[ insanity, fear x2 ]
The numbers bled against the stone, the water running red, and she was there, disappointed. She was there saying it would be the last time, and that he would never possess any humans of his own. He reached out to touch her with fingers that were covered with flesh, pink and new and fragile. He sat in a huddled pile of cloak and shadow, peeling the flesh away to reveal sinew and then the familiar bone, but the skin regenerated.
You are human, she said, disappointed. You are human.

[[ Sleep Insanity[x2] ]]
He tried to minimize the sips he took from the pools, because clearly they were starting to affect him terribly. The last one had made him feel a little paranoid. He was about to refuse to drink from a new one, when a very dapper little creature that looked like a ball of tar appeared with big googly eyes, and said: You are so pretty, drink from a pool that is also pretty,.
How could Van refuse a pool that asked so sweetly? "You got it, tarbaby. Bottoms up," he said, steeling his sleepy body, words slurred, to drink more from a new pool.
It was not a new pool. He had managed to turn around in a circle, and drink from the exact same pool. He was now a little crazier. The tar baby had become several tar babies.Pool of Insanity - 5 You drink from the pool of Insanity. Every single time you take a sip from the pool, your thoughts become more and more irrational. At first it isn't too bad but the feeling compounds until you are literally talking to people who do not exist in the room, and feel a strange compound of agitation and paranoia. You are easily excited into attacking.

And if someone had come near him he would push them away, because he was afraid and because after taking another sip he found himself aware once more of the desire to hurt, to harm other creeple. And it made him curl up on the floor, made him do anything to avoid having to drink more of this awful water.
But he had to, no matter how painful it was he had to go on because he always had to go on, even when he was afraid, even when he was dangerous, when he was small and pathetic. Because it was all there was.

[ insanity, fear x2, youth ]
In a haze of fear and madness, Lurks wandered to the next room, stumbling and clinging to the walls with his nails. He drank from the pool and grew shorter, and if possible, more capricious. The horns on his head shrunk to rounded nubs, his wings not yet unfurled, trailing down behind him like a cape with every step.
He was here, in the sands, familiar in a way it shouldn't be. Home for the other Horsemen had never been a home to Lurks. The islands felt like a constraining coat that didn't fit, full of customs and rules and regulations between clans. He didn't like them very much at all. The only ones he liked were the Mother and Waits, and Waits didn't believe that she was real. There were a sporadic few other Famine that he saw, but not with any frequency enough to enjoy their company or them his.
He sniffled, once, and more shadow-form tears dripped from his eyes. He could not cry, but wished he could, because he wanted to go home, but there wasn't one. There never had been.

Everything he heard her say sounded like it was happening in a dream. He treated it as such, letting her crawl all over him and pull his shirt up. She was so small, so frail and precious, that his heart warmed just with the sound of her voice. He didn't care that she was about to stab him in the heart with scissors. This was his Mimsy. His Mimsy, just younger, and so much more confused. He could almost bet that if they could ever have children, his little girl would have looked just like this. "Do love you," He mumbled out, still unable to completely awaken even as she pressed the scissors into his chest. Jezebel screamed, just as she did the last time Mimsy had done this. She screamed, and it gave Robert enough consciousness to act on what was happening. The little girl had no chance against him when he reached up, batting her scissors away and pulling her all the way into his giant arms. He hugged her without a single care, holding her so close that she almost disappeared in his embrace. "I've got you, baby." He murmured, murmuring it sleepily into her hair as if she was a teddy bear. "I've got you, don't you worry. I won't let you go. I won't ever let you go. Don't matter who failed to love you in your past, 'cause I love you now, and I'll love you 'till the day we die. I got you, Mimsy." He wasn't going to kiss a little girl, but he was still going to do his best to show her what love truly was, no matter how much he just wanted to go back to sleep.

Quillan entered the room and couldn't help but admire the designs of the palace. He read the sign and decided he would record the effects of the water. After drinking from the first one, he wrote down "yellow pool - nothing yet really".

Zar took another sip in his shaking claws and as the waters took effect, it became apparent that he shouldn't have drunk from any of the pools. He couldn't cope. Just because other creeple could do it didn't mean that he could. The creeping tiredness from the pool mingled with the other effects controlling him and nightmares slowly crept into the world outside. Already afraid of everything to begin with, even the decor seeming awful and strange, it didn't help anything when the world started shifting twisted and bizzare and normal things became unbearable to even look in the direction of. The walls were closing in, nearer and nearer and everyone around him was a threat out to destroy him.
It was with dire urgency he realised that he needed to get out, he needed to escape. His hooves scrabbled on the floor for traction and he stumbled once, twice and then was up and through the door, free from the confines of the awful corridor.
As he exited, the effects bled away, he grew and his wings returned, horns swooping back to their former glory. But once again he stumbled and fell, only this time he didn't bother to rise, simply drew his wings close to him, glad to have them back, glad to have something to hide behind and keep away the world. His hearts hammered in his chest and though the enforced fear was gone, he was still afraid, only now he had no excuse. He didn't shift back into his natural form, he wasn't sure who he had been kidding with that in the first place.

[[ Sleep Fear Insanity[x2] Age ]]
Van, dizzy and still hallucinating, drank from the pool of Age next. It overlapped with his dream-self in a weird way: he was hallucinating, still, but as he drank from the pool of age instead of seeing the small tar creature he saw a mirror image of himself.
It didn't seem to upset him at all.
"It's not that I think you're weak, I just think maybe you shouldn't have had so much to drink; your body can't quite sustain this level of intoxication," Mirror-Van who was actually also Real-Van said, suddenly somehow smarter. He was contemplating the meaning of his dual existence and the effects of the pools on his sanity.
With himself.
"Yes, I suppose that's true. Perhaps it's about time we left," he said, stretching.
Both Vans left.

Pool of Age - 2 Rolling at 2: You drink from the pool of age. Every single time you take a sip from the pool, your (physical and mental) age increases by five years as does your maturity. If coupled with the pool of age, it resets your age and then adds five years to it.

The next pool made him taller. The horns grew razor sharp, his wings grew larger, his flesh sloughed off more to reveal bone and the shadows inside. There was a stillness in him that Lurks had never known in youth, a restrained bright-eyed enthusiasm leashed behind an iron mask.
"Oh," he said, staring at his bone hands, out over the sands and blood-red waters, "I see."
There was power, in control. He could taste it.
Lurks left across a sandbar, toes sinking down, leaving ungodly footprints behind him that filled with wine.

The loss of her scissors was an event so terrible that Mimsy felt like her own heart had just been torn from her chest. Her eyes stung with tears, her throat felt tight, and the sound of daddy's disappointment was already present in her mind, even though he wasn't really here. What was she supposed to do now? If she had any ideas, they were immediately smothered by the strong arms around her, insistently hugging her despite what she had just done. Had she been older, this would have meant something to her. Had she been capable of understanding, this would have been more evidence to support the theory that steadily accrued proof day by day. But she was neither of those things, so when she found herself within this hug, incapable of seeing the love like she was supposed to, all the child could do amid her frustration and failure was burst into tears. "Nooooo," she wailed against him, squirming and kicking and trying her hardest to get free. "Not ever? Pleeeease, I've gotta do this, please! I thought you loved me! I thought you did!" All of her frantic attempts to free herself did little to help her, but she was able to dip her fingers into the pool next to them. Hoping that it would help her grow big and strong, she brought the few droplets of water to her lips...then yawned, her small body relaxing into the warmth of the embrace. "I am vastly sleepy, Mister Morris," she mumbled, exercising her vocabulary. "So...um...maybe if...can we wait for later to--" Another yawn interrupted her, and she was too sleepy to bother to finish her sentence. It really was a nice hug, the kind that she imagined someone might give to someone they loved. More importantly, though, it was a warm, comfortable place to nap, where she could get some rest before returning to science. Quote: You drink from the pool of sleep. Every single time you take a sip from the pool, you fall into a dream-like state where everything seems surreal, much like being drunk. All words get slurred/ hard to say. If coupled with the water from the pool of fear, you enter a strange, crazy, acid-trip nightmare world. Drink: 3/4 Current Effect: Youth + Insanity + Youth + Youth + Insanity + Youth + Youth + Youth (Physical/Mental Age = 7) + Sleep

Effects: 4 Fear 2 Sleep 2 Youth ---
Blue pool, had he drunk from the blue pool? He wasn't sure… he wasn't sure and there were people, voices, what if they were hostile? Hadn't the hunter that was in the house said not all people were friendly? What about the dreams…the dreams with alice… where they scaled him….took his wings. He drank again, right? Yes, he'd just drunk while he was thinking, oh god…what was that sound?
He jerked and looked around drawing half fletched feathers close to him and scratching fingernails at his scales, a terrible nervous habit.

The next pool Quillan drank from was green. After drinking from it, he could feel his body shrinking. He had to dig through his enormous coat pockets just to find his notebook to write down the effects and drew little smileys on the page.

The next pool Quillan encountered was red. He drank a bit of the water in it and grew back to his normal size and kept growing. "So this is what it feels like to hit puberty..." he thought to himself as he jotted down some notes.

The last pool Quillan tasted made his heart pound quickly. He felt like there was something lurking nearby and was going to attack. Luckily, he finished tasting four pools and escaped before anything like that could happen.
