He wasn’t sure if he was disappointed their cruise vacation had turned to disaster - it was a mission after all, and those rarely ended nicely. But something about seeing her in action again, weaving, dodging, attacking - it called to him.

Even as his heart fluttered, even as he feared for her safety, he loved the way she fought with every inch of her being.

He twisted, painfully, to face this new threat. His eyes widened in surprise. "Sasha? Sasha, I-"

**** flinched as a large rock glanced off his shoulder. Before he could react, another one hit him in the leg, and he staggered. Sasha was on her knees in the sand, having come within his reach to make her attack.

****. Let me help.

But - And then he understood. The rocks, the spectators - he didn't know how badly Sasha was hurt. What if she defeated him, only to succumb to her wounds? He summoned his weapon, and it came to his call, a gleaming shield settling on his arm. He let out a breath he didn't even know he'd been holding. It felt good, right to have her on his arm again.

It was easy, now that she was on her knees. He held Sally out over her like some sort of strange umbrella, blocking her from the view of the jeering crowds. He glared at them defiantly, and under his breath whispered to the girl at his feet.

"Go home, Sasha. Do this, and you can go home."

She wished she didn't come, but she had begged him, begged him and he caved.
He stood beside her, hands in his pocket as she cradled the delicate creature in her hands. Its breath is weak, tiny chest heaving with each labored breath. There isn't long until it breathes its last, and she closes her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek.

She hated it, how these things were so fragile. Her familiar was different, but in the human world...
It's not moving anymore, and she places it into the little hole her uncle had made. Though she hated dirt, she made an exception, scooping up the substance, placing it over the creature, filling the hole, patting it down with her hands.

Tears were streaming down her face now, and she cried for a long long time.

[ main blessing two]

"Hm, maybe this one," Her Aunt Rose hummed as she held up a black handled broom with bristles so tightly packed together it came to an elegant point like a new paint brush. The older woman hum and twisted her lips and then pulled the tool away to dig in her closet some more.

As many times as ##### had been at her aunt's house (really, more than most relatives knew), she had never been to this part of the house. A room in itself but enchanted to look like the outside. A practice field, some dummies, a few tables and most importantly a shed that Rose was fumbling in, pulling out various brooms and holding them up to her niece. Did her aunt spend her free time making these or was she just a broom collector extraordinaire? The young ghoul didn't care to ask, just stood there in mute silence with her eyes down.

"I think this one will be prefect," her tone was so merry as she sided up to the ghoul, holding out a simple brown broom. It's handle was still notched, bent in a few places like it had once been a branch, its bristles straight and black and the color of straw. It was old fashioned and simple but ##### still looked at it with mild disdain. She never wanted it to have to come to it.

"Oh deerheart, perk up. This'll be fun," her aunt held the broom out to take. "Now, I want you to hold it like this…"

"Those words won't help you protect your demon."

****'s brow furrowed. He glared at the other man silently, unmoving, even as he could feel his foul breath against his face.

"Hollow for you, maybe." He believed. Even after all that had happened, all that he had done, and seen done to others; he believed. In her. In God. He could hold onto this one thing. Often times, his faith was all that was left to him; in the dark hours before dawn.

"What... what are you going to do? M-move on?"

"Haven't-" he began, chopping outward with his shield to try and push this newest adversary back.

"-Thought about it, yet. I guess I've been livin' in the past, yeah? Keepin' to myself. It's nice, talking."

"It's... odd here. You'll make more friends, I'm sure. I've never had so many since coming here..."

"I think... we made a good dent. We should head back."

"Uh...yeah, ok, sure man. Glad I could help a friend." He reached out to slap him on the back. Camaraderie had temporarily chased back his inner demons. He resisted the urge to add, good talk, man.

"We'll just... keep at it. Keep at it and... and the place will be our's."

Thinking of what one wants to do for their future is always a terribly hazy affair, a task required for young ones to consider far before they are honestly ready for. But sometimes things work out, sometimes a test run is available. Such a lucky thing happens to *** and she is given the opportunity to slip into the human world for one night to scare children. They are easy targets, honestly, but everyone has to practice on someone!
*** is beside herself with glee. To get the chance to try out an aspect of Trick or Treat'dom before actually committing? Glorious! And to sneak around in the dark, to be the thing that goes bump in the night is beyond her dreams. Sure, scratching her fingers down the underside of some brat's bed nearly made her scream because of the havoc it wrecked upon her nails, but it was a small price to pay.
At the end of the night she had not one, but two screams under her belt. Two whole screams. And just as many lights turned on, which is an honest accomplishment. That is the highest level of Fear students were allowed to produce in the human world and *** has gotten two!
She is beyond pleased with herself, skipping as she heads down to the Halloween celebration, for she has helped provide Fear for their beautiful world, she has found accomplishment in herself and even her sadness will not weigh her down tonight. She is too proud.

"But okay okay! Can you really sing? I'd love to hear it before we go back!"

At her request, **** grinned again- a big, warm and open smile. Sing? It was such a silly request, but also very sweet. He tried to think of an appropriate song- something light hearted and fun, but his mind kept going back to that movie. The Little Mermaid. Well, why not? He knew all of the songs by heart, as his little sister had given them a Blu-ray copy of the film for Denise's baby shower.

He took in a deep breath, and began to sing, slowly at first because he had to remember the lyrics, but as he went he got more confident, even adopting the ridiculous fake accent of Sebastian. His mind was elsewhere, however, as he sang the cheerful little diddy. A different world. In a well worn armchair, Daniel on his knee, he sang even as the toddler chuckled and clapped his hands, screaming incoherently for more.

"The seaweed is always greener, in somebody else's lake..."

Five steps in, and **** was already just about done. His golem's feet ached with every step, shredded as they were, and he was leaving little muddy footprints as it's insides slowly leaked out to become outsides.

He glanced back at Sasha to complain - and swiftly reconsidered, wisely shutting his mouth.

"This is probably worse than Jenga."

He carefully inspected the tiles around him before choosing one and hobbling over to it.

"Now you're just showing off."

Sucking in nervously, **** took his turn in front of his peers... and sang.

He realized as soon as his started that A.) he had started in FAR too low a key, and B.) that donut had left his throat as dry as the Sahara. Choking through the first verse, he swallowed a few times before clearing his throat, pitching a bit higher and with somewhat better success.

**** wrapped up the second verse, and sat down. His hands were shaking. It struck him how long it'd been since he'd sang anything at all.

It didn't take long for him to be issued a court date. It didn't take the city police long to figure out his family couldn't afford bail. Orange had never really been ****'s color. As he awaited his trial, troubled with both his own safety and that of his family, he was visited by a stranger. A stranger that promised him the power to fight back. To save himself. To protect his son.

It even came with a uniform, quite a bit smarter looking than his usual get up. But that bit didn't interest him.

The monsters were real.

The paper, the meek, almost obsessive way he'd arranged the flowers..."You jus' keep pushin'," **** finally rumbled. He squeezed Sasha's hand again. "You jus' can't help yourself, can you? Jerry, you need help."

He shook his head. "I can't give it to you. Please go. You've done enough."

"Please, no. ****, make him go, I can't. I can't."

**** waited a few seconds, tense - but the other man did not return.

"He's gone." He sighed, slipping his hand from hers and using her drug induced delirium to steal a chance to muss her hair a bit. With this distraction, he used his other hand to grab the cup of flowers and toss them into the trash.

After a considering moment, the note followed. Biohazard, the bin read. Appropriate.

Nothing on that sheet could possibly be less than toxic.

[ main blessing three]

Well, perhaps she didn't have to get more books. ##### stared down at her phone, hearing a familiar jingle as Andrew had alerting to the missing word that would help in this odd little quest.

Seeing the word enchantment was such a welcoming sight. There could be many negative connotations attached to such a word but there wasn't anything blatantly horrible like what she had dreaded earlier. With her stack of books already on the table, perhaps she could be able to find something among the masses.

##### pulled out a chair, all set and ready to read when the smell of, well, fire and smoke caught her attention. She was still only halfway seated when her head snapped up and her eyes wide. Her mouth fell open in horror and let out a staggered breath at what she was seeing. Tears swelled in her eyes. Her fingers curled. The... the book. "WH-WHAT ARE YOU D-DOING?!" She screeched. There might be the familiar stuttering, but if there was anything to set the little witch off... it would be the destruction of books.

She said to be safe. Was this safe?

Maybe not.

But if he said no... Well, he had some pride. Besides, they'd worked together before, albeit in the spirit of Christmas. "Can't say no to such a kind offer, sir."

Rep was a flurry of movement, and the less experienced **** couldn't keep up. The other hunter landed blow after blow, until he felt the snap of his fear shield and suddenly the damage was real and painful. A pound of flesh.

The next thing he knew he was pinned to the ground.

You lose.

"So very human~"

The pressure hurt, more than he believed possible, and he wheezed in a few strained breaths.

"I ain't never claimed," he coughed wetly, "t'be anythin' else."

"Brother, slow down!"

--- was panting, leaning against a tree.

"Use your wings, dummy! You were born with them for a reason."
"I'm still not that good at-"

It was no use. He was too far, and couldn't hear her anymore.
True, she was born with wings, ALL of them were, but it didn't mean she always used them. To be honest, flying was a little scary, and she preferred using her hands more than her wings.

Taking a deep breath, she let feathers cover her arms again, and flapped them, testing her strength. Would she be able to make it to the next tree? She didn't know.

There was only one way to find out.
Closing her eyes, she jumped.
