Anyway, from what I can tell, it's a sort-of automatic ability, they don't control it.

Yup. It is... on its own, though that's not Ray's case, at least not yet, and it won't be the same as that, only the same level. It's just that when he had that flash of memory, the skills he attained from that intensive testing and training of sorts that has already been implanted within him comes back and he just does them naturally. He's from the Gifted Project, after all.
