@ NewMoon: Well, if you've just tried out the picc, then you may not even know how nice it can sound since it's your first time. Yes, on average the picc seems screechy and annoying, but if you listen to Night on Bald Mountain by Mussoursky(sp?), the picc doesn't sound bad or annoying whatsoever.

Hihi!!! I'm a flutest as well, although I switch from picc to flute a lot... what ever my director needs me to do... I kinda hold the to leadership position in my symphonic band, and I love my section this year, because they all want to do thier best and they actually want to try, unlike my freshman year... Two years ago... ~shudders at the thought~

I have a concert in two days, and my band director is not happy with us... I'm in concert band(freshie), and we just can't count, which really frustrates me since I'm a perfectionist just like my BD. And I especially practiced on the song that we are playing with those two higher bands, since it's obviously going to be harder. Just very frustrating.

OOOOK SO... WORLD'S COOLEST RECITAL EVER TODAY!! At a recital for my private teacher's students, I saw a really good friend of mine that's a junior and the top flute (like top top XD) of her school's top top band, and when I performed, she performed right after me, and almost every single person that heard me told me that I sounded better than her... Mmk and get this: she's a junior, I'm a freshman! I'm like whoa!!!! XD XD XD Anyone else ever have awesome Aha moments like that?!

I had one moment like that. My bd put mein 2nd to last just because of one test. We were playing this one song one day, and he went through the flutes having us play this really high part. The three girls in front of me couldn't play it that high, but I nailed it. I was really mad after that, because I actually practice to try to move up, but he won't move me up a chair. Stuff like that happens all the time, and it makes me mad.

Awww, that sucks! sad In the beginning of the year, my BD organized us by alphabetical, and since my last name is S I got second flute part. For our first concert, which was to be played again for Halloween, had an arranged mix of Symphonie Fantastique--Witches' Sabbath and March to the Scaffold. The flutes who got 1st part couldn't really understand their music(save one), and I could definitely play the 2nd part. So after the first couple weeks of rehearsal, he assigned parts and I got first.
Now that I'm piccolo, I kind of automatically get first flute part, and I work my butt off to get that part, so I don't really have to worry about it.

I play teh Jazz flute and Piccolo! xd SO MUCH FUN! You get to use flutter tongue like ALL THE TIME! Not to mention you get to dance around while you play, it's a blast! I also play for symphonic band, I lead the section, we call ourselves the Flute Mafia ninja It's so much fun, except I have to instruct 15 flutes by myself during sectionals... O.o Anyone gone to a state solo competition here? Just so you know, it's a great experience, even if you get your a** handed to you like I did xd Came in 10th out of 12. Would've helped if I was actually able to breathe, I had a terrible cough... It sucked! But hey, I got to chill with my kick a** band teacher and my friend who also made it (both are flautists, it was so cool!) I'm starting to rant now, aren't I? I'll wrap this up then: Learn Jazz flute, it's so much fun!

I actually have played Night on Bald Mountain. We played it this year for our winter concert and also played a condensed version for pep band. Its a coolish song but--forgive me-- still hate the piccolo. Its not getting any better. But I am considering playing it in our 2010 marching band show. whee
