I was just finishing up an edit for someone.... and started thinking about the propensity for people to want oversized and dramatic weapons... seriously. Just look at Cloud from FF7, Inuyasha, and about a bazillion others with massive swords or whatever.
All I can say is I'm quite fond of my correctly sized sword. Sure, it's not that long and would only pass as a shortsword in the hands of an average sized male. But by golly, I can kill people with it a lot easier than I can with a borrowed, longer, sword.
The bigger a weapon is, the harder it is to swing, the easier it is to see it coming, the further you have to keep it from your body, and all this in the hands of a good opponent and you'll find some nice normal sized sword in the ribs in no time.
Us realists are such spoilsports, eh?

Well, for a long time, I've favored finesse weapons in D&D... first the rapier, then, with the advent of The Complete Warrior, the Elven Thinblade.

Lucca Ashtear Well, for a long time, I've favored finesse weapons in D&D... first the rapier, then, with the advent of The Complete Warrior, the Elven Thinblade. I started my character out with a b*****d sword she used two-handed cause I really couldn't see someone her size using a greatsword. Then I got one hoisted on me anyways. But hey, it talks.

Lucca Ashtear We must teach you the art of powergaming, yes yes. *grabs cross and holy water* No, no, depart from me, thy vile monster of powergaming! See, everyone in our group came to an unspoken agreement that we wouldn't powergame and put our character's personalities above their stats. It's worked very very well so far. That and our DM came to a spoken agreement that he'd kill off powergaming characters to keep the group even. He hates powergamers.
