Nicky Bartels

Nicky let his expressions cool for a moment as he stepped back to watch the goings-on...they almost all seemed...well...normal...aside from the obvious, of course. Nicky shook his head, not quite knowing what to make of it all. Though...he did have a strong urge to just pick up his things and hide in his duplex for a while.

He quickly shook off these thoughts...he knew he had to make aquantances quickly with the islanders if he would want any chance of getting off of this rock. But, at the moment, he just sat back and watched.

Victor scowled as he watched Nicky step back and relax, and watching everyone do their thing. Here was the guy that looked ready to kill or at least severely injure Victor with a barbell, just hanging around acting like nothing was wrong. The Lizardman crawled a little bit further from his hiding spot, reaching down into the dirt to pick up a small pebble, and some mud, rolling it up with some leaves into a ball and throws it at Nicky's shoulder, his head visible from the brush he was hiding in.

Nicky was glancing over toward Lucas who had come back from the cafeteria with some delicious looking water when something large and wet hit him in the shoulder, causing him to stumble foreward in surprise. "The hell!?" he called out, quickly turning around to try to see who threw what at him and stained his, until then, prestine white shirt. He gave a quick scan of the area, glaring at the bushes from whence the ball of mud, rock, and leaves came. Then...he saw it...that ******** lizard thing again.

The anger melted away from Nicky's face as he forced a calm over himself. Watch yourself, Nicky...don't want those bastards to get the wrong idea about you...watch it. With a not-so-jovial grin, the ex-wiseguy walked casually over toward Victor's hiding spot. Once within about five feet of Victor, he just fixed the lizard with his deathly-calm stare. In all honesty, Nicky would like nothing better than to put the thing out of everyone's misery with a heavy, blunt object...but this was not the time.

"Did you throw that at me?" he asked softly, but with every bit of threat he could manage to cram into the sentence.

Victor sat up to get closer to the wiseguy, his own eye narrowed as he looked at Nicky "Yeahh, I tosssssed it at you, wanted to gget yourr attention, but don't worrry, thhey ggot a laundrry rroom hherre you ccan usssse, but thhen aggain I ggot plenty of clothhessss I can't wearr anymorre if you want it, but maybe in a two monthhess you migghht not be able to wearr any eitherr."
The lizardman grinned slightly, watching Nicky closely. The guy was intimidating and threatening even, but Victor didn't want the wiseguy to see that.

"I ccouldn't hhelp but overrhearr you talkking to...Ggaiussss about me, sssssomethhingg about apologgizingg?"

Nicky stared down the freak of nature in front of him for a moment, a held-back shudder of disgust wanting to climb its way up his spine. As well as he hid his emotions from the outside world, Victor's jabs did cut deep...disturbing Nicky greatly. All this time, he had kept his own injection in the back of his mind...keeping that creeping sense of unease on the backburner for as long as possible. But here was this lizard freak, drudging up those horrid thoughts again. Just what am I to turn into? When will I sprout claws, or fur, or scales? Christ, just what the ******** is going to happen to me!?

He gave a glance back to where the pegasus and penguin were, all that showed was a slight smirk that broke the dangerous calm around him. "Goddamn, you are a vindictive b*****d, aren't you? But yes, yes I was. I was going to apologize. I felt terrible for how I treated you...once I figured out just what was going on here. But...wouldn'tcha knowit? Some git had to go and soil my favorite shirt. Guess I'm going to have'ta go wash it now." Nicky turned to start walking away...pausing a moment to look back to Victor, "Catch me later'n I'll buy you a beer. S'long as you promise not to throw mud at me."

As he walked back to where he kept his jacket and tie, he silently thanked anything that was watching that Victor was not part monkey...flinging poo is just wrong.

"Twenty two?" Gaius asked with a raised eyebrow to Marshall's response. A teasing grin crossed his face and he elbowed the penguin. "You certainly don't look it!"

He almost missed Nicky heading towards the jungle as Lucas and Ambrose returned with the cooler. There was much rejoicing from the various workers as water was passed out. Gaius, cup in hand, glanced up, just catching the human returning from the jungle area.

"Been enjoying a stroll?" he asked casually, believing the man to have just been needing a breather. The smudge of dirt on his shirt was apparent though. Frowning, Gaius said, "Ooo... sorry your shirt got messed up during work. Well, there's a laundromat over in the village center that'll fix it. And building is dirty work anyways!" He added with a half-smile and a shrug.

Nicky just smirked back at Victor as he strolled away toward his jacket and the rest. "Eh, s'alright I supose," he said while thumbing back toward the way he came, "turns out Victor holds a grudge." A grin lit his face as Nicky tried to show how he didn't think much of it. "But...if there's a laundromat like you say...I'm sure a mud-ball stain'll come out easy enough. Gotta enjoy the clothes on my back while I can, you know?" It seemed odd that he was making light of such a thing...but then again, that was a way quite a few people coped with difficult situations.

"And nah, if I cared that much I wouldn't have come out here...working with my hands helps me relieve some stress," he said with a slight smile.

Victor looked toward Gaius and the others as he then moved himself backwards into the brush, vanishing from view, eventually left, heading back to his duplex. He didn't feel like he had any need to stay any longer... and didn't need to any people to stare or scream at him.

Gaius gave a tentative smile, still unsure about the man or his intents, but he was willing to try to co-exist peacefully as long as Nicky behaved.

After the break, and with some grunt-work and sweat, the islanders managed to get up the other beam of the stage and finish off the stairs. With the flooring complete, all the stage lacked was a curtain of some sort. Otherwise, it was finally complete and ready for use!
