The other's little speech went, for the most part, unheard. The British boy had stopped listening part way. It really seemed very strange. Personal achievement? Being forced in? Even as time passed, his mind could not grasp these ideas. Instead of truly listening, he watched the other's expressions intently, trying to understand what goal there could be behind it all. Though of course, he was very shortly not able to resist giving his own little speech, curt though it would be: "People have been killed by monsters, and this school is giving the education needed to destroy those things," he hissed out the word with extreme distaste, "To not want to be here if you have ideas, or to just want to further yourself... is selfish. I apologize for being forward, but I do not understand..." He added the last line in mainly for manners and for the fact that he was thoroughly embarrassed despite his fury.

Micajah wasn't even taken aback by the venom in Nathanial's words - instead he felt a little relieved. He'd been wondering how much longer the British boy was going to continue to hold in whatever it was that was biting his tongue, and he'd almost been tempted to tell him to just spit it out.

For he, too, had been watching Nathaniel's face and the different expressions that crossed over it again and again during the moments. He was watching Elijah too, of course, and was doing so even now as he wondered how the tiny boy would take to this outburst.

Micajah, for one, wasn't impressed. It was more like he was watching a child starting a tantrum, and he planned to n** it there in the bud. There was no reason for anyone to be uncivil towards others, and if he had to there was a need to make this other youth understand.

"I'm glad you don't understand, because it seems it would be a bit too much for you to grasp. Just because our reasons seem beyond your knowledge or even imagination doesn't mean you should spit on them as something selfish or even stupid."

Now who was the one being rude, being a bit childish?

"I'd almost ask you to apologize, not to me but to Elijah, but I feel that would be a waste. You simply need to grow up a little bit to understand that everyone is different."

Should this little phrase turn Nathanial against Micajah, and perhaps even Elijah against Micajah, so be it. But at least he'd said his peace.

The modest expression was wiped from Elijah's face and replaced with an expression of confusion slipped together with hurt as though his face was sculpted from clay. Dumbfounded was his next muddled look. Never had he meant to offend either of the boys and was pained in knowing he had done so, but that was where he was confused. Exactly how had he offended the British student? Sure his reasons were...a little shaky, but it wasn't like he so absentmindedly walked around ignoring the suffering of other people in the outside world. Elijah had even taken a school trip to China in order to see what help he could prove to be to the people there; it was only a shame he didn't have any specific skill that could assist them even when it seemed most everyone there did.

It was only natrual to search for a phrase that could make amends to the teenager, but with his mind in a frozen haze his searching was fruitless. How could he make things right anyway when he didn't understand his reasons for being here either. It wasn't like he didn't want to help people, but there was no core reason for him to be studying at this school. That in itself shut his mouth. He knew he didn't deserve to be here but regardless he wanted to stay, to see what he could make of himself as well as what he could do in the future with what he was blessed with at Shinkami. "I...umm..."

It surprised him more when Micajah suddenly spoke, substituting his lack of words with a view of his own opinion. Those large blue eyes looked to him in astonishment. Even a little admiration appeared in those depths. Micajah had indirectly defended Elijah when he made fervent his opinion, or maybe it was directly. Either way the youth was appreciative in some respect but also worried that Nathaniel would in turn find Micajah's statement quite offensive. He hoped a fight could be avoided; after all, this was started because the teen reasons for being at the school were not firm.

Nathaniel's emerald eyes widened in ferocity. Never in his life had he been so decimated before another person. Reduced and ridiculed for an outburst. Naive though he was, childish though he seemed, rude though he acted, never had he experienced such an anger. His fists clenched together, as well as his teeth, and he almost looked like he was going to pounce Micajah into the ground.

However, there was something holding him back. In his mind, there was a hand on his shoulder, gentle and warm... and for a moment... his eyes glazed over.

"Nathaniel... darling, don't take it to heart. Your father just doesn't want to see you act like this. It isn't proper my dearest son..." came the sweet voice, as lovely as any spring flower.

"Don't coddle the boy. He has to learn. How will he learn manners and control if you keep comforting him?" was the vicious retort of a man whose voice resembled the rough edges of a fine tooth saw.

"But that's all he is dear! A boy! You can't expect him to be perfect." The grip tightened on his shoulders in loving protection.

"I can expect him to be the proper British boy we're raising him to be, and that temper and rude mouth of his won't get him anywhere. He should take his mistakes and learn from them. If I scold him, it's to point them out for him. He's not unintelligent, he knows why."

Yes. I know why. Nathaniel's thoughts froze him in time. A flashback. Like so many that seemed to vanish. His mother pleading for him, his father... scolding him. And in the end, his father would always win. His mother would succumb and Nathaniel would be forced to learn from his mistakes the hard way... every single time.

"So not having motives doesn't seem stupid?" He asked, calmly. It was a scary sort of calm. His body has loosened up and he was looking at Micajah with curious compelling but extremely dangerous eyes. "You talk so high and mighty, as if you expect everyone to be on your level or below it. As if everyone in the world you live in always understands everyone. Though I do agree I was harsh, I also believe you should take your own advice."

His smile widened, and he folded his arms glancing to Elijah. His voice mellowed out to become softer, after all, the other boy hadn't said anything about it and it was true that Nathaniel did owe him an apology. Learn from your mistakes. Or never move on. Never get stronger. Never learn manners. So Nat would learn, albeit slowly.

"I apologize that I am unable to understand your motives for being at this school," but of course, Nat still had to have his own way of doing things. And apologizing really wasn't his style, however sincere it was.
