Ernst was not expecting to stay long, but when Emma had offered him something to drink, he couldn`t refuse. Besides, he needed some rest. He nodded in appreciation and smiled slightly. "Thank you kindly, Fräulein."

As Emma prepared the tea, Ernst carefully took off his gear and sighed in relief. It was such a pain to tote around, but without it, he was just as vulnerable as any other human.

Ernst jumped when Farkson spoke. He looked the young boy up and down, wondering if he would be any threat. But then, the tired inventor shrugged, and rubbed his hands together to warm himself. "I found them in the forest just outside my cabin." The German grumbled. "They were trying to attack me, you know. I had to protect myself."

Emma returned a few minutes later, holding a steaming mug that she pressed into Erns't hands. "You're welcome, sir. And in regards to those crystals...you found them before I arrived at the encampment? When you were with my husband?"

Ernst eagerly took the mug and nodded in appreciation again before sipping a bit of the tea. He relaxed a tad, now that he was warmer and in a relatively safe environment. With those creatures going around, he could not even trust being in his own home.

Ernst nodded. "Ja, that is correct. The crystals were trying to shoot beams at us. I`ve never seen an inanimate object so bent on killing something."

He thought for a moment. "They are inanimate, yes?" The inventor couldn`t be so sure now, that he had been exposed to this rather traumatic situation and to the existence of magic. " I`d say that someone was controlling them."

"Hmmm, that's not right," He shook his head worried."Those crystals were forged by feeding something black magic, and then killing it."

He shuddered."This is bad, how many more crystals are there?"

Farskon realized he was like him; someone who was pulled into soemthing they hardly understand."I know how you feel mate, I had to take a few drugs to keep myself from panicking; magic is weird stuff."

He coughed."It's most likely that the crystals are being controlled by the vampire himself, but their hunger for magic is natural."

"The crystals themselves? Yes. The intelligence behind them, no." Emma said, clicking her fingers. The temperature in the air around Ernst raised slightly, warming the poor inventor. "I was told about them...damned things tried to kill me too."

Ernst`s eyes widened. "Black magic? Is this what it is about?" He opened up his notebook and jotted something down in a barely legible handwriting. "Black Forest, black magic . . . I would have never guessed", he muttered to himself.

He looked back up to Farkson. "These are all of the ones that tried to attack me, and the kind lady`s husband." The German tapped his pencil nervously against his page of notes. "You mean there are more?"

He sipped a bit more of his tea. "I think I`ll be needing more than a few drugs to get over this . . ." Again, Ernst seemed astounded by Emma`s magic. It seemed the poor human would never cease to be amazed by it. "Thank you again, Frau." He nodded understandingly. "I don`t know what their problem is, to attack a lady like you. As for me . . . I`ve just lived peacefully in the Forest all my life. Why attack now?"

"I have been attacked by much worse, believe me." Emma replied, puzzled that he thought her kind.

She was still not used to being good.

"If my sorcery makes you uncomfortable I will hold back." she said apologetically.

"I'll hold back as well," He nodded."The vampire wants revenge on us humans; for a war that happened so long ago. We had driven back almost all other sentient beings, and well they all disappeared to a mirror of our world."

Farskon waited for him to take it in, and continued."His original plan was to get me to merge both of the worlds, and to start a war; ironically I did the opposite, and defeated him. Now he's back, and well his goals seem unchanged."

The inventor chuckled a bit nervously. "Oh, no, it`s quite fine by me . . . Your magic will just take a bit of getting used to." Yes, especially when he grew up in an environment which was completely industrial. Where was all the magic then?

But Ernst did not seem impressed. He was a logical man, and Vaswedes` plan did not seem very logical to him. "Why can`t he stay in his mirror world, then? I am sure that it is much better than this one. He won`t have to deal with the humans. Another war seems unnecessary. . ." Ernst rubbed his shoulder subconsciously, where an old war wound marred his skin. "And we humans have enough on our hands already."

Ernst winced. Even the word 'war' brought the pain back into his fresh war wounds, and images of the trenches. But he cast them from his mind as soon as they came in.

Emma watched as Ernst's aura fluctuated; while she could not see the flashbacks of the trenches, she knew that he was remembering something painful. She had her fair share of war wounds. "I know the feeling. Technology still baffles me, I can't seem to get used to it."

"He's insane, and very old, he was alive during the war, and the mirror world isn't entirely perfect either." He sighed,"He wants revenge, and he sees us as a mistake, and curiosity, something that needs cleansing."

"Vaswedes is an old fashion kind of bloke, while we live in the 21st century were you can forgive and forget, and well he's all about prophecies, and destinies." Farskon almost laughed, if the situation wasn't so dire.
"Oh Emma technology is wonderful, cars are much better than horses, and cell phones are genius." Farskon added with a nervous grin.

"Old fashioned? How old is he? Prophecy and destiny have their place, but they should not rule one's life."

There were fine lines at the corners of Emma's eyes, and her posture spoke of an age beyond her physical appearance.

"Not sure, but he's much older than you Emma," Farskon replied bluntly."He told me he was around before the Roman Empire was established."

Ernst immediately frowned. "Cleansing, eh?" He took a long sip from his tea cup, as though hoping it would clear his thoughts. He jotted something else into his notebook. Cleansing was obviously not a term that he liked to hear. Again, it brought up something painful, but no one could tell from his expression. "That`s unfortunate. . ."

But a confusion and sort of wonder did come back onto his face. "Cell phones?" he said, looking to Farkson. "That is an odd name for the telephone." The inventor had yet to travel into the future, as his technology could not yet support that. But the pile of notes in his notebook suggested that he was hard at work to make it happen.

He couldn`t help but to agree with Emma. "No, they should not. It is foolish to base one`s actions merely on suppositions." But he couldn`t help but to look surprised when Farkson revealed Vaswedes` age. "That`s amazing. . .! What a wealth of knowledge . . . Such a shame that it is corrupted."

"Me three," The paladin replied."He's just odd that way, but it was his actions that set in motion the so called 'prophecies'. I believe you make your own destiny."

He grinned at the inventor."I never thought of it that way; but his view of history was of the Darklings, the other sentient beings; he really cared little for humans."
