Ginelle Ginny Alaine DeLuccia

. Thinking . . Speaking . . Action .

Ginelle thought. Most plants were the same in all their basic needs, so she thought that she would list some of them. "They also need sunlight and oxygen. Most plants need Soil as well for nutrition needs." Hopefully that was the answer the professor was looking for. She was trying to make up for her mistake earlier by getting something right in the class.

User ImageAmelia blinked something was different what Ginelle said. Something about the way she said it. Most plants need soil. Didn't all? Frowning, she believed all did. She thought of water lilies and such that grew in water, but they still had their roots at the bottom, right? She was uncertain of that answer, but didn't want to point it out, for fear she might be wrong. Or making Gin look bad. Those were the only two choices. So instead, she waited to see what the teacher had to say.

Ginelle was proud of her answer. Until she realized she said they needed oxygen. "Uh, I'd like to revise my answer. They don't need oxygen, they need Carbon Dioxide..." She was confident that not all plants needed Soil, as long as they are given the correct nutrients. Some can just live in the water, some can live off of certain dust particles. Maybe they were getting too specific with their answers? Plants just needed the correct care for their type.

"What did I miss?" Olli said, rushing into the greenhouse. She had had to take a detour on her way back from the hospital wing.

“He lives the poetry that he cannot write. The others write the poetry that they dare not realise.” - Oscar Wilde

Nathaniel waved at Olli. Being the only other Hufflepuff he knew of, he thought it was cool to have a senior around. "She's asking questions about how to take care of plants." he whispered while pointing at the blackboard. He turned to the teacher, raising his hand. Since he hadn't been present these few classes, might as well give his opinion. "Some plants need fertilizer to grow strong, but you also need to think about each of their characteristics. Some need a humid environment, others bloom under the shade. You don't plant an apple tree in the tropics." His great-grandpa was the worst gardener ever. Nathaniel only needed to remember the mistakes and give out the opposite of what he saw.

Smiling at the answers given by the class, Stars felt satisfied that some lessons had been learned, although she wondered why there weren't that many pupils calling out answers. Until Olli came in a bit rushed and dazed.

"Olli, please find a seat and as Nathaniel said, we're going to be going back to the basics."

She waited until the pupil had sat down before speaking.

"All the answers are good, although Ginny, plants need both, although most of the time you hear about them taking in CO2, at night they respire like we do, but it's not breathing.

However Nathaniel, a little wider reading if you were interested."
The professor summons a book titled "GROWING DECIDUOUS FRUIT TREES IN THE TROPICS" by G. Giesberger.

"You may find that they survive in a different way to the apple trees we're used to."

She reads a short extract

Quote:
In the tropical countries near the equator, such as Indonesia and Kenya, however, the situation is different from that existing in the subtropics.

In the medium-altitude areas, temperatures are so high and even throughout the year, that branches can continue growing and remain leafy, at least at their apex. Below the leafy apex, however, the branches are bare, because after shedding of the senescent leaves has occurred no sprouting of the axillary buds and development of lateral branches occurs.

"Does anyone have any comments on that? The vocabulary is more complex than we're used to in this greenhouse."

User ImageAmelia frowned, trying to understand. She raised her hand almost automatically, then almost lowered it. Frowning, she hesitated, then straightened it again. "So...because it's warm there, the trees don't lose their leaves." She knew there was more to it. The leaves didn't grow underneath. But why, she couldn't say. That was what was confusing. There the technical language threw her.

Nathaniel was definitely frowning. There were so much technicalities in the text that he barely understood anything."So even if they don't lose their leaves, I think the text also mentioned that they don't have any new buds who can transform into flowers and then fruits or new branches ? Wouldn't that mean those tree would stay in the same leafy state. Maybe I should've compared growing apple trees in the Arctic." he'd muttered that last sentence since he didn't expect his teacher to pull such a complicated book.

User ImageAmelia blinked. That must have been what the text meant by axillary buds and lateral branches. Extra stuff that a tree would grow into. So that meant..."It's not really growing is it? It's staying stagent." She mispronounced it, but her meaning was clear; it was staying stagnant, not growing at all. But why would it do that? She tried not to sigh, why was it whenever she figured something out, she always had a question afterward? Couldn't she completely understand something on her own, without asking questions? Shaking her head at herself, she wrote down the meaning of the excerpt, deciding not to ask anymore questions this class. She was tired of coming off stupid, as she believed she was. She knew she was smart enough to figure things out on her own, she just had to give herself the chance. That was optimistic thinking there.

Feeling a little regretful for pulling out such an advanced book, Stars quickly sent it back to her private bookshelf. She considered the text again in her head and thought how some of the words didn't make much sense to her in that context. Surely apex is just a part of the leaf not of the plant structure...
Making sure her pupils do not feel abandoned by her own questions, she decided to conclude.

"Well, the lesson to be learnt here is that there are many astonishing things plants can do, but we should also remember that they can adapt to their surroundings if they are given the time to. It may take thousands of years, or it could be as easy as growing towards the light source."

"Ok, so we established some basic needs of a plant, let's think, what kind of conditions would maximise the growth of say... devil's snare?"

User ImageCocking her head to the side, Amelia watched as Professor Star placed the book back on the shelf. Were they that wrong? She glanced back at Nathaniel, to see what he thought, but she was already moving on. Worried about being wrong again, she hesitated, but told herself she could answer it. So, she raised her hand and responded quietly, "It needs to be someplace dark and damp like a cellar. And" she hesitated again, remembering truly made it grow. Not wanting anything to die, she made up the second half with a blush, "have a spell on it so that it thinks somethings on it so it grows more." Her nod was confident, though her face bright red.

Stars smiled and praised Amelia for the first sentence. However she was puzzled slightly, "Where did you hear about it growing more under strain?", she asked.

Since the lesson was veering more towards questions, Nathaniel listed to Amelia's answer and took notes. Who knows ? Learning about the plant could be useful. Devil's snare... A dangerous trap.
