Not for them, Gion smiled, touched by Daemon's concern. They were both born and raised there, and they never quite got used to visiting the city. They are where they love to be, surrounded by the things they love. Besides, it's not just the two of them. Their son lives with them, and their granddaughter comes and goes, and their niece and nephew live there, and I believe one of THEIR children ... so they're not totally alone.

Oh? That's good!
Daemon replied happily.
Otherwise I would feel sad for them, because no one likes to be lonely.

Gion smiled warmly and winced as some snow blew into his eye.
Well, I'm told that when one is with one's true love, they are never lonely even if it's only the two of them for centuries, he told Daemon thoughtfully. I mean, it's not like I would know from experience or anything ... but I do know that Ulani and Ulrich's love is one of the strongest I've ever heard of.
Well except for his great great great great great great great great great great grandmother ...

Daemon sighed wistfully thinking of Yume and that he was a reall sucker for romance.
That sounds lovely.... it makes me hope the girls have done just as well. After all they can start families and have children...
He paused and realized something, something he hadn't thought about.
Oh dear... I seemed to have forgotten something in my peparations....

Gion blinked. Preparations? he questioned. What sort of preparations?
He ran out of connected snowbanks and slid down the ten-foot drift on his backside.

Remember I thought I was going to die, not be sealed up in a sword, not that I'm complaining. I digress though, the point is I made preparations for both Kyoko and Kara to make sure they would be well off. Well... as I've told you, I've seen the thread connecting Kara to another, who happens to be Long's son....
He paused and admitted sheepishly.
I completely forgot about clan politics, and in hindsight I should have warned Long.

I take it it's a complicated business, then, Gion mused. He started up the next drift.

Think of the clans like little self contained kingdoms, their holdings... which not just include physical land, but any businesses they might have, anything they've invested money into is also theirs. While leadership tends to go either way in gender by default in things like say marriage... the woman becomes part of the man's family.
Daemon just seemed to shrug.
This might not be an issue if I hadn't left a property the size which would allow a person to start their own family compound.

And why can't your daughters just settle there with their own families? Gion asked in confusion.

They could but the real question becomes which clan are they from.
Daemon replied back.
Because in the end that is what matters, Winters, has been because I married Yume considered a minor branch of the Mizu clan. Though it was agreed if the family grew in reputation.... it could grow to become a clan completely different. The question becomes then, will it still be a minor branch? If so.. then to which clan? Or would it just simply becoming another holding of the Lau clan?
He just seemed to hum a bit for a while as if to think of what else to add.
In truth, the Mizu family has never thought about this... it goes without saying since neither Kara nor Kyoko ever went to those gatherings of theirs.

Gatherings? Gion questioned, reaching the top of the drift and looking around again.

Remember when you asked me if they err... intermarry? They don't, but they aren't above taking all their children and throwing a gathering, which is inviting every clan they wish to make stronger ties with to party and bring their children. It's a matchmaking thing where they hope and pray the day before the children will be friends and maybe something more.
Daemon chuckled and then recalled.
Yume was happy she didn't have to go to them anymore, thought they were a waste of time.

Gion laughed, pretending to make light of the whole thing.
Yeah, it sounds sort of silly to me as well, he grinned. You can't just throw people together and expect something to come of it.
Though it was a good way to meet people, he thought to himself. He wondered if anyone in the Four Lands ever had anything like that ...
He shook his head. What was he thinking?

Ah... but stranger ways of meeting will happen...
Daemon seemed to zoned out a bit like he was remembering something from the past.
I once told Long when he worried about the kind of trouble the girls would get into. That no threat will come from the Lau family, for one goes after her she'll remain unscathed.... and then I just didn't add it was because he would fall in love instead.
