Dapper Werewolf

Wardwood Mule
Wandering Rae

You hear a hoarse panting noise above you. An injured hawk rests on a branch, visibly bleeding. It looks as if it's been abandoned by the hunter who owns it, though it seems alert and could probably be rehabilitated given some time and care. But coaxing it down might take a while…

(Oh! Oh! I was not expecting this! So hard to pick. I really want a fox, but I joined the hunt so late in the game. Hawk number 2 looks like he'd go well with Renaud and Glastyn, though, so I'd like to get that hawk if he's available. ^_^ )

Renaud raised his eyes to the sound of snapping twigs, and a gray shadow came stumbling into view. He was only marginally disappointed to see Glastyn finally catch-up. The fawn seemed disoriented as he made his way over to his chosen; clearly he had yet to build a tolerance to Renaud's drinking.

As the man gave the little fellow a friendly pat, he gradually became aware of some unusually heavy breathing. At first, he pressed his nose to Glastyn's and looked the lad in the eye. The deer blinked, his golden gaze not quite focused on any one thing. When Renaud let him go, the fawn fumbled back and landed awkwardly on his rump where he stayed. The man didn't seem to notice, distracted by the continued panting.

Eventually, he found the source of the breathing high up in the fork of a tree. After he set his bottle on the ground, Renaud made several failed attempts to climb up before he finally reached the injured raptor. The bird didn't seem keen on having company, but Renaud was determined.

He fumbled to take his coat off and nearly slipped from his perch as he did. Once off, Renaud threw the jacket over the bird. To sooth it or something. And then he made to scoop it up. This, of course, was not what the bird had in mind.

As soon as he had the bundle in his arms, the hawk began to struggle violently with beak and talong and wing. Renaud's balance was thrown off, and in the process of subduing the raptor, the struggling pair fell out of the tree quite ungracefully.

(Long post, erp. Included just because; I know I can't roll on it. ^_^ )

If Conri had been paying any less attention, he probably would have missed it, but when he bent down, it was clearly a rabbit print. It was not quite the clue he was looking for, but he knew better than many that the unrelated could coalesce into exactly what he was looking for.

Little could be heard after the rabbit's scream died down. Frances took a fairly straightforward path towards the noise, but in the silence she couldn't be sure she was heading the right way. It was entirely possible whatever predator had instigated the sound had moved on.

However, as she walked she caught sight of a faint hair held close to the ground and, feeling assured, she quickened her pace and continued on her way.

"A stag, eh?"

It is the first thing she's said all morning, and her voice crackles with the effort; bringing forth a smile to her weather-roughened face. The flower sways eerily in the breeze, barely brushing it's leaves along the rim of the stag's hollowed eye. The woman reaches forward, plucking the flower carefully from the earth and tucking the brilliant thing into her ear for safe-keeping. Then, she sets to work sawing off the fleshless stag's magnificent horns, stowing them with her arrows before finally rising from her crouch and wiping sweat from her brow.

Time to continue. She thought she might've heard the sounds of a predator not too far away.

The trees in this area of the wood are ancient and dense enough to block out most of the light. The floor is carpeted in a rich coating of moss and fallen leaves, all a deep shade of scarlet. Eventually you become aware of a low whispering sound coming from above you. You look up.

There is something pale and strange in the dark webwork of branches, something moving… you receive the impression of long, crooked fingers like broken twigs, bright eyes that seethe with malice; it is whispering at you…

When you come back to yourself no time seems to have passed at all, but the look of the sky and the numbness of your legs suggest that you have been standing in the same spot, motionless, for several minutes. Something distracted you, but you can't remember what it was.

Elizabeth shook her head to clear her mind. The rabbit was moving around uncomfortably at her side. She looked down and rubbed it's ears to calm it down. Thinking back she could only remember... Something? She didn't know what she could possibly be thinking. Shaking her head again, she set off in a random direction, hoping to find something.

Looking around, she had no idea if she should even be heading this way...

You pause for a moment to get your bearings and cannot resist taking in the breathtaking beauty of the autumnal wood. Even with the weather overcast the vivid scarlets and yellows of the foliage are as rich as dyed velvet against the gray sky and the black trunks of the trees. Gazing into the infinite reaches of the forest is like looking into stained glass…

When you turn back around an enormous fox with a luxurious pelt is standing directly in your path, watching you. Its eyes seem amused, somehow. It quickly dashes off into the undergrowth before you can react — but at least now you have a pretty good idea of where you should be heading.

Soibhan couldn't believe her luck. See, lass? Put yer mind to it and ye can find anything! Excited, she snuck after it, keeping her silence even in her childlike excitement. The fox had been beautiful and somewhat cheeky. She was sure that had been amusement in its gaze. Was it one of those smarter than average animals that the Wardwood seemed to spit out? Rajani had one of the wood's rooks, and he was definitely smarter than the average corvid.

He followed the screams, surety that it was the same fox thief ringing through his blood. McSweeney had not an inkling what to do with the perpetrator once he caught the fox but he would cross that bridge later.

Sheryl's eyes narrowed at the man but just as turned around to say something, he was gone. "Hmph," she grunted under her breath, "I must be seeing things..."

Because she saw a drop of blood in the direction mentioned, she went that way. The thorns and branches pulled at her robe, Sheryl clenched it to her tighter, but she knew it was going to take quite some time to repair and clean. It was all worth it, though, for if someone needed help - well, she wanted to be there.

Kamileunaire

Mist began rising from the damp forest floor not too long ago; now it's all around you, muting the autumn colors behind a ghostly bluish veil. You can still see well enough to stick to the path you've chosen, but as you walk or ride on you begin to catch glimpses of something white showing through the sparse yellow leaves of a buckthorn hedge.

You investigate.

Unfortunately it is only the skeleton of a large stag, stripped of flesh but otherwise almost perfectly intact; time has bleached its bones to the stark paleness that distracted you. A single wild rose has grown up through one of its eye sockets.

You do not win or lose any points this turn.

Amorpheous

You hear the loud pop of a branch breaking deeper in the forest. After a moment of consideration, taking in the dense bluish mist rising from the forest floor, you set off in the sound's direction. It could be nothing, but it's worth investigating… as long as you're careful.

You win two points this turn.

Ryuukishin

You have reached a creek. Its narrow length is lined with rocks and moss, and bright autumn leaves meander downstream, turning languidly in the current. As you draw nearer you notice faint markings in the mud between two rocks: fox prints, almost entirely worn away by time. They aren't recent, but knowing the animal's preferred path is still somewhat useful.

You win one point this turn.

You disturb some leaves, and beneath them you find a perfect fox print pressed into the damp mud. Was the fox trying to hide its tracks? Regardless, this is excellent evidence of a trail.
