The trees in this area of the wood are ancient and dense enough to block out most of the light. The floor is carpeted in a rich coating of moss and fallen leaves, all a deep shade of scarlet. Eventually you become aware of a low whispering sound coming from above you. You look up.

There is something pale and strange in the dark webwork of branches, something moving… you receive the impression of long, crooked fingers like broken twigs, bright eyes that seethe with malice; it is whispering at you…

When you come back to yourself no time seems to have passed at all, but the look of the sky and the numbness of your legs suggest that you have been standing in the same spot, motionless, for several minutes. Something distracted you, but you can't remember what it was.

A broken twig lies in your path. Bending down to retrieve it, you notice that it has a faint spicy scent and the inside of the wood is green and pliable. Something has passed through here recently.

Either due to luck or your own tracking skills you discover a fine hair caught low to the ground on a branch, almost invisible against the mottled loam of the forest floor. This is good evidence of an animal's trail.

You win three points this turn.

When the fog of whatever that thing had done cleared, Maggie remained standing stock-still for several seconds, even though she was quickly losing feeling in her legs. It was gone. Shouting would not help. Kicking a tree would not be fair to the tree and would only hurt her foot.

Deep breaths. Deeeeep breaths.

When she finally had her temper under control she sighed, shook the numbness out of her legs, and left a small offering meant to placate malevolent Spirits at the base of the tree the thing had been in before she moved on.

Llyr? Again?! Gabriel narrowed his eyes at the retreating back of the man and turned to look in the direction the fox had fled.

... no thank you, Hallucination Llyr, he had no interest in your Hallucination Advice.

Gabriel struck off in the direction the fox has disappeared, hoping that their little interruption hadn't ruined his chances of getting another good look at the beast.

Sophia was lucky. She found a trail that looked like it must be some small mammal. Perhaps a coyote or a fox?

A subtle irregularity on the ground catches your eye. You take a closer look: there's a muddy rabbit print embossed on one half of a fallen leaf. It may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it could lead to bigger and better things.

You win one point this turn.

You happen upon a clearing. At the very center lies a fairy circle of mushrooms, unusually large, and though the clearing is abandoned you experience an eerie sensation of being of watched.

Mist began rising from the damp forest floor not too long ago; now it's all around you, muting the autumn colors behind a ghostly bluish veil. You can still see well enough to stick to the path you've chosen, but as you walk or ride on you begin to catch glimpses of something white showing through the sparse yellow leaves of a buckthorn hedge.

You investigate.

Unfortunately it is only the skeleton of a large stag, stripped of flesh but otherwise almost perfectly intact; time has bleached its bones to the stark paleness that distracted you. A single wild rose has grown up through one of its eye sockets.

You do not win or lose any points this turn.

Eloise continued on her way when a strong scent caught her attention. She looked carefully at the tree next to her and examined the dark spot on it. It was without a doubt fox urine. She found herself growing excited to know that she was back on the right trail. After her small fall she was afraid she had wasted too much time. Gathering her skirt in her hands she lifted it just high enough to keep it from tangling with the root sticking out of the ground and continued on her way.

Thorne's fingers brushed against the old trail, brow furrowing. The wardwood was playing with him today, and he cursed the fox that had drawn him in this far out from his usual range. Going off of what he had seen so far, he finally stood and continued on.

Jack frowned as he examined the branches. They were old enough as not to be very promising, but the trail could be well-used. He supposed that it was worth a try. "Alright, then. Let's go. Unless that spirit is having a go at us, we may as well carry on."

Renaud groaned between clenched teeth as he rolled off a now badly bruised shoulder, the bundle of bird and coat held firmly in his arms. He didn't quite have a sense of the pain, but the fall from the tree certainly hadn't been pleasant. He waited for the forest to stop spinning. In spite of the struggling bird, he pulled himself up to a sit and strained to reach his wine bottle, which had remained undisturbed at the base of the tree.

After a clumsy drink, he set the bottle down again, fought to stand up, and stepped over near where the fox print had been found. Renaud set his bundle on the ground and bound the kingshawk with the free sleeves of his ruined jacket. Only the bird's head could be seen, bloodied in one eye, and it hissed and shrieked what could only be bird profanities at the man who had captured it.

Renaud shot the bird a dirty look and stood up, "Keep fussing, fox bait. I'm sure that'll keep the predators away while you sit there bleeding on the ground." The kingshawk hissed in defiance, but fell quiet once more as the man stepped away. Renaud snatched up his bottle and returned to Glastyn and the mossy rock where he resumed waiting. Perhaps the bloodscent would entice a hungry fox into making an appearance.

The surrounding forest was eerily silent, likely disturbed by all the commotion. The only sound was the harsh panting of the kingshawk as it exchanged glares with Renaud.

As Told By Ginger

You happen upon a blood-spattered branch, but there is no sign of the creature that once sat there. Investigating further, however, you find a few tattered hawk feathers lost among the leaves. This scene tells a story you will probably never know.

You win three points this turn.
