based on the strange, tinny voice, it was male.

Now, though, as she neared to the quarry, her eyes widened. From behind, the massive metal wings spread out like a statement of power. It was a statement she had no wish to challenge, but there she was. She crouched on to all fours, nearing ever closer, looking more animalistic in the pose than she did while she was stone.

The voice was challenging now, and from the tone of it, feminine - if such things could apply to these creatures. He really needed to get one into the lab. Did they have defined sexes? If so, did they mate for life? Did they lay eggs or have live birth? So many questions... and the answers were here, if only he could gain their trust.

Gendou smirked behind his armor faceplate. The challenge in the voice was unwarranted. He doubted that the Church was aware of the presence of the creatures. And if they were, he doubted they would allow them to remain for long. For trespassers to treat him as a trespasser was, at best, amusing.

But he hid his amusement well - years of negotiating with heads of business and state had given him that talent. "My name is Gendou, and I have come to meet your..." he paused here, suddenly uncertain of what to say. There was more than one, but the group was likely small - fewer than twenty individuals total, if he had to guess. And how was their group structured? Clearly they had a leader - the one in the doorway had said as much. But beyond that, he knew nothing. "...your tribe," he finally finished, hoping the term was not insulting.

This visitor knew more than Alliance thought he would - or at least appeared to. He certainly had to think a bit before choosing how to end that last sentence.

Best to turn the conversation towards him, she thought, instead of revealing more about us.

She prayed Ruevian was in a good position to counterattack if the situation got ugly.

"Why?" she asked the stranger.
