just a question:

flutist or flautist?

it's flutist in my opinion since the word flaut means something negative, i remember.

I think it can be used interchangeably

According to this, "flout" (not flaut, as that's not a word) means "to show contempt or scorn;" however, it is also from a Middle English term flouten, which means "to play the flute." Also from an Old French term "flaute," which means "flute."

So it looks like technically, it should be "flautist," which has always been my preference anyway.

...I'm such a dork. xd

Flautist! Of course, I've heard flutist too... anyway, I say flautist because I guess that's how I've always heard it. My first band teacher said, so now I do too!

How many octaves can flutes play, because at my school they play 3 octaves plus a few notes (Low B to the really high D).

I can play from middle C - the C below the stave - to the C two octaves above the stave. I believe that's three octaves. I know that flutes can go even higher, but you need a professional model flute for that, which, sadly, I don't have.

Heh, okie. I feel extremely new. Well... I'm a senior and play the flute in symphonic band. Um... I also play some piano and percussion but prefer the flute above all else since I've been playing it for eight years. Errr... not much to say I guess blaugh I just moved to another school this year. Third band I've played with since I started high school.. Too much moving I guess. All the flutists in my band are snobby. There are some alright ones, but they don't talk to me really cuz I'm just weird to them I guess... That's about it... if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.
