Oryn, we've discussed that very topic in my group several times. Space Marines have a sheer weight of numbers on books over the rest of the armies in 40k and within their books just have a sheer overpowering number of playable factions with (x) tweak to make them slightly different.

The problem is that GW has realized that they can make money off of the Space Marines. I saw a figure at one point that they made more money off of SM models than off of the entirety of Fantasy in some financial season, but it was recent.

Money talks... and it says: Speeez marinez!
I'd love to see say starter set with guard force in it... after all it is possible to visit hundred planets and never meet a space marine - while IG is everywhere, at least in the PDF form.

Only IG isn't as user-friendly as marines or orks nor as iconic!

Guard is mostly used as easy opponent filler and as corpse decoration for art. Yes they have appeal and a look to go for them but no they aren't as iconic as a brightly coloured nine-foot tall in the closet homosexual with a rocket spewing machine gun and a bald head that is screaming bloody murder.

Guard is just a bunch of guys with laser guns, nothing special. Marines are super-humans and orks are orks.

I'd much rather like to see a starter set with a viable army list (not some wishy-washy stand in) for proper traitor guard and renegades, none of this "use the guard codex" BS we've been fed over the years. FW has the right idea with IA 5 and 6, it's a shame that nobody accepts them as legal.

Why a starter set, instead of a proper codex?

Starter sets offer great value and everybody is bound to pick up one sooner or later for some of the contents. So, if GW were to crank out a starter set with actual, real traitor guard and not regular guard you'd have the perfect spring board for people to start collecting traitor guard and give GW a perfectly good reason to do a new Lost and the Damned codex.

Using the Guard codex is fine and all but using "count as" rules isn't the same as actually being able to field beastmen, traitor legionnaires or renegades touched by the dark gods.

AAAAGH?

Are you having a seizure?

Right anyway a starter set would be a great way to shoehorn some new product into the throats of people. Black Reach worked wonders for the Orks, both old and new, so technically traitor guard (who MUST be modelled like Vraksian renegades!) would be a great starting point for chaos players. A starter set with two sprues full of simple cultists wouldn't be bad either. Just throw in some Traitor Marines from the Alpha Legion and pit them against Ultras and we've got a proper party.

Not a bad idea, cultists would be a great addition to the Lost and the Damned codex alongside traitor guard, mutants and traitor marines. It could be a starter set not much unlike the others; a few marines pitted against the horde.

Well, you've got contradicting goals here. You want half-way decent lists in the starter box, and you want Guard in them; you need a -lot- of guard for a half-way decent list, so if they were implemented, the box would cost quite a lot.

If we're talking about regular Imperial Guard then remember that the infantry platoon is not mandatory. If we're talking about traitor guard, then imagine them not using the same structure as the regular Imperial Guard.

id recommend marines they're a good army to start off with because they're average sized flexible units that can take a hard hit and get back up again.

I was thinking about going with Grey knights, only because I figured it would be cheaper to start with an army that's not very big, but full of really powerful units, but than I saw the price of Grey night models. 75$ for a group of terminators isn't very cheap >.< I've decided to just go with imperial guard instead, cheaper, and more awesomer.
