Cypress pried open the door of the teacher's lounge, sticking her head in before slipping quietly in through the door. There were so many subjects she wanted to study - she could hardly pick just one! Still, she cared for animals and plants and, seeing as she could always visit the Flora Gardens, she had decided to try and find Professor Lelaus and see if she could ask for some tutoring. Still, she was new and didn't quite know what the professor looked like! She asked a passing student and they pointed off to her right, but there were several professors in that direction. Cypress sighed and slowly approached the group, satchel over her shoulder, still rather shy. She approached the group and, looking at her feet, asked in a soft voice, Would any of you happen to be Professor Lelaus?

"Trans... substantiating?" Daggart stumbled over the word as he tried to imagine an Ipe ghosting through the volume he'd been reading, "They can move through solid objects?" Blinking he tilted his head to the side in surprise, impressed. He hadn't learned that when he'd been poking through that book!

As Lelause continued, Daggart bobbed his head, absoring the information and putting it away in a safe part of his brain. It was understandable that it would be a matter of precaution. Apparently they could very dangerous despite their appearances! Smiling, the choleric rocked back on his heels to get the blood flowing though his toes again and began to ponder what it would be like to have an Ipe for a familiar...

At least until Lelaus delivered the pop quiz. Standing upright he opened his mouth to speak but Abacus beat him to the punch. No matter, he still knew the answer and when the phlegm trailed off, he added his own thoughts, "They also live in the ruins left by the people that came before the Outsiders and Empyreans... yeah, mushrooms. I think you said they hoard them?" Daggart mentally shuffled through what he'd learned in class, eager to learn more.

However, when someone drew near and spoke up, the choleric turned to regard the newcomer. Additional students wasn't something that was uncommon at all, he just wanted to see who was asking which of them was Lelaus... and paused as familiarity struck him. A grin broke out and he turned further, elbowing Abacus in the side and nodding towards Cypress. It was one of the Spectres from the other night! He almost greeted her with her name and then remembered she'd recall nothing of the time she spent here. The smile faded a little as he gestured up to Lelaus, "This' Lelaus. Abacus an' I are tutoring if ya wanta join." Friendly and accomodating, Daggart exchanged glances with Abacus and stepped away to make room for Cypress.

Cypress smiled at both Daggart and Abacus. What was that around the boy's neck? Cypress got a nagging feeling, but dismissed it. Thanks! I'd love to. I'm not too late am I? she asked, looking to Professor Lelaus, a bit apprehensive. Hopefully he didn't like throwing monsters around like Abrid liked shooting off bullets. She hadn't taken P.E. and didn't know the slightest thing about anything physical yet.

((Hope that's okay; either Taro or Skie (can't remember) said that she might have very ghosty half-ish memories about the ball, so . . . yeah x.x ))

Abacus applied his pal to his forehead, giving himself a muffled smack! "Ruins! I forgot about those. It'd make sense, given their appearance and their ability to hide themselves," he laughed, grinning. "Oh! They also collect reeds and grass, but is that more for their nests or do they eat those, too?"

At the elbow, Abacus turned to Daggart with a questioning look on his face, before turning it into a grin. "Hello," he greeted, nodding in agreement, "Yep, I'm Abacus, and my friend here is Daggart. Don't worry -- you're just in time for the pop quiz!" He added with a grin, turning his attention back to Lelaus.

"Yeah, that's right." Lelaus replied as the two students began listing off the habitat and diet of the elusive Bael. "Looks like Lelaus actually taught you something." And he laughed, a cheerful, goodnatured sound. It was then that another Empyrean appraoched. Lelaus swivelled about to face her and flared his whiskers. "Why so it is true! This is Lelaus." He grinned and winked, thumbing himself in the chest for emphasis. "We're learning about the Bael and the Ipes, at the moment. If you'd like you can join us on that front. Luckily we're recapping some of the information about the Bael, which we learned in Class." Lelaus raised his eyebrows at her significantly, recognizing her as one of the newest crop. "So, you should be able to catch up on what you missed. As for the Ipes, everyone here is fresh on them. Well, aside from Lelaus." And the young Professor grinned happily again. "And on that note, the diet of the Ipes! They love cranberries, acorns, marigolds, bird's eggs - especially Robin's eggs - dandelions, salal berries, termites, aphids and dew water."

Daggart waved as he was introduced, offering a friendly smile before turning back to Lelaus with a look of interest. "Especially Robin's Eggs? Are robin's eggs hard to get?" Already the choleric's mind was clicking with ideas on how to catch a glimpse of the Ipes. They were curious folk and loved eggs - could he maybe set a trap of sorts in the flora garden to catch a glimpse of the creatures?

"What are salal berries? Are there any foodstuffs that they hate?"

Cypress smiled at Lelaus -- she could tell she was going to like him already! Will you be going over FurFurs too? she asked hopefully, though almost expecting the two boys to laugh at her. Trust the girl to want the cute and fluffy one, eh?

Cypress smiled and whipped out her notebook, jotting down notes on what Ipes liked to eat. On a second page, she stared a list of information for the Bael - "Can hide themselves, collect reeds and grass for nests - possibly eat as well? must research". She listened to Daggart's question about Robin's eggs. She didn't see why they'd be overly hard; you wouldn't catch her dare trying to take blue jay eggs though. She looked up at Lelaus at the salal berry question, quill poised to write the answer. Still, she did have a question of her own.

Do they prefer the dew off of any particular plant? Any of the ones they normally eat, or is there a special plant that they like the dew off of better than any other? she asked, voice soft, as always.

At Cypress' first question, Abacus tilted his head to one side in thought. "Furfur... They sound a bit familiar. Aren't they one of the few that can speak in our language?"

"And on that note," Abacus added, swiftly pouncing on Cypress' dew-related questions, "How would you go about gathering it? Would you have to take an Ipes to, say, the Flora Gardens every morning to drink, or is it possible to gather it?" Then again... if that was the best time to collect dew, wouldn't it also be the best chance to see one, too? He threw a side-glance to Daggart, wondering if he was thinking along the same lines.

Lelaus practically vibrated with the excitment of so many questions to answer and his tail began to flare and swish behind him. "Yeah, especially robin's eggs. Something about the consistency or flavour, I think. They're not too hard to get. Some are harvested from the Flora Gardens from time to time, and many more are brought in from the Northern forests that are put up for sale as supplies in Gregor's shop. As for the Salal, they're just a berry, pretty common beyond the gates, and easy enough to grow in a personal plot. Some folk in the Choleric districts especially grow them in their gardens." Lelaus licked his lips and paused a moment, thinking. Then he resumed answering questions with the barest of pauses. "There's not really any foods that they collectively hate. But like you or me, each Ipes might have certain things it doesn't like so much. You can find that out from whatever Ipes you're dealing with. They especially like dew that collects in flowers, but again, personal preferences might vary between specific Ipes. You can gather it from the Flora Gardens easily, and best times to gather it are in duck times, especially at sunrise or sunset. But if you grow plants in your own quarters you can simply use the dew that collects there. And yah, you can totally buy it prebottled from Gregor's supplies or Euphrasia's stores." Lelaus then swivelled his glance back to Cypress and smiled. "I won't be doing Furfur at the moment, but perhaps when we're done with the Ipes and the Bael, we can move on to them." Then he flicked his glance up to Abacus and nodded. "Yeah, the Furfur are the one of the ones that speak our language. What they choose to do with it is another matter."

"Alright," Lelaus seguayed. "Moving on. Likes and Dislikes. What sorts of things do the Bael like and dislike?"

Cypress frowned. She hadn't taken the class, as it appeared that Abacus and Daggart already had. Still, she was willing to hazard a guess. Well, I don't know, really, but I'd imagine that they'd hate open spaces or things that it's hard to camoflauge against she said hesitantly. It made sense to her, but what about to a Bael? She had no clue, really.

Abacus nodded and made a note of that interesting tidbit for later. So dawn and dusk... He could always go into the gardens and claim to be training for sparring, if anyone questioned his appearance. But what would be the best way to attract one? Spar against his shadow? Take pictures and pray on their curiosity?

He returned to the present at the questions on Bael. "They're a shy monster, more prone to hiding than confrontation... I think they'd dislike predators and Outsiders -- at least those unfortunate in their service," he added, nearly spitting out the last word, "I'm not sure how a wild Bael would react, to be honest. But as far as likes... er, grubs? Affection? Shiny little baubles to decorate their nests?"
PostPosted: Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:55 am

Daggart nodded, tucking that information away: eggs at Gregors, berries in gardens and choleric districts. Easy enough. He and Abacus could always go looking for an egg and then try to bait one into the open. He turned to scan the room as Lelaus spoke, still listening but not really looking.

"Dawn and dusk?" As the professor finished, he turned back and grinned, "Thanks!" There was a heavy hint that he might go looking for one himself.

He pondered for a moment. The Bael were small and didn't really ever stand on their feet... "What about being confined? Wouldn't they not like that because it could hurt their legs? And they probably like being in groups, or at least not alone, yah?"

Lelaus grinned. "All good guesses. Shows you're learning about the Bael to make these suppositions. Now discounting the food items... The Bael like soft music, and also drumming of the skin or tribal sort. They warm bedding and cozy nests, they like to be stroked gently or licked by their own kind. And they love to fly together as a group, which can turn into a tribal group dancing that involves wheeling about in circles. It's really a sight to see." Lelaus clasped his hands together. "The Ipes on the other hand enjoy sewing, bathing especially in dew collected in flowers, planeswalking through things, listening to birdsong, chasing dust motes or spores, and the Ronwen."
PostPosted: Fri Aug 08, 2008 9:48 pm

Cypress jotted everything down in her notes, smiling as the professor mentioned the Bael's dancing. Still, now she was starting to feel guilty about her idea of only owning one. It seemed that they were very social creatures. "Professor, if the Bael is so social with its own kind, how do they behave for Empyreans? I would think they'd be rather lonely . . . " she commented while finishing her notes on the Ipes. "Oh, and what do the Bael's eat?" she asked somewhat sheepishly, looking at the two boys as she asked, thinking that they already knew.

Abacus sighed wistfully at Lelaus' words. How lucky was the professor! He couldn't help but to be envious of Lelaus' luck to see the Bael dancing. "Do the Bael owned by Empyreans dance as well, professor?" He asked curiously, "And do they interact with other species like the Ipes with the Ronwen?"

When the question of Bael food came around, Abacus grinned. "Lelaus asked that right before you came in," he laughed. "Mushrooms, insects, grubs... er, did I forget any?"
