She turned to face her, to ask her why, but the running, the adrenaline coming and going, the moving the furniture twice, all the events of the day caught up with her all at once and as she turned she stumbled, the world going black as she headed for the floor.

Maria caught the girl and laid her down gently. "Antonio! Come here!"
He came up quickly. "What happend?"
"She just fainted..."
"Well...let's get her into bed and let her get her rest." He picked up the girl and placed her into the bed while Maria tucked her in. "I'll get her some crackers, a soda, and a cool cloth."
"Thanks Darling," Maria brushed the girl's hair away from her face. "Poor dear's exhausted."

She lay there for several minutes, before groaning a bit and opening her eyes. "Wha..." she asked, her head still spinning. Was he on the floor? Would the room ever stand still?

Maria smiled down at her, "It's alright dear. You fainted. You're probably so exhausted though that it's a wonder you've made it this far."
Antonio came back in with the ordered items. "Ah, she's awake."
Maria took the cloth and laid it on Skunk's head. "Now, I have some soda and some saltine crackers here and I'd like you to try to eat them before lunch. You need your strength."
"I'll call into your school and let them know you will not be attending today due to poor health. I do believe that my darling wife has no other plans other than to sit by your bedside all day."
Maria blushed, "It is true. I do intend to see to your recovery and rest."

She eyed Antonio warily all the time he was in the room. "They won't believe it unless the hag calls," she said to maria, still watching Antonio.

"They will believe it. Eric has seen to it that all of your custodial and parental can now be handled by us. You are under our protection until after your trial."
Maria nodded, agreeing with Antonio. "This is true. Eric has seen to it that you are able to stay here for as long as you'd like."
Antonio smiled and left the room, feeling her uneasiness. "I will return if there are things I need to relay to you," He called as he left.

"So.... she said slowly to maria. eyes on the door, "Basically what you're saying is it could easily be arranged that no one would notice if I vanished?"

"You're right, we don't know you. Not well. But we know enough about you to know that we want the chance to get to know you. We want the chance to give a home, friends, and a family if you'll accept it. It's as if a genie granted Antonio's fondest wish when you came yesterday. We had always wanted someone that would liven up the house. It really is too big for just us and Eric. And to see Eric actually take an honest interest in someone...it's a miracle. You're just what we've always hoped for, dear."

"He.... took an interest in me?" she asked, her blood running cold, thinking of the man who had bailed her out of jail and seemed so... amused... but how upset she was. the feeling of power that radiated off of him. He was someone used to getting his own way.... She shuddered.

Maria smiled softly, "Certainly not the kind of interest you're thinking. Eric picks up cases every now and then to aid some of the children here in the city. He's very charitable to the local orphanages and the local institutons that help get kids off of the street. When Romulous took a liking to you, well, Eric couldn't do anything but help. That wolf means the world to Eric."

"Well...For you to be happy and healthy. To maybe come to know us and let us be there for you. And maybe to follow some of the rules that he's set down for you." She smiled, "What did you think he'd ask for in return dear? Eric is not a bad man, just very alone. Romulous is the only one who's ever understood him. Lord knows I've been trying for years to get him to smile and relax."

"what...kind of rules....? What will happen when I break them?" she asked, still very much waiting to hear that what she is afraid of is the case.
