Illya snapped back to her conversation with the teenager. "Yes," she said firmly. "Your friends are all inside here. Everyone in town is in here, and quite a few people who don't live in town." She continued to rub the fox's ear as she looked around the room. "It's pretty packed in here," she said. "That's why you can't see them. This is a pretty big place--I've seen aircraft hangars smaller than this." Not many, but a few--she hoped that her confidence would do the trick, though. "Would you feel better if we looked for them, or would you like to stay here?" Either way, it seemed that this fox would be staying with her--they kept leaning into her hand, and they had sat down between her feet. She had indeed made a new addition to her household tonight.





With the kitten showing no resistance and instead pushing forward such that Kuni was now scratching the back of its head, the Dryad made his move. He grabbed the kitten by the scruff of the neck and stood up. The kitten didn't make a sound, and didn't even struggle, but even then, he worried. Had he offended the kitten? Would it hate him now for grabbing it?

It didn't matter. He needed to find out whose kitten this was. He couldn't stand to sit around here any longer wondering if he could keep it for himself.

She lifted her hand, letting the little guy sniff it. It didn't seem so sure at first, wandering back and forth as if trying to acclimatize itself to the situation that was going on. Mounia couldn't help but feel like the familiar was worried about what was going on. Familiars definitely had a 6th sense about things.

On closer inspection, it didn't seem like it. Or at least it didn't seem like the people had brought the familiars down in the first place. As she watched, it seemed that if any familiar got particularly attached to a person, that person was allowed to keep them if they wanted. It seemed a tad odd to her, but clearly it was comforting to a great many so who was she to say what was odd or not. She did kind of want to go forward and see if she could find a flitterrat to hold. There seemed to be several, most in similar shades of purple like they were from the same litter.

Foras had focused more on taking classes that were art related and maybe a few magic classes just so he could manage to do some simple things at least. He just read books or used the internet to learn how to take care of the, admittedly few, familiars that he did have. "No, I never did manage to take one of his classes." The Vespercat was curled up on his lap not and purring contentedly. It was a very calming sound, but he was thinking of his other familiars back in their room. Surely they wouldn't be hurt by whatever was out there.

"Are you looking forward to Grendel?" Foras was trying to find something for them to talk about to lighten the mood. Talking about their future would be a nice way to distract from the fact that this could...well turn out bad. He was just glad they were lucky to have been at the Academy when all of this had happened. They had talked about going into town....

She gently stroked the familiar until it settled in an uneasy state on her lap. It seemed like it was finally starting to calm down, which made her smile a little. She wasn't sure they were friends just yet, but it was definitely showing more signs of trusting her.

Arabelle finally plucked up the determination to go forward and actually pick up one of the flitterrats, rather than simply admiring them. She approached their spot and peered at them carefully. They seemed quite well-behaved and weren't bothered much by the press of bodies around them. One in particular seemed quite curious. It wandered up to Arabelle, tilting its head back curiously.

Smiling, for she had a soft spot for flitterrats, Arabelle offered her hand to the flitterrat. It gripped it with its small claws and sat back on its haunches, little nose and whiskers twitching. Then it simply hauled itself the rest of the way into Arabelle's hand.

She carefully brought the hand to her chest and began to pet the flitterrat. It seemed to enjoy the caresses, though was equally content with sniffing her and attempting to climb up her shoulder. Finally it got up to her shoulder, made it under the blanket, and seemed content to stay there. Arabelle laughed.

"Comfortable? Glad I could be of service!"

The familiar's fur was so soft! Before she knew it, Mounia was feeling herself even starting to calm down a little. She wasn't even aware that she had been stressed out, but she supposed it actually made sense given how bad the situation had been.

With the kitten in his hand, Kuni strode off in search of the kitten's source. No one seemed to be looking for a lost kitten, but at the center of the supply crate empire, he started seeing more and more kittens, many of them almost identical to "his." What was going on...?

What should she name this new addition to her family? Illya wondered. She had pets already, but most of them were named after ranks in the army based on their personality. That didn't seem right for this dignified spectrefox. They--she looked underneath them--she--needed a better, more dignified name. I'll call her Tendara, she thought. After Captain Tendara. She grinned at the memory of the dignified captain she'd once served under. Ah, she had such good memories of Tendara...
