Kel made his way to the outdoor section of his workshop and lifted the large entry way to the indoor section. On the way to the storage crates, he tossed the bar of etherium on the work table and drew open an old exposed slot full of ore. He could see what he needed immediately and without any real digging grabbed a large chunk of a dull blue-green ore and a large yellow orange crystal fragment.

"Since I have the materials, may as well get the furnace going.", Kel mumbled as he placed the raw materials on the work table as well as a small crucible.Since everything was in place, Kel settled in for what should be a fairly easy job for the evening.

Kel worked fairly late into the night, spending most of his time combining the materials he needed before the pour. Hammering the shield into shape took little time, grinding and buffing slightly less time, then coloring and engraving which instead took more concentration. It wasn't terribly late by the time Kel had finished. He was a bit ahead of schedule but figured that was just more opportunity to get some rest. After wrapping the shield in some burlap to keep it clean and free of dust, Kel set it on the shelf with other completed crafts before retiring to the house for the night.

Kel followed his routine for the next morning like clockwork. He prepared breakfast for his family and had a bit of it himself before heading into the shop to clean up. His only real break in routine is that he decided to clean up shop before training rather than after.

Maryl slowly stirred from her sleep and sat up in her bed. She let out a shallow yawn as she rubbed her eyes free of sleep and shifted her stiff shoulders. After sliding out of bed, Maryl started across the cold floor to her bedroom door, then stepped out into the hall.

Menos found himself approaching the cataclysm's edge fairly quickly, despite having lost the dirt path some time ago. After making his way to the store front side of the complex, He paused and looked around the open field by the shop and the empty work area. It wasn't extremely early in the morning, but was it within business hours he wondered? Giving a quick tap of the door, Menos called out, "Hello? Kel?"

Seth emerged from her room fully dressed as she paced down the hall toward the stairs. "Morning," she said to Maryl as she slipped on by and traveled down the stairs to the first floor and turned for the kitchen.

Kel paused his training in mid stance as he heard his name called out nearby. He turned his sword around in hand and marched toward the shop side of his home to notice Menos standing at the front door. "Ah, it's the king elect," he called out toward Menos as he approached he his shop. Once within reasonable speaking distance, Kel stuck his sword in the ground and leaned on it, "What brings you by?"

Moriarty returned in the morning to pick up the shield he had requested the night before. He came to find Menos talking to the blacksmith he was to pay. "Well hello there." He said, nodded to the two. "How's the shield looking?"

Kel held up one finger to Menos to say One moment, before turning to face Moriarty. "It's complete.", he stated briefly before lifting his sword from the ground, turning, and approaching the gate to the workshop area. After entering, Kel made his short trip to a shelf laden with covered objects. First he set his sword against the end of the shelving, then took a much rounder object from the wall and drew away the burlap cloth to unveil a small round shield. It caught a bright reflection off the morning sun as he held it up.

Seth's brief word of greeting shook away some of Maryl's grogginess, getting her eyes open wide as she felt a need to hurry after Seth down the stairs, "Sis, wait! I sensed something! Something about the people of fire!" She managed to catch up but only because Seth was headed to the kitchen anyway. Noticing Seth was all dressed up and ready to go out, Maryl paused, "Are you going to work early?" She felt a bit disheveled at the moment, being still barefoot and in her pajamas.

"It looks nice, and I like the craftsmanship and detail." Moriarty said, examining the shield. He looked at all sides of the shield, then slid his arm into the straps. The hourglass on the shield began to pulse slowly, from white to black. "Here, your payment. I'm feeling generous, so I'll tip ten percent as well." He said, and offered the gold to Kel. He turned to address Menos. "What do you think?" He said.

Menos kept up, making sure not to touch anything as he entered the workshop after Moriarty and Kel. Admittedly he hadn't known the first thing about a smith's workplace, and the machinery and tools about the area were entirely foreign aside from the obvious things. He had to clear a bit of his hair to get a better look at Moriarty's new shield and inspected it carefully. The design stood out fairly quickly to him as he replied, "Interesting. I hadn't pegged you for a devout to the god of time." He glanced over to Kel, "I must admit, the royal smiths would be jealous."

Kel took the money and placed it on a fairly advanced looking pressure scale on his worktable. Wheels mounted on the back of the scale pointed to values to count the money by weight as Kel took note on his notepad. To check for foreign objects, Kel stuffed his hand in the bag and jingled it around a bit. After finding nothing suspicious, he poured the bag out into a numbered lockbox on the floor and shut it. "Okay, pleasure doing business with you."' Kel nodded to Moriarty. Not making eye contact as he remembered fairly vividly about the scrutiny of the smiths guild, Kel replied to Menos, "They are. There's a reason why my shop is so far from the marketplace."

Seth nodded to Maryl, "Yeah, I have to pop in at least once a week, unless I'm on vacation. I skipped quite a few days this week, so I better show up soon. Don't wanna get fired." Seth sighed, somewhat disillusioned by her work atmosphere. "Ah well, maybe I'll just show up on the minimum required days.", she smiled, "Don't you have to get to the new castle library today?"

"Well, not until noon," Maryl replied, scratching her head. "So uh... Why do you have a job anyway?", Maryl asked nervously. Attempting to explain herself, she put her index fingers together bashfully and looked down at them, "I mean, Dad asked me if I wanted to go to school some time ago, and I decided not to, but I'm... I'm not sure now." Getting a bit red-faced, Maryl looked away. "I think I wouldn't mind being home-schooled. I think I'm pretty good at studying on my own. It got me this far, and at least it won't get me a citation at the library for goofing off at work."

"Well... To answer your question, It's kinda nice having my own income. I mean Dad paid for school. I blazed through that pretty quickly, and even got my masters in engineering just last year. Dad paid for ballet... Well I kinda dropped out of ballet. I don't think that made him happy." Seth looked over her shoulder nervously to make sure her father hadn't sneaked up on them. Since the coast was clear she turned back to Maryl, "I know he never said anything but I get the feeling sometimes."

Maryl froze in confusion and surprise. It probably wasn't a secret, but she spoke quietly as she had to ask, "Masters? As in like masters degree? already? How?" Maryl lost sight of the ballet concern, which was probably the main point, but she had to know. She just had to know the big secret.

"Yeah, I went to college early. Some stuff about college level comprehension, and learning advanced things quickly, really high IQ," Seth stated quickly trying not to get off track, "The point is, I should have apologized, I didn't, and I'm scared to." She stopped and scratched her head thinking about it for a moment. "I guess that isn't necessarily why I got a job but... I guess there are a few reasons."
