He liked Aeris, but given she's dead, his affection for Tifa must eventually win out.

I think Cloud like Aeris, simply because after she dies he lays her on the waterbed in her final resting place. Anyone could have done that but because he loved her he layed her down.
Also after that point Tifa seems to take the afterburner along with Yuffie, because Cloud can only love Aeris.

As much as I like, scratch that luv ^^, Yuffie, Cloud loved Aeris. Let's quote from the game, shall we?
"My hands are sweaty."
"My mouth is dry."
"I'm numb all over."
This is what he said when Aeris died. And Yuffie is just too wily for moody Cloud to handle. Tifa is more worried for Cloud, which could and is all the time misinterpreted as her loving him, so she doesn't like him that much.

giveherhellfromuspeeves Personally, it was SEPHIROTH....mwahahahahaahaha LOL. I would kind of agree, but I believe he was more in love with Zack than Sephiroth. I mean common... The guy acts the emo-gay love type. He even stole Zack's look and everything. You know it had to be love. blaugh But seriously... I think he was more in love with Aeris. Like most people have stated, I think Cloud and Tifa's relationship was more along the plutonic lines. They're more like family than lovers.

Personally, I'm more of a Cloti 'shipper. I was before I even played the game so things may have turned out different if that weren't the case.
Anyway, I can see the arguments for both Cloti and Clerith. I think he loved (i.e., romantically because clearly he cared deeply for both of them) whichever women the player/viewer wants to believe he loved. It's definitely not as clear-cut as Squall's love for Rinoa or Tidus's love for Yuna, anyway.

Tifa. Aeris was just someone to give him answers, Tifa wasn't a little flake, she could take care of Cloud and he seemed to realise that at the end. The fact that they were friends makes their relationship all that stronger and more plausible.

[x]I definitely think that Cloud liked Aeris in a way that he didn't like Tifa. But he also liked Tifa in a different way to Aeris. He could always count on Tifa for support and encouragement, a perfect example is when he is taken ill with Mako poisoning and she stays by his side throughout the whole thing. With Aeris, however, there was a sense of tension whenever they were alone, and Aeris definitely had feelings for Cloud. His feelings for her only truly came out after her death my view. The person who I feel most sorry for in this whole epic is Tifa. She obviously loved Cloud in a way that he did not love her but nevertheless she stayed by his side offering what she could. Sorry Tifa.[x]

I know it isn't Yuffie. I think Cloud really liked Aeris. ~Spoiler~ When Aeris dies, everytime Cloud is in a tough situation, he thinks about Aeris and gets strength. Advent Children ends with Cloud seeing Aeris for one last time, not Tifa. Also, its the easiest to get a date with Aeris in Gold Saucer. All the evidence shows Cloud really liked Aeris, but turned toward Tifa after Aeris' death.
