The forest seemed endless, but at least Rainmaker hadn't run into any more talking trees.
"Hello," said a random tree, "have you come for a story?"
So much for that. Well, it wasn't as if she was doing anything else at the moment. "Sure," she replied, her eyes wandering until they found a bright grin and the ghostly outline of a cat, "why not?"
"Excellent," it purred before introducing itself. While Rainmaker didn't doubt its claims that the cheshire cats were everywhere, this was the first one she had come across. Maybe she could convince it to tell her the way out? Maybe if she indulged it a little.
Rainmaker didn't consider herself one for riddles; they were too deliberately deceitful, and she far too straightforward for that. Still, she thought long and hard about all of the possible answers. It couldn't have been an animal, because what animal only had three legs? Tables and chairs and other kinds of furniture were discarded also--they all used all of their legs. Maybe...hm. "A wheelbarrow?" It had three legs that all had uses, yes, but it only really used the wheel part.

Death wasn't quite the answer that Rainmaker had hoped for, and, while it didn't make sense, she wasn't quite sure that she wanted it spelled out.
"Now it's your turn," the cat purred in invitation.
Rainmaker balked; she didn't know very many riddles--certainly not on the nonsensical level that the cheshire cat might appreciate. What if it wouldn't help her out if she didn't come up with a good one? She took a few moments to come up with one that had a much more logical answer. "The more you take, the more you leave behind," she said. "What am I?"
The cheshire cat hummed, its see-through tail twitching as it contemplated the answer. "Days," it guessed.
"Steps," Rainmaker corrected.
Its smile only grew wider as it commended her cunning. Rainmaker was distracted by the box it dropped in front of her only for a second, but that was long enough for the cheshire cat to disappear completely. "Hey, wait!" Rainmaker protested, "How do I get out of here?" She waited a moment for a response, and then another after that, but when it became apparent that none would be forthcoming, she took her loot and left. She'd find her way out eventually. Probably.

Hello, said the tree, effectively startling Natt out of whatever reverie she had found herself in. The ghoul looked up - and up - and up - until she saw something strange: in the space above the tree, something was smiling down at her. How peculiar! The next question made her pause thoughtfully. "I'M HERE FOR---UM." The ghoul drew one long, strange blank.

"What can I hide but always find?" The cat asked, leaving Natt to ponder before shrugging. She had no idea, but she could guess: "My Shadow?"
The cat seemed pleased. "Now, ask me one!"

"Why is an orange like a pear?" Natt wasn't sure if that even was a riddle, but at least it sounded riddle-like, which was honestly enough for her. The Cheshire Cat had a long pause, but ultimately came up short. It seemed delighted though, and disappeared as it mused over it's new riddle, leaving behind a treasure chest.

SCIENCE tilted her head a bit, then a little bit more, and then a little bit more, and then had to pick her hat up off the ground. What was with this tree?
Then it spoke to her, which failed to startle SCIENCE, she'd seen plenty of talking trees and more by now.
"Well met!" she replied, and aimed a punch at the tree. "If you don't want to spar physically, I like riddles. They're like mental sparring matches!"
She then realized the voice was actually coming from a smile. Just a smile. Hovering over a sign. Fascinating.

Then the smile gained a cat. A Cheshire cat, according to the Chesire.
"I'm SCIENCE!" SCIENCE replied, and listened intently to the riddle.
"What can chew you but never swallow?"
"Chew you? Hmmmm."
The little Hatter puzzled over the riddle for a moment, and finally ventured a guess.
"The teeth of a comb?"

Thinking to herself for a moment, she worked out a riddle that would hopefully stump the feline before her. Pulling one up she had heard recently, giving him a little smile as she started;
A natural state, I'm sought by all. Go without me, and you shall fall. You do me when you spend, and use me when you eat to no end.
As she finished, she watched him carefully, hoping it was good enough to confuse him. When he finally answered her, she perked up a little, giggling openly.
"No, dear feline. It's Balance! I believe I have trumped you." She chirped a little, contented by her response, and the gift given to her.

Perhaps he should have paid closer attention to the trees when he had been wandering around the woods. Now he could no longer properly find his way around, or had he ever been able to do so from the beginning? R0GU3 sighed. Had he seen that tree before? What about this rock that he always seemed to ram his boot into? They all looked the same to him now, and when the white rabbit was ready to give up, he looked up to encounter a strange tree.
At first he thought it was the tree that spoke, but then he realized the voice came from the space above it. “Oh,” R0GU3 began as a smile appeared out of thin air. “Yeah, sure,” he answered after a moment of thought. “Throw your best at me.”
The rabbit grinned. “I figured I could.” Another nod to acknowledge the challenge. His eyes flickered to the side as he gave the riddle a moment of thought. “Time.”

Well, she hadn't gotten it right, but SCIENCE shrugged off the failure. Skarks usually didn't have tongues anyway, so she chalked it down to inexperience.
Now the Cheshire wanted her to give it a riddle! SCIENCE grinned, and took a breath.
"How far will a blind Human walk into a swamp?"

“Me? Give out a riddle. Hmmm. Yes, I suppose I could,” the rabbit mused, ears pressed close to his skull. He took another moment to think of a riddle. It took him longer than the cat for he wasn’t used to answering and giving out riddles. Dredging up old memories of riddles was rather difficult, but eventually he managed to call out. “I’m lighter than a feather, but no man can hold me. What am I?”
“A breath,” the cat answers immediately, smiling as always. “A little too easy, don’t you agree?”
He laughed good-naturedly. “Perhaps.”

SCIENCE waited for the Cheshire to guess, and when it finally did, her grin grew even larger.
"It's an even match!" she declared. "I got yours wrong, you got mine wrong!"
The Cheshire's tail curled with pleasure.
"A surprising twist, but I love surprises. You are quite the clever one, and for that, you deserve a small prize. Just this time, of course, just once."
And then a treasure chest appeared in front of her. SCIENCE whooped for joy, collected the treasure, and continued on her merry way.

“Why don’t we try another riddle?” the cat suggested. As soon as it noticed his nod, it launched into another riddle.
It stumped him more than the last, but as he bit his tongue the answer came to him suddenly. “A tongue!”
