Joe experimented with using the Wind to extract the area of river that the fish was in.

As Joe held still to command the wind, the fish blasted Joe in the face with a stream of water.

Joe groaned. "You damn fish! I will fillet you!" Joe ran out into the water, gathering Wind as he moved.

The fish swam a bit upstream of Joe and turned back to him. It spat another stream experimentally.

Joe pushed a hand forward, and the Wind split the water stream down the middle. Joe gave it more juice, and directed the Wind at the fishthing.

The fish twisted around the wind attacks and charged Joe, slamming into him and pinning him under the water.

Shocked, Joe flailed and beat at the fish, then thought of something. He tried wrapping his arms around it, then blasting both of them onto the bank of the river.

The fish twisted and moved them out of the path of Joe's wind blast. He'd been caught by surprise, so he didn't have much air, which was growing problematic.
Then again, this fish was the aquatic equivalent of a wyvern....

<******** it, Joe thought. He brought the Fists into play, slamming them into the creature over and over again. He also gathered his mana together and fired a sort of mana pulse attack at it. At the same time, he called Wind to see if he could get it down to him through the water. In the event that that didn't work, Joe opened his mouth and allowed the air in his lungs to flow out, amped up by his mana, to create a tunnel of air to the surface.

The fish shrugged off the mana pulse and squirmed around the punches. When Joe's tunnel connected, the fish spat water into it.

Jacob liked the fish and it's antics, but this had gone too far. Jacob rushed to Joe and attempted to get the fish off of him and pull him up.

Joe began to expend all of his energy on getting out of the water. He used his mana to propel him in a fashion similar to an octopus. He made for the surface and the bank.

The fish responded by attempting to weigh Joe down with its body.
Considering the fish was about seven feet long, it was working.
