"Of course there is," Aragost replied, his tone harsher than he had intended. He bit his tongue, figuratively and literally, and murmured softly, "I apologize ... it was not your fault ..."
He was silent for a moment, and he bowed his head slowly.
"I ... am the only one ... who has tested the limits of this magic," he murmured. "Even the Valar ... in creating this world ... did not come even close to their limits ... they could have done more ... so much more ... and yet they were wise ... they did not ..."
And he grew silent again, remembering.

Lin blinked, taking in waht had happened.
"I'm sorry," she replied, "I brought up a sad memory."
She was use to it by now, though Elros and Sir Valdemar had never been harsh in answering her, she recongized the signs when she saw it. Lin wondered, if that was the burden of growing so old, was that you had all these sad memories of how things should have been, of things that happened, of things... that no longer existed.

Aragost was silent again, and he stepped away from the table.
"It is fortunate," he murmured, turning his head away, "that none of you are learning that tongue ... Lin ... promise me that you will never ... never ... try to learn that tongue ..."

Seriously was she that preditable? Well that was kind of a stupid question and not to mention he did know just about everything. Or everything. Lin had considered learning it after she knew there was some things that could just not be read without learning, but since it bothered him so much.
Though she could kind of see why it bothered him so much.
"Okay!" Lin replied, "Not that one then."

Aragost smiled from within the shadows of his cowl, but it was a smile of relief, and nothing more.
"Thank you," he murmured softly. "Thank you."
And he turned back to them and straightened, back to his usual self.

"I still don't understand what this has to do with why the runes on my bow will only work in this world," Celebor said suddenly, stepping away from the wall. "I mean ... if the magic is so powerful, why only here? Why not in Gaia?"

"I would suspect it has to do with the nature of the worlds," Kara finally spoke up, "Gaia was not created through the power of word as far as I know, and even if it was, it would have been a language completely different from this one. In addition, there were different deities that focused on a specific race, all races came to be in Gaia in different ways, though I digress... That kind of power, cannot exist in Gaia, because the language, the nature of it self does not exist in Gaia. If that makes any sense...."

Aragost, for the first time in a very long time indeed, was rather impressed.
"Very good, Kara," he murmured, bowing his head in acknowledgement. "That is exactly correct ... even if ... your world were created from words ... like ours ... the language is not the same ... and so the magic of this world ... when it is based on silent words ... will not work in other worlds ..."
The miracle was that if the magic was being used by a person who was born with the magic inside them, it would still work.

Celebor looked in amazement from Aragost to his grandmother and back, and back again. "Oh," he murmured. "I ... think I understand now."
What a curious idea.
"Thank you," he smiled faintly.

Lin wondered if there were any books back home about Gaian magic. She had never bothered to learn, but now she was curious.
Like that was new.
"Thank you Aragost," Lin giggled as she hopped off of her mother's lap.

The idea interested Kara, though she filed it away for perhaps future research. It had been a long time since she had worked with runes or anything else just for the sake of doing so now that she thought about it.
"So, both of you have your questions answered?" she glanced at Lin, "For the most part?"

Celebor smiled and nodded. "Yes, mine has been answered," he assured Kara - and Aragost. He bowed his head again at the dark man. "Thank you very much. I will be sure to tell Sir Valdemar what you have told us the next time I see him."
He headed over to the table and picked up his bow, then returned it to his bag.
"At any rate, I at least have to be up very early," he smiled, "so perhaps we should be getting to bed. It's very late."

Lin thought about it, she always had questions, but for now, "I'm good right now... and if I don't sleep I won't get up."
And she really wanted to be up the next day so she could more things. Like go with Adan this time, or something. Or visit Halmir and Arthael... she had to do that too.

Kara rose from her seat with a smile, "You are right," she told Celebor, "I guess we should be going then."
She bent over a bit to take Lin's hand so the little girl wouldn't run ahead of her this time.
"Thank you for taking the time," Kara murmured to Aragost with a small bow, "And I hope you have a good night."
Since she didn't know if he had the night shift or not.

Aragost bowed his own head back at them, smiling to himself in the shadows of his cowl.
"You are more than welcome," he murmured softly. "If you ever ... have any questions ... feel free to ask ..."
