With the lull in the eggs cracking, Veyes stretched out his toes through the hot sands and surveyed the last of the eggs; hoping that even a small bit of luck might bring one of the hatchlings his way. He let his mind wander over the smallest egg to the largest that were still waiting to crack. These eggs had a bit more patience and maybe they were still deciding who to take on as their own.

He put his mind through all the preparations he had done well in advance of even getting a dragon. It was his hope not to let the little guy...or girl down if he were to impress. At times his imagination had led him astray of focus but with the thought of a possible life mate and his mentor's help to keep him focused he sincerely thought that he was ready to take on the responsibility that would last the rest of his life. All he could do was keep his chin up and wait. When the right moment came, he would be ready and his future dragon would not be disappointed.

In his distracting thoughts, he didn't notice Ren's arrival until the hand touched his arm. Glancing over, he caught the other boys face and smiled when he recognition hit. "Hey Ren." he whispered, "Glad you made it. I was worried you wouldn't." He paused for a moment then said very quietly, "Some of these dragons have mauled candidates so be on your toes if one heads our direction." In Veyes perspective, he'd rather get mauled than it happen to Ren. Adding another scar to the ones he sported wasn't going to make much difference. But Ren was a lot softer in his own mind...he didn't need an injury like that. Well, no one did but...still Ren was a friend.

Looking back towards the eggs, he realized that there were several smaller eggs. The smaller ones were going to to be a lot more agile so he had to be very alert when they started cracking. Hopefully, they would crack one by one so he could keep focus easier but when did he ever get that lucky?

Jaidev felt a smile finally cracking the tense frown he'd been wearing most of the hatching. That bronze...he was certainly a character, the boy decided as he watched the dragonet lounge by the girls. He had been puzzled at first when the bronze started toddling towards the girl's side (he was sure it was bronze and not a wayward brown!) but as a boy began to edge over slowly, things started to make sense. It seemed the little hatchling just liked the attention of the fairer gender! Ah, such personality the little dragon had (granted the queen and that brown had personality in excess as well but Jai found he much liked this personality a bit better. Less bodily harm and all)!

Next, the clumsy blue seemed to Impress. And the best part- both happened without incident- maybe the storm was breaking. Maybe anyone who had any future thoughts of sneaking and touching eggs prematurely would be severely deterred by this incident. It was too much of a coincidence to have this many maulings on a Hatching without a Touching- seems visiting the eggs before they cracked did matter.

After the Impressions, a lull fell over the sands. It was almost nice just to have a break in the chaos and excitement, though as the stillness carried, the boy felt tension rising again. He hoped all this silence was simply because the young ones were taking their time with Hatching out. It would be so unfortunate if some of the eggs failed to hatch because of the sheer stupidity of one wherry-brained Candidate...

Since Merik- M'rik?- had impressed, little seemed to happen. Minutes dripped by, slowly, and though an egg or two appeared to twitch from time to time, nothing of real interest occurred. Zafir found, since he'd first heard the hum of hatching beginning, that his heart was slowing, and his muscles were relaxing. Waiting might be the hard part for his mind, but his body was suddenly grateful for the respite.

For the first time, the young man realized just how tightly knotted his stomach was. No doubt, a sudden jolt would have him losing what little he'd eaten since midday. Silently, he let his knees drop to the sand, and simply settled into the grains. The heat was soothing, and it would be nice, for a bit. At least until it got too itchy, or began to burn.

Zafir turned his head, to look around, and wondered where Raedue had disappeared to, in all the commotion. As far as flirtatious lake-dunkers went, the other was good company. A touch of conversation, something to take his mind off where he was and what he was not doing- watching eggs hatch and impress, namely- would be nice.

If only he'd actually bothered to get to know more than two people in the entire Weyr, that might have been an easier task.

Tideal watched Rumir fidget out of the corner of his eye without taking his gaze away from the collective of differently hued shells. Mixed emotions ran through his head, and he waited impatiently for another egg to hatch and distract the badly worded candidate from talking to him. Wasn't the nicest idea, but he wasn't in the best of moods either.

"Tideal," He said to the older boy, again not turning away from the dragons. The tried to lighten up his mood a bit. No way he'd impress standing around seething and acting like a snob. "Its a pleasure, I suppose." Tideal added with less ire. As he looked around the air seemed to make a choking noise. As was the flow of the hatching, when the eggs paused so then did the candidates. The silence seemed to seep from heart to heart, amplifying the anxiety and anticipation of those standing on the grounds or watching from the stands. Quiet though it was, a few other conversations were still carried out. A small murmur among silence so unique the splitting of a shell would be the only thing capable of breaking it.

Oh! N'tos spotted Jessan, and J'riar out there. Unfortunately, N'tos only spotted them in the after math of the blue's slash towards his previous roommate. And then there was that business with that bronze.. N'tos had raised an eyebrow and asked, although he knew the answer, "Can bronzes be impressed by a female?". Asceth's told him, with some amusement, that it had impressed a male.. but it's preference laid with the females. N'tos had broke into laughter, thinking that that rider had his work cut out for him, indeed!

It took a bit of time to reach J'riar and Ianquith with the brown following after him. "Yo!" N'tos made his way over to them, one hand resting on J'riar's shoulder. It was quiet in the hatchings now, and no more maulings to say the least. The candidates, and audience were all pretty much waiting for the next couple of eggs to hatch, while those that did hatch were being fed. It allows for some quiet time, now that there wasn't so much tension in the air.

"Asceth was pretty worried in the beginning. How did you and Ianquith fare?" People are getting hurt.. do not be relaxed so much, Mines. While Asceth didn't look perturbed, he was mildly worried. "Aw, come on. We have healers on site, and they're all pretty much taken care of by now." N'tos tried to soothe all worried parties. "Now is there anyone we know that's been lucky? I can't say I know all of these new weyrlings." That was refreshing, not being known as the newest weyrlings! That title was reserved for the lucky candidates that had scored in the new hatching.

Now that Merik.... whoops.... M'rik was off feeding his dragon, he looked around for the one other boy he knew. Wait? Where was Zafir? After several moments of looking he found him. Huh. That was odd. How had he gotten so far away from the other boy? He shrugged, and made his way back over to him. He nudged him in the shoulder. "Hey. Pretty impressive for our friend, eh? But there's still..... eight eggs it looks like. Still hope for us to impress one of our own."

Zafir craned his neck up as he caught Raedue's voice. "Ah! So you've found me then. I wondered where you'd run off to. It is wonderful for him, isn't it? Not three full minutes from me telling him not to worry, too." He gave a soft laugh. "Perhaps I have a talent for blessing Impressioners-to-be?"

The sand was making his bare legs itch, now, but Zafir was more than pleased enough on the ground for a little while longer. All that tenseness was a little tiring, and mixed with the labor of being a candidate and his recent trouble sleeping, thanks to nerves and a new environment, he couldn't say he was surprised. "Eight isn't many though, not with dozens of candidates milling around. Care to take a seat, until the madness begins again, then? Hot sands might be a bane during the day, but I can't say I can complain to loudly in the dark!"

‘Late! Late! …
And sweaty, ick…
Rom is not going to be pleased.
Late! Wonder how many I missed…’
Strong legs put on more speed as he raced though the weyr to the stands, bellowing out an apology as he surged between a pair of bystanders. Surged not pushed, surging involved little quick steps and some intuition of how the person was going to move. Such he could cut though a crowd and just barely brush someone in passing. Not really rude but still better not step on anyone’s metaphorical feet.

‘Where, wherewherewhere…ahh ha! Score!...
maybe, if she doesn’t kill me first.’ He ran a hand though his now rather short cropped hair. Well, short for him at least, and grinned sheepishly at his glaring cousin. “…What I miss?”

Anyone not familiar with his cousin probably would think her as anti-social. Rom never talked much and when she did it was often blunt and rather harsh. Her face was smooth as always, but her eyes where giving him the low grade flare glare number eighteen. Otherwise know as ‘Where the hell have you been!’ She shook her head, looking back at the stands as he took his seat.

“Three very angry hatchlings, a brown, gold, and blue in order mauled some of the candidates.” Ramaha said calmly pulling a water skin and strip of stain cloth from her bag passing them over. “A protective little blue and a green, then a clumsy little blue and a flirting bronze who decided he would rather nest among the woman then go to his candidate.”

‘Rish shook his head, toweling himself dried before taking a deep drink of the skin. Knowing his cuz there was most likely some sort of food inside that bag. He grinned, looking at Rom. “Nothing at all wrong with that. The ladies are all lovely.” His eyes flickered to the bag and he beamed wider as he was presented with what looked to be a bread pocket filled with meat and edible greens. ‘Yum…ooh no.’

He paused recognizing the young man on the sands with the wounded arm. ‘Jessan was mauled. Looks shallow…’ He took a bite, looking over the remaining eggs. ‘At least I didn’t miss them all.’

Raedue laughed. "Well, in that case, maybe you should be telling me not to worry. I certainly wouldn't mind a little luck any way I can get it. And I agree. The sand does feel quite good once the sun has gone down and things start to get chilly." He suited actions to words and settled down beside his friend, stretching his legs out. "So what color do you think is going to hatch next?"

Zafir eyed the eggs he could see, and took a guess, as random as he could make it. He pointed towards the Sorraia Mustang. "Another brown, to make up for my missing the first one, even if he was a violent, angry little beast." There was a hint of longing in his voice. When he'd been young, just like all little boys, bronzes had been king in his eyes. But, older now, and more aware of how he reacted when thrown into a leadership role, he liked the browns best. Big, powerful, hard to tire, and sometimes just as strong as their metallic brothers, but without all the problems that came with responsibility.

"And, just in case," he added, turning his eyes back to Raedue, and throwing in a wink, he repeated his earlier sentiments to M'rik, "You'll probably impress, and even if you don't, I'll make you some fine new clothes, and we'll behave like celebrating madmen anyway." Zafir paused, examining his friends hair and skin tone, and after a few silent seconds, added, "With that color hair, I'll see if I can't find some of the orange Ista dyed cloth that everyone is always raving about. It'd probably suit you."

Mine, here comes Asceth and His... Ianquith ventured quietly, her mood still a little dour from the violence she'd seen. Hello, Asceth... She had always liked the Brown, liked how patient and gentle he was. Before now, she'd been a little too shy to approach him, but she wasn't feeling very shy at all for the moment.

"N'tos!" J'riar called out with a wave, grinning tiredly at his friend. "Mm, she's still a little shaken up, I'm afraid, but she's much better." He scratched at the dragonet's eyelids as though to keep her quiet mood up, wishing she was in a happier state. Unfortunately, it didn't work. But it was all right, she'd perked slightly at the sight of her brother, clearly grateful to see someone she recognized.

This has been frightening. She confided quietly to the brown, her eyes an unhappy yellow that swirled slowly about.

Raedue looked over the remaining eggs as well. "A brown is a definite possibility. Though I think maybe a green as well, seeing as how we have only had one of that color hatch as well." He was tempted to lay back in the sand, depsite the risk of getting it in uncomfortable places, but decided against it. It *had* been a long day, after all.

"Well, I hope you're right about me impressing. And I know you're right about what'll happen if we don't impress. Because there will me more mating flights, and there will certainly be more dragons. And there are always parties to be had." He thought about the color recommendation. "Orange, huh? I suppose so. Never done much else but regular running leathers and clothes. We usually do those in browns and blacks, dark colors. Though I can certainly see about making us a pair of sandals that we can use on the hatching grounds nex clutch. Ones that won't make us all but burn our feet off."

The lull had been long. The crowd had begun to mutter among themselves, speculating about which egg might hatch next, what color it might hold and what the dragon might be like. Another angry little beast? They could only hope it was like the later dragons, quieter and better natured. They were still talking about the flirty bronze and his bumbling blue brother; that pair had been rather adorable, even if a young woman had touched a dragon who didn't belong to her.

The speculation finally ended when the Shetland Pony Egg began to shake. A few people smiled, other shook their heads. F'sey was disapponted he wasn't in the stands making a few marks off of it, but he had weyrlings to watch and keep from overfeeding baby dragons. The small egg wasn't doing much, but perhaps the small dragon inside couldn't do much. Or perhaps the dragon inside was not quite as small and was quite cramped. The crowd murmured and leaned forward, watching as the egg began to crack.

Shifting from foot to foot, the sands unbearably hot and scalding, Darcir found his anxiety growing with every passing moment. After M'rik had left with his bumbling blue, there was a great lull. . . . He tried to remember how many eggs might be left, but it was difficult to see amongst the shards and sea of white-robes.

Heaving a few breaths, the lad hid his shaking hands by reaching up to toy with some of his long hair. His brow was laced with sweat and he glanced from the various faces of candidates. He was pointedly ignoring the stands, not wanting to locate his family or know that they watched and waited. Faranth only knew what they were thinking. . . one bronze had already paired off with his now ex-roomate, Balin. . or B'lin or B'al or whatever he might shorten his name to. Funny how he'd never make bronze material, nor would he ever desire to. His closeted secret alone would make him brown rider material at best, but even then, browns were a handful and few and far between. Blue or green were it. . . and there was probability (if he Impressed at all) it would be a green.

Not that he minded. Not at all! He begrudged no dragons colour and the one green he had met a few days previous had been nothing but charming. His own Liu was also a sweet heart. . . But exactly what might his parents feel if such were the case?

No, no no. . . no time to think about that. Biting his lower lip, the man tried to clear his thoughts while he had a moment. Before the chaos and fear resume. Deep down, Darcir did want to Impress. He had been at Ista long enough to see that it wasn't just idle days and laziness; there was much work to be done and he could thrive in such an environment. To have freedom on one of the great mounts of Pern, to have a bondmate unlike anything. . .

Impression still confused him, still made him wonder at the effect. All a dragon was was a voice in your head, wasn't it? Or . . . something like that. People tried to discuss Impression during lessons, but each story was different, each interpretation solely personal. . .

What would it be like to find a missing piece?

Love. Happiness. Good thoughts. Positive thoughts. Be open to the dragons, be welcoming, be . . . himself. Open and welcoming weren't his strong points, but he wasn't rude. He could be polite, hell, he could even lay on charm when push came to shove but how might one charm and egg?

Oh bother. . . .

Thinking loudly, he did his best to think. Maybe that egg over there . . . The one he could almost see amongst the other vying candidates. Won't you come out. . .? See the world? See everything you may miss locked inside such a shell. . . ?

Darcir felt a bit foolish thinking so clearly but . . . .no one had to know. Not a one. These were his thoughts and his alone and not one of his peers or the scrutinizing gaze of riders and hold folk around them could penetrate such a thing. These thoughts were for the eggs and eggs alone. . . and if he focused on being as hospital as he could, perhaps (who knew) he might draw one to his side.

It's a very big world. There are many lazy folk but . . . there are also some good ones besides. There's work to be done, and we can't do it without each and every one of you. . . As an after thought, he did think, There's also food. Fresh meat to help you grow, and candidates to choose from, candidates all your very own. Perhaps we need you more than you need us. . . but we're here, waiting. Come out, come out.

Thankfully, any flush at thinking so loud was hidden by the heat of the sands. Why did they have to be barefoot? Not only was there scalding sand terrorizing the soles of his feet, but egg shards and littered shell pieces were hazardous to step in if one weren't careful.

Ollen watched the shaking egg with interest, her bets were on this one was a green like most of the Weyr. It was so small, how could a brown or blue fit into the egg? She chuckled and watched with interest hearing mummurs from a few of the other candidates that they thought it was also a green.

Feeling a little more at ease because of the nicer dragons, especially the flirty little bronze that had sat near the girls. Wriggling her toes in the hot sand Ollen peered over another girls head at the shaking egg.
