"She was one of a team David, she did it because it was a challenge, I talked to her for a while about it, she finally admitted to me what I had previously suspected" Joliette watched him, she wasn't sure that she wanted to get in the way, not with how upset David could potentially get... She rubbed her shoulder and waited to see if he would leave or stay.

Chubbs stopped just outside the door, he believed Joliette, of course he would believe her. One of the one's responsible for his change, apart from Sabin was just a few duplexes away, right where he could get to her. He wanted to go there and yell at her, to show her up close what she had tone. He wanted to ask her why and then make her pay for ruining him, he wanted to make them all pay.
" What the hell is she doing here then?"

"I presume she did something Moreau didn't like, because she's trapped here and changing just like the rest of us" Joliette says and climbs from the bed following after him but stopping in the doorway. She looked up at him, her tongue flicked and she knew he was upset.

Serves her right, getting a taste of her own medicine, the whole staff should. Sabin deserved it more than others, Chubbs knew if the island broke down, he'd hunt Sabin and inject him with everything he could find. Lily, he was pissed that he'd helped her and she had to of known.
" I have to see her for myself, she should see what she's done"
Chubbs looked back at Joliette with and upset face but saddened eyes and began shuffling towards Lily's duplex.

Joliette sighs "All right David, I won't stand in your way, I'll wait for you here" she says and steps back inside the duplex

Chubbs stopped hearing the sigh and hung his head. He really felt ashamed righ then, willing to go blast at someone. If it had been Sabin, he thought it would be different. He turned and walked back to Joliette and quickly wrapped his arms around her. She was the one thing that kept him sane in this place and he didn't want to lose that. Hugging her tightly, he rubbed his cheek against the top of her head.
" I'll go see her tomorrow"

Joliette leans her head against him and wrap s her arms around as much of him as they'd reach "Sounds like a plan, she seemed rather stressed when she first found me in the darkroom, I have a feeling her reception from everyone wont be great when others find out" she says not knowing others already had in fact found out

Chubbs turned her to her sider so he could scoop her up in his arms, he then carried her from the doorway and and shut it with a kick of his foot, he tried to forget everything and enjoy his time with Joliette. He knew his reactions weren't always his choice now, he beast was fierce and full of anger and hated it bottled up. Chubbs knew that he had to go yell at Lily, if he didn't, he'd snap again and who knows who he might hurt. Chubbs flopped on the bed, shifting his tail to bare his weight and cuddled Joliette on top of him.

She laughed being scooped up, and smiles "You are a big teddy bear" she said with a giggle cuddling against him as he held her in his lap. She was glad that the beasts' rage was not directed at her this time, the slowly fading bruise on her upper arm and shoulder testified enough to that

" Me a teddy bear? aww nah... not me!"
He grinned and gave her a big hug tightly to him, she felt nice to cuddle so close. He smirked and gave her backside a soft squeeze and kissed her lips and winked at her lightly.
" Like to see a teddy bear do that"

She giggled feeling squeeze and returned his kiss. "Don't matter, you are still my teddy bear, no matter what" she tips her head into another kiss holding it happily glad to have distracted him from the previous topic. She had already witnessed the combo's anger, she was a bit nervous for the redheaded woman

Cuts like a knife Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs had decided to wait to see Lily, he was thinking about what he was going to ask, things he needed to know before he got too pissed and broke her nose. So to give himself a better day, he shuffled his way towards Awens duplex. It had been a while seen he had seen his good friend, he wanted to know if she was fine. Heading up to her door, Chubbs was hoping she was a lot better and curled his claws up into his fist. He gave Awens door a melody tapping and stood back to wait to see if she was home. Awen Zyn Usually Awen would just call for the person at the door to come in, but decided to start being a bit more hospitable again. She stood up in her tank-bed and paused her game. She stretched a bit before walking towards the door, leaving wet flipper marks in the carpet. By now Awen stopped caring and just let the water seep in.
Glancing quickly out the peep hole, incase Billy was outside her door. A grin came to her face and opened the door. "Hey! Chubbs!" Instantly she jumped into the big man's arms not pausing at the fact he changed since she saw him last and wasn't dazed out. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs was caught off guard by the glomping manta girl, he stumbled backwards a bit but soon regained his balance. He chuckled and blushed, no one he'd known apart from Joliette, was that excited to see him, Joliette had her reasons though. Chubbs wrapped his arms around Awen, hiding his claws in his hands and picked her up in a big ol hug. Chuckling he spun her around some, he liked doing that, he hoped it would make Awen giggle how he liked to hear. She looked well and he was happy, she had him worried down at the beach. " Well never seen someone so excited to see lil ol me before" Awen Zyn "Well I hadn't seen you in ages! It's like ya disappeared on me." She laughed and waved him into the duplex when she was set down. "Come in, come in!"
She moved aside to let him in. Awen's duplex has become more personalized in hte passed few weeks, starting with the bed tank. Flowers rested on the table now because Awen thought they were getting a little too much sun. The xbox 360 was now hooked up and everything was set just the comfortable way Awen liked it. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs wiped his feet at the door and then looked down at himself, the front of him wearing a giant wet patch where Awen just was. He chuckled lightly and shuffled inside with his tail wiggling from side to side. He already was getting use to the feeling of having his shorts and pants hang just under his tail. " I'm sorry hun, just been getting use to the change and things" He got inside and looked around, Awen had a good set up here, a lot better than his place. Chubbs wished he had a t.v. or something to keep him entertained, but he knew it'd be smashed if the staff pissed him off. He checked out the tank and guessed Awen needed that now, he was glad the staff weren't complete pricks. " I came to check if ya were okay, me and Joliette found ya down at the beach that day" Awen Zyn "Don't worry about it Chubbsie. I'm just glad to see you." She paused a second and turned back to Chubbs. "And thanks...for your help at the beach. It's all a bit hazy...but thanks for..everything."
Blinking she looked at a Awen-shaped water stain on his shirt. "And er sorry bout.."
Grinning she looked up again. "And you know I told you you'd be a big ol' teddy bear when ya changed more. It's cute."
She was all over the board at the moment and she knew it, but she just was glad to see her old friend. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs grinned, he couldn't help it. Awen looked really well and happy and well it was infectious. Chubbs heard the thank you and couldn't resist to joke around. He pulled a muscle man pose and grinned. " T'weren't nuttin ma'am, all in a days work for Chubbs beach patrol!" He chuckled and smiled at he joke, then more came rolling out. " And to think, I was really close to giving ya mouth to mouth, or was it maw to gill? damn" He mocked his disappointment and grinned, he kept forgetting his teeth though, he sawhimself in the mirror when he grinned, it looked like th disney's beast trying to smile. He looked down at his shirt when Awen mentioned his wet patch and smiled and shook his head. He was about to say it was alright when Awen made him blush with the teddy bear comment and his ears and nose grew tinges of red. " Aww hey, no fair, just for that you get another bear hug " He grabbed at her and picked her up in a big hug Awen Zyn Giggling Awen wrapped her arms back around the big and and squeezed as tight as she could. It just so happened that Awen liked Disney's Beast and thought Chubbs had a right handsome smile.
"I reallly missed you ya know. I've barely seen ya since the lights came on...." She gave him another squeeze and then looked around. "Hey uh, want something to eat drink? I keep a store of junk food around lately..." Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs couldn't help it and blushed again, there were two people in this world that made him feel special now, Awen and Joliette. Awen was great, he wished he had met her a long time ago he might have had more esteem than he did. " Awww geez, make me blush, heh , I'm sorry, I kinda had a bad time after the places opened back up. I wasn't doing to well and kinda took some lone time. Then the change happened and well been bit rough, it's starting to scare me." Chubbs realised he was putting a down on the mood, he hated that and quickly changed the subject. " If ya got anything meaty, that'd be good, or umm anything will do, been eating alot lately, been really hungry." He smiled and ruffled the top of her head then went over to admire her tank. Awen Zyn Awen Nodded along with him listening until he finally perked up his tone and ruffeld her hair. "Hm.. I might have some..beef jerky or something..." She mumbled and turned to a drawer and she started sifting through the junk food that was stored there. She had upgraded since the time she kept it in her nightstand. After the night with Lauren Awen figured that there might be some more of that kind of thing happening so she should stock up.
But finally she found hte pack of beef jerky she promised and wandered over ot hte tank with it. She smiled and handed it to him. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs grinned seeing the jerky and nodded in thanks, he tore a piece in half in his mouth and found it surprisingly easy to chew for jerky. He chewed away and leaned down near the bottom of the tank and breathed hot breath on the glass. When it fogged up, he wrote " Beware: Kick a** manta girl ", and chuckled lightly. He really wanted to ask Awen what had happened out at the beach, what exactly had happened to her. But she seemed so damn happy, Chubbs didn't want to bring it up to ruin it. " MMM meaty, thanks hun. So what ya been up to then hey? part from gettin me all wet.... wait... that sounded wrong" He chuckled and blushed. Awen Zyn Awen grinned as Chubbs wrote in fog on her tank. That looked pretty cool actually... maybe Awen should take a permanent marker to the side of it. She shook her head dismissing the thought.
Another laugh pushed it's way to the surface when Chubbs made a fumble with the last bit of his sentance. She gave him a look but ignored the stumble as she waved her hand idley. "Ah not too much...." She moved to the table and sat down, pushing a chair out for Chubbs. "Just you know hanging out with Lauren... meeting some people I hadn't before..." She would just stay away from the Billy incedent. "Swimming.... chatting with Sabin....oh playing my new xbox 360 isn't it kick a**?" She grinned. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs shuffled over and turned the chair round backwards to sit on, for his tails sake and for something to lean on. He smiled and listend to what Awen had gotten up to since he saw her last. He smiled and raised an eyebrow and then smirked at the mention of Lauren. " Ya like buddies now?, that's cool, umm next time ya see her, ask her for my pants?, I kinda need em" Then when the mention of Sabin came along, Chubbs just blinked, and stared for a moment, not really focusing on her xbox. She'd been talking to the guy? what the heck for? " Sabin?! wait, Sabin,... the staff guy? not like chit chat talk right?" Had she not heard about him and his s**t he'd do to people, if Awen was that naive she was about to get a rude awakening. Awen Zyn Awen was about to laugh and return a comment about Lauren and Chubbs' shorts but paled when she heard him say Sabin's name. Crap she hadn't mentioned it had she? Retracing her words she tried to remember if she had or not...she couldn't quite remember but she obviously had.
"Uh..er...well nooo nooo." She laughed a littler nervously. "Of course not! Gave him a rather good tongue lashing for what happened to Jamal!" She nodded, at least that much was true. And she wasn't exactly lying...she wouldn't call what they were talking about chit chat. "Asked some questions and things about the research. Seeing what the point to all this was...ordered some things... just ..business."
She glanced briefly to the flowers then to the table. Of course, what was she expecting... even if anything she had been thinking with Sabin were possible on his end. They would never be accepted. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs just looked up at Awen, all he was thinking was that her ranks in bluff were really crap. He looked a little disappointed, it was obvious she was having some probable healthy conversations with the p***k. Sabin was the one thing he hated most on the island, even more than his friends suffering, and that made him sick at times. Chubbs sighed, he sighed like his dad did years agao when you knew he was upset and was trying not to go ballistic. He reached over and patted his hand on Awens. " I'm not gonna upset at you for who you choose to be a friend, I just.... I'm concerned. He's done things... I'm not gonna exxplain... but I just know if I meet him in person.. the Chubbs you know will be replaced by something horrible and it will be after him" He took her hand in his, he was worried for the girl. He was trying to be gentle about it. If he had bad mouthed Sabin, she would have probably deffended him, and that's not what he wanted. He petted her hand and smiled. " Just be careful okay, for me?..... oh and umm what's this thing you were showing me?" Awen Zyn Awen just slumped into her chair. "Just my xbox..." She mumbled and kept her eyes away. She knew those types of sighes. When her grandfather was alive he gave those kinds of sighes all the time. "I know what kinda stuff people've said he's done." She said softly. "But no one thought very much of Jamal at first either, and now people think he's a pretty decent guy."
She took her hand away from Chubbs' and moved to trace along a pedal of the flowers. "He has a streak of practicle jokes, but he doesn't mean anything by them... he just has a funny sense of humour like that and he's just strong in his beliefs on things. But he isn't as bad as people think. I doubt anyone who speaks ill of him has even tried to talk to him. He was really nice at the Halloween party and he was the only one there for me when Billy bloody well tried to kill me!" The heat was rising and Awen could feel it up to her ears. She stood up and moved to the window away from Chubbs. "No one else. Not Jamal, not Lauren, not you..." She tightened her fist on the sill and frowned. "But of course that never matters does it.... The good things never matter in people." Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs felt like he had just been stabbed in the heart, and it sank deep into his chest. He was hurt, he didn't know what to do. He wanted to yell at her, to say he didn't have hundreds of cameras and a button he could push. He wanted to say how bad these jokes of Sabin were, and how they made Joliette break down and cry, but he didn't. The worst part was he didn't see it coming, not from Awen and Chubbs looked to the floor. He didn't need to hear it, for Chubbs, feeling usless was more horrible than the island and the transformations. Now is friend said that he can't protect her, and the man he hated most of all could. Chubbs couldn't breathe and he stood up. He tried to swallow but he couldn't and went for the door. He tried to hold back the tears as he opened the door. " Sorry" That's all he said as he left the duples and walked away. Awen Zyn She had expected him to come back heatedly. Awen thought Chubbs was going to rebuke her somehow for what she said. Gripping the window sill fire in her chest right now she didn't care. No one ever except her choices, first Lauren with Jamal and now Chubbs with Sabin. She knew he had faults but she could deal with these and maybe help them a little bit. She was ready to stand up for that choice this time.
But as the silence stretched Awen's determination began to waver. She could feel the tension in the air..but it wasn't the kind she had been expecting. She could hear her heart beating she could hear every breath....time felt like it stretched on and on. She heard the chair pull back and finally she turned around.
Her eyes went wide seeing the look on Chubbs' face. It was something she had never seen on him before. Realising all too late how her words must have sounded Awen sat dumbly in her own regret.
He moved to the door and she took a hesitant step. Chubbs spoke a single word.... one word and Awen had no idea one word could hurt so much. She held up her hand and started moving forward again.
"Wait Chubbs I didn't mea-"
But it was too late. the big man had shut the door cutting her off. That click sounded like the bang of a gunshot to Awen's ears feeling a bullet pass right through her heart.
"-it."
Tears welled up in her eyes and she covered her mouth with her hand. What had she done? What the hell had she done...? Chubbs was the most kind and sweet man she had ever met in her life, how could she have hurt him like that?
She felt sick as her stomach lurched, forcing Awen to take support from the wall, now behind her. Still in shock the tears came so quickly she hardly felt like she was crying, no sobs as her heart ached, just an overflow of salty drops. She slid down the wall and curled her arms around her legs.
"I didn't mean it...." She murmured to him though he would never hear it. "Chubbs I'm sorry I didn't mean it!"
And that was it her breaking point. Awen hugged her legs as close to her as she could as she was overcome with wracking sobs. She hadn't meant it as it sounded....she never meant to hurt him...
Awen had ruined an amazing thing that man had. She had seen him upset, she had seen him concentrating, thoughtful, doubtful; but one thing she never saw was Chubbs so upset he had to leave. She had never seen his heart bleed and tears well up.
The blue haired girl had hurt this man terribly. And hated herself for it... Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs heard the words as he left the door, he didn't want to hear them, he just wanted to get away, to find something to stop the hurting and that meant to get away from Awen. He was in shock still, he didn't believe it was her that could hurt him so much. He sniffed, trying not to cry, he hated to cry, it was something people picked on you for. To see a big guy like that cry, others would just call him a p***y, that's all he needed to hear right now. Instead he heard something ele, his ears twtching slightly as he turned back to the duplex. He could hear Awen, through the walls and the door, he didn't know he could do that. He heard Awens voice and her sobbing and he felt his heart shatter into pieces. Chubbs really cared more about others than he did himself, and he brought Awen to tears. No matter how much he was hurting right now, he couldn't sit by and cause someone to cry like that. Chubbs finally breathed and walked back to the door. He opened it and stepped inside, he didn't slow till he got to Awen. PArt of him wished he'd still left, that she should feel what he did, that she deserved it. But the part that mattered made his sit down beside her and pick her up, sit her in his lap and wrap his arms around her. Awen Zyn Awen hardly heard the door open and only realised someone else was there when she felt the arms wrap around her. She blinked in confusion, the tears sticking to her eyelashes, as she looked up at Chubbs. Without another moment wasted and wrapped her arms back around the big man and squeezed.
"I didn't mean it." She choked out. "I didn't mean it like that Chubbs I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I'm such a horrible person. I don't want you to be upset. I didn't mean for it to be so... mean Chubbs. I'm sorry." Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs held Awen tight and tried to pet the back of her hairwithout hurting her with his claws. He bundled her up like kid in his arms and tried to calm her down. " Shhh, it's okay Awen, you don't need to cry" He was thinking about what she said, how hard it dug inside him and hurt. He knew Awen, he knew she didn't mean to hurt him, it just did. He really should be upset at Billy for trying to hurt her, or damn Moreau for the island in the first place. He thought about what he could say to let Awen know it was okay, or at least lie about it, for he truely wasn't. " I wish I could be superman, then I can be where people need me, and I can take you and everyone away from this place and know you were safe. But I'm just a guy, or what's left of one.... I'll be here when I can... like I am now. Sabin has more than I can offer though, he has money, resources and around the clock monitoring I bet. He has power in this place I don't, it's easy to be impressed by him, rather than me, a fat a** ex-boxer with the smarts of a brick" He cuddled her to him, rubbing her back with a fist so his claws didn't scratch her in any way. " Don't worry about me, i'll be fine, I just want you to be okay" Awen Zyn Awen shook her head vigourously. "No, no, no!" She pulled away to look up into Chubbs' eyes. "Chubbs... this isn't about you not being good enough! You were the one there to help us all survive the blackout, right? You were the one man selfless enough to give up the food you desperately needed to me and Joli and Lauren. You hardly knew Lauren and you were doing your best to protect her too. Chubbs I am impressed with you, terribly impressed with you! You do do everything you can and cope better than anyone in your situation." She brushed a hand along his furry cheek. "I didn't mean to compare you directly... Sabin might have the power, the resources, the money..... but that is not what impresses me about him at all. Back on mainland I came from a family with money, power and resources... so honestly it's not very impressive. It's the easy way out of a lot of things and I know you are stronger than that. Your heart weighs more than all that stuff does. I didn't ever see Sabin giving up his free time to teach little kids how to box, giving them a productive outlet for their energy and keeping them off the street and out of trouble. I don't see Sabin having to struggle through what we do and still hold a bit heart melting smile."
She shook her head slowly once more. "I never meant for you to think that he was better than you Chubbs because there is just no comparison there." SHe sighed softly and looked down to the floor. Her hand idley curled and ran across his fur softly. "I just... I know Sabin has good in him. I mean sure what Joli says makes him seem like he's nothing but a b*****d... I've heard of some of the stuff he's done...if not all of it. But he's not like that to everyone. I mean... people's views disagree and when their views are strong enough they are instinctively forced against eachother..making them enemies. I don't get along with everyone, and I know not even you can get along with everyone. Some people are just more open about it and in the end bad things happen. I cannot believe everything people say about other people because they have a bias towards that person. Joli hates Sabin, if he just walk by her she'll probably think he was doing something to snub her, or act supirior or something like that, even if he was just walking by. Heck I think the same of Antony half the time when I see her with Jamal. It still boils my blood a bit and everything she does with him, or any other guy, it seems like a stab at me. Because she, in essence, took him from me... but could easily toss him aside for the next thing with a p***s that walks by. People can't agree with everyone. People can't be like everyone else... And so people sometimes can't see past the differences. People can't see past what they disagree with to the good in someone."
She gave his arm a little squeeze. "I was only saying.... that there is good in Sabin. He is extremely nice to me... I know he's done bad.... but you just have to know he is capable of good too. I never meant to hurt you Chubbs... I was just... agressively asking you to give him a chance, give me a chance." Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs tried to look at the floor when Awen spoke of him, only through Joli had he'd been seen so highly by someone before. He tried not to cry, he couldn't swallow, but he knew it wasn't right about him. He had been failing, falling, what ever it was that made him Chubbs was depleting, and he wasn't the happy guy he always was anymore. When she touched his cheek a tear fell down his face, he wanted to be what Awen believed him to be, but he lost the fight a while ago. Chubbs leaned into her hand and held her to him, and it was only that she mentioned something that took Chubbs a moment to register, did he lift his head. Jamal, a guy he'd grown to know a little, to at least call a friend was taken by another?, from Awen? Chubbs couldn't believe it, the last time he had seen them both, they looked like a great couple, he was happy for Awen and now this? Chubbs had to take a breath, he was trying to listen to what Awen was telling him, but in the back of his mind, Jamal's face was meeting Chubbs' fist, over and over again. Chubbs sighed when she stopped and tried to brush her tears away and patted her cheek, he tried to think of the right things to say. " All I can hope is Awen, that he starts to treat others the same, for you know he's done some things to Joli, but I've been there when she's broken down and cried, and he's still done it. If you have anyway to make the man stop, or to make him a better person, try, for me and Joliette, cuz seeing her hurt and crying, and the fact I can't do anything but watch it happen,.... it's killing me... it's really... killing me" Chubbs couldn't help it then and his eyes welled up with tears, he had to wipe his eyes with his furry hand, which didn't work that well. Awen Zyn Awen nodded slowly and gave Chubbs a big squeeze. "I know.... I know Chubbs. I was already planning something like that, but it's not like there is anything between us, and I'm not sure I hold any sway at all. I just want to make things better for everyone..." Sighing with a smile she brushed the tears away from his furr when he failed to with his paw.
"I will duck out of anything that doesn't seem right or that I don't want to do. I will ditch the guy if he ends up just being a jerk. There are limits of what I will take Chubbs. But for now I just want to try to see the good in him, maybe he will become a better person when someone gives him the chance?" She shrugged a little bit and gave Chubbs another big squeeze.
"It'll be okay Chubbs, really. I'm sorry I got ya crying here..." She gave him a tentative smile. "How about we stop all these tears. Pretty soon there might be enough salt water in here to choke me again, and we wouldn't want that again, right?" Her smiled widened to a half grin, implying her joke. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs nodded and sighed, he kinda felt useless again, one for being the big cry baby and helping Awen instead, and two, for not being able to dry his own tears. He looked up, gave half a smile to her at least. " Sorry, I hate these damn claws , they are... wait... that what you where doing out on the beach? I thought Manta's were sea creatures, least that I remember" Chubbs wasn't sure, he just gave Awen a hug again and petted her back softly, it wasn't her fault he was crying, it was him, and everything that happened to him. " Just what ever you did, don't do it again, You might summon that bitchy woman again to yell at me. God I musta peed on their favourite rose bush or something I don't know about. I'm copping s**t from the staff lately" Awen Zyn Awen nodded a little bit and sighed. Finally she stood up and offered a hand to Chubbs, feeling a littler weird just curled up by her door like they were. "I think Aubrey was still upset for Jamal laying into her for the stuff that happened during the blackout..." Awen skirted around the laying into her part... after all he was upset no sense telling him Jamal tried to kill the poor girl. "And appearently they design us water types to be freshwater so we can't swim off the island. Which makes sense. But that also means no surfing or snorkling or anything like that."
She rubbed the back of her neck selfconsciously. "And I won't try to escape again... I learned that lesson. I just didn't want to see Avery cry anymore. Or anyone else have to go through this. I thought I had a shot but...guess not eh?" Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs took the hand and stood up with a grunt and patted her shoulder. He hoped she was feeling better at least. " Yeah well, I didn't deserve it, and I'm scared. What she did was part of the reason I snapped when I changed, and if I hadn't used every bit of willpower I had in me,... Jolliette might have gotten worse than just a bruise. This serum, it's down right horrible" Chubbs nodded about her not trying to escape, smart plan that, make the aquatic types fresh water orientated. He had no idea what that could have done to Awen. " There's alot you'll do for those you care for, but this islands basically screwed us to the wall and not alot we can do but just be there. All I'm hoping for is that this place frigs up jurrasic park style" Chubbs then gave her a hug and a kiss on her cheek and ruffled her hair. " I'll get outa ya hair alright, let ya play ya xboxy thing and i'll grab some eats" Awen Zyn Awen nodded slowlybut by the end of what he was saying couldn't help but smile. She gaved Chubbs a great big hug before backing away again. "Alright Chubbs then. You take care, okay? And I hope to see you again soon..."
So the serum had been messing him up? He gave Joliette a bruise... could have been more? Looking at him Awen realised what powerful beasts were inside of him. It really hurt to know he had such violent instincts coursing around just under that Chubbsie exterior. But he would hold on, he could fight for his humanity.
She embraced the big man one last time before moving to open the door. "Have a good meal hun." Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs returned the hug and nodded as he set his way out the door. He turned to give Awen a light wave as he left and a wink. " See ya round" It was simple and enough to be said as he headed towards the cafeteria. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he mind was thinking about the things that were said.

World Record: Fastest KO ever Zachary Bloodstone As soon as his feet had stopped hurting him, Zach had left the forest for the village. What he'd almost done to Avery had scared him, and after a quiet battle of wills he realized he may be safer if he or his random biting urge weren't so hungry. The cafeteria was deserted. He breathed a sigh of relief and took a step inside, only to discover his clawlike toenails made a telltale clicking sound on the floor. He stopped, closed his eyes, counted to ten, and then slipped the rest of the way in, ignoring the noise he made. His scaly red tail curled close in anxiety. Again, no one was there. He could do this. Just grab something to eat, scarf it down, and leave without being seen. Maybe no one would believe Avery if he said Zach changed. But it was more likely they would... He took a tray and a plate. Absently he started to take a steak, but stopped himself. No, he wasn't going to eat meat. He'd have a salad. He was a human, not a... a dragon. Not that the word really helped to explain anything. He piled a colorful arrangement of lettuce and vegetables on his plate instead, and sat down at a table in the middle of the room. Chert Sanders After that night at his duplex Chert had resumed his aimless wandering, but he hadn't strayed far from the village. In fact, he'd made it a point to return everday at dusk despite the fact that he found it nearly impossible to sleep the whole way through the night in that room. The weak remnants of the scent of misery and decay refused to dissipate completely, haunting his dreams and coloring his thoughts with unpleasant images. But he stayed, because to do otherwise would be to concede victory to Aubrey. That day, his feet had happened taken him to the cafeteria- or perhaps he'd been following his stomach. It growled impatiently, eager for a substantial meal. Chert had been eating about as well as he'd been sleeping. The scents that hung in the air of the building were positively heavenly, but he restrained his eagerness and entered cautiously, still wary of the "excitement" that had occured several nights ago. Luckily, there seemed to be no knife-wielding druggies present at the moment, although he was dismayed to find that there was already another islander making use of the salad bar. But though he was reluctant to talk to anyone, his stomach would tolerate no hesitation. Food. Now! Jesus, alright. Alright! Chert grumbled at the needy organ. He entered the cafeteria, trying to not stare at the outlandish pair of horns that graced the stranger's head (the attempt was only marginally successful). What kind of reptile was decorated like that? Or had they tinkered with his serum in the same way they had Antony's? Zachary Bloodstone No sooner had Zach put his tray down did he hear someone else in the room. He froze up quickly. Was it someone he knew? Hopefully not. He debated turning around, but he was afraid to. He'd changed so much, he hadn't even been recognizable to Avery at first. It was like Cassidy had said about looking in mirrors... Caught still standing, he was stuck. After holding his head up a little more - it took more effort to hold it level thanks to the horns - he took a quick glance over his shoulder to survey the other man in the cafeteria. It was a guy, but not anyone he'd ever met. They didn't look changed, at least from what he saw. There was brief eye contact. The other man was staring back at him. More specifically, they'd been staring at his horns. He went a little red in the face and turned away. He had a few choice words for Sabin now, but he was too weak to ever say them the doctor aloud. He sat down, his tail bumping against the leg of his chair and causing a grunt of pain. He found his voice, addressing the other man in the room without looking at him. "Please don't... don't look at me like that." Chert Sanders The request caused Chert to wince internally, but his expression didn't vary from its habitual frown of guarded cynicism. He muttered something incomprehensible, annoyed at being caught staring. As much as he'd promised himself that he'd act nonchalant when he met another subject, it was difficult to remain unruffled when faced with a living example of the island's reality. Sure, he'd seen Colche and Awen already, but at that point and time he'd been a little too preoccupied to view the transformations as anything beyond disturbing and macabre anomalies. Now he had time to properly appreciate the situation. Wonderful. Chert gathered up a ham sandwich, potato chips, coleslaw, and sat down a reasonable distance from the lizard man. The stranger's teeth looked unfriendly in every sense of the word- definitely designed for the efficient dispatch of prey animals- but his plate was heaped with greenery. Someone was in denial. Chert couldn't help but raise an ironic eyebrow at the sight. Zachary Bloodstone Zach tried to disappear further into his seat. Who was this guy? He hadn't looked like he had never seen a changed islander before. The scrutinizing glance he'd recieved from the other man looked more like curiosity. Zach looked down at his salad some more, thinking guiltily about how he'd seen the other islanders. He picked up his fork and speared several greens. Who was he kidding? He still thought they were all freaks. He was just a freak, too. He was about to take a bite when he saw the newcomer looking at him out of the corner of his eye. He closed his mouth a little bit, the sharp canines still poking through, and lowered the fork a little. His yellow eyes looked half-closed in annoyance. With the fork, he gestured loosely at his plate. "This is called a 'salad'. But... that's not what you were looking at, huh?" Chert Sanders Chert hadn't expected his expression to be noticed, but he met the stranger's golden eyes squarely and gave him a lop-sided grin. "You're a peculiar brand of a*****e, I'll admit." Though his voice was tinged with irritation, it wasn't entirely unfriendly, inhabiting that gray area between insult and playful jab. Zachary Bloodstone "I'm flattered," Zach said flatly. He shook his head and turned back to his meal. He automatically didn't like this guy, fitting him in with the general apprehension he was having for dangerous-looking islanders. He wasn't about to forget his experience with Billy, the tentacled man who'd gone crazy on him in this same room. The toying tone, the expression, both were good reminders. All he needed now was to be punched in the jaw again and the illusion would be complete. He took his first bite of salad, managing to get it down without gagging. His animal half became annoyed that it wasn't meat. He took another bite anyhow, still working to prove these odd instincts wrong, that they weren't real. He couldn't deny he was a scaly monster, but he wasn't messed up in the head as well. He wasn't about to have a third bite, though, if he was going to feel disgusted eating something as familiar as lettuce. He tried to take his mind off of his confusion by speaking to the newcomer. Unlike the last time, he wouldn't be defenseless in a fight. "You look pretty new... how long have you been here?" Chert Sanders Zach was obviously not amused, which meant that Chert definitely was. The tendency to rag on people a little during a first encounter was deeply ingrained in the stocky man; the inclination was partially due to simple curiosity at what might happen if he verbally prodded someone (much like a kid's need to poke at anything interesting with a stick), and partially due to the fact that it quickly identified the people who could tolerate Chert's questionable brand of humor and those who couldn't. Zach seemed to belong to the larger of the two groups (the latter). Normally, the chill in the lizard man's tone would have rankled enough to provoke less playful harassment, but the fight with Antony was still fresh in Chert's mind. He decided to simply shut his mouth for once. It didn't seem like the other man felt much like talking. After a few moments of quiet, however, the stranger spoke up again. Chert looked up from his sandwich and snorted. "Too long." Zachary Bloodstone "It can feel like that..." Zach looked the guy over once more. He was human. Totally, undeniably human. He felt envious. He tapped his claws on the table a couple of times. He tried reaffirming he wasn't alone in having been tricked. "Did they sell you a lie to bring you here?" Chert Sanders The tapping diverted Chert's attention from Zach's reptilian features to the man's arm for the first time, and he realized belatedly that it seemed to be lacking a parter. Apparently, Moreau was an equal-opportunity victimizer. How admirably PC. The scientist was truly a man of the twenty-first century. "Of course not," Chert drawled sarcastically, annoyed at what he saw as a question with only one obvious answer. "They offered to turn me into a ******** rat, and naturally I jumped at the opportunity." Zachary Bloodstone He noticed the sarcasm and didn't take kindly to it. His odd bloodlust rose a little bit, since he still hadn't appeased his carnivorous urges at all. And with the stress of the transformation and nearly biting Avery's face off, he wasn't going to roll over and take Chert's unfriendly attitude. It was a good opportunity for him to get his anger out. He'd had a lot of it bottled up in the past few weeks, since he'd been wary of pissing off anyone with large teeth and claws. Zach bared his own teeth at the other man. "It was just a question. What's your problem?" Chert Sanders Having yet to suffer any sort of change, Chert was largely unaware of the strange instincts that came along with the physical transformations. The ferocity of Zach's expression took him by surprise. It was, well... not the type of face he expected another human being to make, and the savage effect was only magnified by the large, dagger-like canines in Zach's mouth. "What do you think my problem is?" he asked. He hadn't raised past its initial volume, but it still retained that strange mix of amusement and displeasure. "I'm hopelessly stranded on a strange island with a mad scientist who's decided to reenact what sounds like a plot from a bad b-movie horror flick, and every night I go to bed with the knowledge that tomorrow I might wake up substantially furrier than the day before." As he was talking, Chert took the opportunity to casually scoot back in his chair so that he could stand up more easily, if need be. Billy's earlier attack had made him a little paranoid, and the look Zach gave him was worrying. "Aren't you upset?" Zachary Bloodstone "Hopelessly stranded?" Zach smirked at the other man. That story was all too familiar to him. He'd only started itno the next chapter the previous night. However, Zach wouldn't be nice if the other man wouldn't. While he was reminded of his horns a lot by their weight, he wasn't used to his new appearance and didn't realize how frightening it could be. "It's not hopeless until you look in the mirror and you don't know what the hell you are any more. Anyway, you're not a rat yet. Try to escape. Try to get out of here. Maybe you will." He reached for his fork again but stopped at the other question the newcomer posed to him. He pondered it while staring the man down again with his yellow eyes. Yes, of course he was upset. But he'd been defeated in the most miserable way, his humanity taken by a psychopath. The extent of his changing hadn't quite sunk in, leaving him still rather numb to just how little he was looking or even sounding like himself. He spoke quietly. "Yes... or at least, I was when it happened. I'm not even sure if it's worth being upset right now. It's not going to get rid of these horns... or this tail..." Chert Sanders The thought of escape was what kept Chert roaming about the island (getting away was a lot easier if you were familiar with your surroudings, after all), but matters were a lot more complicated than just "trying to escape." Like he'd still be here if it were that simple! Chert gave a wordless growl of frustration. "It's a little hard to make a proper attempt when the staff can drop you with a word." A nerve twinged unhappily in his back as he thought of that day he'd confronted Aubrey. If only he had some way of disabling whatever the hell it was they'd put in his neck, or finding out the range of its effectiveness, or escaping the cameras long enough to something useful... Not to mention, there was the matter of the flu-like illness that Antony had mentioned that affected those who went too long without an injection. Probably fatal, or at least debilitating enough to prevent a stressful ocean escape. He tried not to think about the comment about the mirror. It was a chilling thought. "You're just going to lie down and take it, then? Everything's fine and dandy?" There was unveiled contempt in Chert's tone. He couldn't imagine remaining passive, even if rage was a waste of energy. Maybe you bloodied yourself needlessly against the wall in your way, and maybe the wall gave. It was impossible to know unless you kept trying. Zachary Bloodstone Zach looked down, still a little mystified by the thought of that. He'd heard several people mention the 'magic word' command, but he hadn't seen it happen to anyone. Thus it hadn't crossed his mind. That did make for a bigger obstacle than the cameras. "Oh..." There wasn't a lot he could say to that. He frowned at the other man's biting questions. The shock of the change was wearing off... He examined himself mentally. He was a freak. Ten seconds and a piece of lettuce later, he wanted a second opinion. Well, he was still a freak, but with one less arm than all the other freaks had. With a sound between a growl and a whine he leaned down and put his forehead against the table. "Oh, ******** this. What am I supposed to do? I've got scales! And these damn horns, and a tail, and apparently I'm not even through yet. I'm some kind of... monster or something now. But even before that, I've had one arm! I can't even clap... or swim... or a lot of things. It drives me crazy... it drove me crazy when it happened and it still does and I'm probably never going to get over it. I hate what they've done to me. I want to be human again. God, If I go pissing those doctors off here they'll probably just take the other one. They're crazy." His eyes were getting red and itchy from crying as he ranted. He'd waited years and years to say he wasn't content with one arm, he was too scared to admit it before. He was so stressed, and tense, and this man was getting on his nerves so much he had to say it. He'd be lying to himself if he thought it was all going to be okay this way. Chert Sanders The emotional torrent of words stunned Chert into silence. He simply sat and stared in a mixture of horror and astonishment as Zach vented his supressed frustration and unhappiness into the air of the cafeteria. Hell's bells! Were those tears? The lizard man was actually crying. In public. Embarassment at the wretched display seized Chert's chest and caused him to quickly avert his eyes, visibly thrown off-balance for the first time that day. "Lunatics," he agreed distantly, staring fixedly at the half-eaten sandwich on his plate. Yes, the ham was interesting. Maybe he'd just examine it for a little while, appreciate the visual intricacies of the meat. Zachary Bloodstone "S-sorry... just ignore me..." Zach stared dejectedly at the floor and his clawed toes. He closed his yellow eyes and tried to think of something else. Like why there had to be so much surveillance, all the time. However, being constantly watched was making him nervous too. He lifted his horned head a bit and pounded a fist against the table in frustration. The other man had become quiet other than an echoed sentiment, so he looked at him. He looked uncomfortable. That same want for hunting that he'd been in confusion over all that morning had returned to him. It had a plan and a purpose - it wanted to kill. Albeit it wasn't strong enough to force Zach to do anything truly outrageous, but at the moment he was feeling upset and hollow. The predator could have picked no better time to to stir. For a moment Chert didn't look like a person, but a careless creature just sitting out in the open. Perfect prey. Zach stared rather blankly at the other man, who seemed unaware. One well-placed bite in the skull... he clicked his large canines together. It would be so simple. He ignored the salad in front of him. Why finish it? the dangerous side of him thought. There was something else in the room that would be much more fun to make a meal of. Chert Sanders Chert made a vaguely positive, incomprehensible sound- That's what I'm trying to do- and continued to examine his sandwich. At least, until Zach pounded the table. The unexpected noise brought Chert's head snapping around to focus on the source, and he found himself staring directly into the bright yellow eyes of the stranger. Something in Zach's expression seemed, off. Gone was the distress and dismay, but it was difficult to say what had replaced them. A frown crept across Chert's face as he tried to decipher the strange look. "What?" he demanded irritably, feeling out of sorts after the last surprising and unwelcome turn in the conversation. At least the tears had stopped. Zachary Bloodstone Zach didn't look that aware of Chert watching him, and the odd expression didn't go away. The growing of so much new bone and muscle had taken a lot out of him, which had driven his hunger far further in this one day than it would have otherwise been. As much as the salad was meant to be a statement, it had been a very bad choice. He was in such a confused state thanks to the craving for meat that it was rather blurred where his thoughts stopped and the predator's started. He gave the other man a grin that exposed the sharp tips of all his newly changed teeth. Would he run? He'd give chase if he had to. His tail was no longer curled but swished from side to side. Chert Sanders The lashing of Zach's tail helped the memory that had been tugging at the back of Chert's mind to click into place. Once, he'd dated a woman who was in love with a little sleek, gray tabby cat. On occasion, when he wasn't desperately trying to prevent it from weaving between his legs on the stairs, he'd sit and watch it stalk the dust motes that swam in the sun beams. During those times, its eyes had been glazed over in predatory anticipation and its tail had lashed eagerly at the air. Somehow, Zach didn't look so different. Chert slowly got his feet, his eyes locked onto Zach all the while. Don't break eye contact, no sudden movements, stand up straight, swear off all humanoid contact if you survive this goddamn Moreau I'll kill you you ******** b*****d why did I get out of bed today? He spoke from between his teeth as one hand groped around on the table for something- anything- to help. "Snap out it, scaly." His fingers encountered something cool and slick, and latched onto the item firmly. It was a... deadly fork. Great. He was going to fend off an angry lizard man with a fork. Hope it's a sharp one, Chert thought grimly, taking his eyes off of Zach for a heartbeat to glance towards the door. Could he make it if the stranger decided to pounce? This really wasn't how he'd been hoping to end his day. Colche "I can show you the world" the voice echoed as the door opened to the cafeteria, it was a sweet voice, gentle in it's way if somewhat childish, the song was broken by several pauses and came to a very abrupt stop when the Cheetah girl stepped in tot he Cafeteria and saw the two men. Sweet blue eyes fell on the two men and ehr tongue lapped out to lick at her furry lips in a nervous manner. Her tail twitched, the very tip lashing back and forth until finally she stepped in to the cafeteria continuing her song "A hundred thousand.." at every pause she glanced at the two men, she was trying to be brave, she had claws remember? She had teeth and she was a dangerous..uhm...okay she was scared and knew it. She paused half way towards the food counter, her belly rumbled in a resounding manner urging her to go on but the little girl inside her told ehr to run, taking a deep breath she held the air and padded still further towards the two men, they were between her and breakfast and she wasn't happy about having to walk past them or face them, she was still feeling a little delecate though the bruises on her flesh were still visable they were starting to fade. She couldn't be scared of men, they wouldn't hurt her, Aubrey was watching, Aubrey was watching and she had claws.... Zachary Bloodstone Zach's tail stopped when the man made the sudden move to grab a fork. What was he doing? That little piece of metal wouldn't protect him. He rose out of his seat slowly as well, though balance was a lot more difficult than he had planned. His toes were uncooperative, he wouldn't be able to run as fast as he thought he could. He arched his back a little bit instead. His attention wavered at the sound of singing. Someone else had come into the room. A rather furry girl - he recognized her as Colche vaguely. She looked like something he could catch easily. She was coming right towards them. All his attention on Chert and the fork had dissipated. His clawed hand was itching to strike. His yellow eyes followed her movements. Any moment now... Chert Sanders It took a moment for the incongruous sound of children's song to penetrate the cloud of adrenaline surrounding Chert's brain. He followed the direction of Zach's golden gaze and was appalled to find the feline girl he'd met his first day on the island wandering right past the tense face-off towards the food bar. The reptile looked interested in the unwary prey. Very interested. Chert wanted to shout, What the hell are you doing?! Get away!, but all that escaped his lips was an angry-sounding "Get!" as he let the fork fall to the floor and snatched up the plate with the sandwich on it. He doubted he could reach Colche in time, but maybe he could buy her a few seconds to escape with a distraction. The dinnerware was the heaviest thing within reach. As Chert hollered the warning, he chucked the plate straight at Zach's head with all of the force he could muster. It sliced through the air like a large, food-laden throwing star- ...only considerably less deadly. Maybe it would distract Zach from his current goal. Colche Colche was a little bemused to say the least, everything happened so quickly, first Zach turned to her with a hungry look. She had stopped that instant, her tail tip still twitching as the cheetah replied with a wide mouthed fangy hiss. Some where the cheetah inside her said, I'm a predator too and i'm hungry before I make you breakfast, but Colche just didn't listen. She l;ooked around frantically taking a step backwards "Bad" she answered in reply to the glare though her attention was soon taken to Chert. 'Get' She would but the door was some way behind her now, her ears flattened to her head, run, run, run, but still she stayed stock still watching as the plate took aim for Zachs head. She knew she could outrun zach, she was fast, fast as greewsed lightning but she was mesmerised and stayed still though a cattish growl echoed fom her chest, she had claws she could fight, the door did look awfully tempting though, she took another step back, all she had to do was turn and she could run, noone could catch her if she ran. Zachary Bloodstone Zach bared his teeth a little more toward Colche. God, was he hungry. She'd make a good meal. He advanced toward her frozen form, ready make a killing blow. Chert's aim had been pretty good, but not superb. The heavy ceramic plate hit Zach in the upper arm, jarring him from his prepapations to pounce. It hurt, yes, and it infuriated him. But the brand-new scales Zach had grown along the side of his arm had served their purpose and deflected most of the plate. It bounced away and crashed against the floor nearby. Zach let out a hiss. He was tired of this. He wanted his prey, and he wanted it now. He wasn't going to wait much longer, the hunger was driving him insane. He gave a quick look to Colche, then whirled around and made a leap onto the table and quickly off to the other side of it. He stood on his odd feet and took a step closer to the other man. Being hit with a plate wasn't going to keep him from his goddamn dinner. There'd be nothing but bones left behind once he got done with this man. He lunged at the man, just like he had at Avery. Snap! But again, something stopped him from sinking his teeth into anything but air. Chert Sanders Chert was startled to find Zach's impressive canines close to his face- a little too close for comfort. Too close for anything, in fact, but a torrent of tension, fear, and anger that howled through his veins and made coherent thought a distant, untouchable concept. Bits of him begged to run away, bits of him seemed determined to stand their ground and fight, and a few even suggested just closing his eyes and trying to mark off the whole ordeal as a bad dream. But somehow, he wasn't dead. A small bit of information finally worked its way through the chaos and disorder in his brain- the sensation of a bony, unfamiliar texture in the palms of his hands. Chert realized that he currently hand both of Zach's large, impressive horns captured in his grip. As this meant that the rest of Zach was not currently too far away, it was not an entirely comforting realization, but he was glad to know that he could count on his body to take care of things when the rest of him went to pieces. Chert grimaced at the lizard man and held on for dear life. There didn't seem to be many other options available. Colche Colche's tail lashed one more time, her ears flattening as she saw what happened, the other guy had caught the scary guy by the horns. She was a little confused right now and names escaped her. The door looked ever so enticing but she didn't run away fromt he chaos, instead she leapt towards it. The first thing in view of her, slightly manic attack was Zachs tail. It wriggled so enticingly. Without a second though she pounced the guy digging ehr fangs deep in to his stubby tail and clinging to his hips with her claws. She had never attacked anyone before. She knew that Chert was trying to protect her though and realised, silently, that she could help protect him, she had claws and she could bite! Zachary Bloodstone Zach tried to lean in again, snapping at Chert's face in what he hoped was a deadly bite. However, the two hands of his that were wrapped around his new horns were keeping him at bay. Not only that, but it hurt! The horns had just grown the night before, and yanking them around was giving him a headache. He made a wordless sound of pain and stopped to consider his options. First, he had to get out of this grip. Second, he had to- He howled inhumanly when he felt teeth sink into yet another extremely sore spot, his tail. These new additions had barely grown in, they were still sensitive, and while he was prepared to ignore the claws in his hips, he had to dislodge the cat-girl's fangs. He struggled in Chert's grip, his red tail thrashing wildly. He reached out his own hand and tried to scratch his claws into the man's left hand. Chubbs MacKraken Chubbs shuffled somewhat sadly towards the cafeteria, he was very hurt, cut to the bone, he felt like he'd been stabbed in the heart. He was going to stuff his face with something sugary, something to use to forget and just enjoy, like cake. His ears perked when he heard loud noises and a crash coming from the cafeteria, making him jog a bit faster to see what was up. And there he saw what looked like a fight, a frenzy. Two guys he didn't know, one freaked out the ying yang and Colche mauling the guys tail. Chubbs flung the door open and raced in, it had to stop, then it struck him, was this the b*****d Billy that went after Colche? It was like a switch, like Chubbs had split personality, if he'd been the hulk he'd been turning green. Instead he had a raging beast and Chubbs was willing to use it. He couldn't be there all the time for everyone, he wasn't god, but right now Colche needed him, and the guy holding the jerk by the horns. Chubbs charged, even with the two on him already, Chubbs wasn't going to let up. Just as the freak took a swipe, Chubbs latched his hand over the wrist of the freak boy and twisted it in a way it shouldn't be twisted. With his free hand, calws and all wrapped around the jerk's neck and lifted him into the air. To Chubbs it felt like lifting a child. Chubbs pulled freako's face to look at his own and he let him see the beast in his eyes and made sure he remembered it. Baring his teeth Chubbs let out a deafening roar right into the guys face, sending spittle flying. With wrath in mind, Chubbs went to send the guy sailing, but suddenly it started to grow dark, and he felt the cold surface of the floor on his back. Chert Sanders Chert had just sent a brief look of gratitude to Colche when the door burst open... And he wasn't exactly sure what happened after that. Something mountainous barreled into the room- it was large, dark, and positively furious- and yanked Zach into the air as if he were made of balsa wood. Chert barely had time to release the horns he'd been clinging to desperately, falling backwards as a defeaning roar assaulted his ears. "********!" he yelped. Although it seemed the word best-suited to his state of mind, it didn't come close to expressing the tumultuous mixture of confusion, terror, and fury the whole incident inspired. All of them, he thought dazedly. All of us, lunatics. The whole island. Colche As the door was flung open, Colche's fangs had slowly released Zachs tail, it was Chubbs! Chubbs would save them. Though it wasn't what the slender femme expected. Fear crawled on to the cheetah girls face and she pounced Chert hiding her big blue eyes in his chest. Her ears tightened against her head, her body trembled. She had never been frightened of Chubbs, but such an act, of terrible strength had jolted her back to the reality that not everything was black and white, not everything was good and bad. She kept her face buried deep in Cherts chest until she heard the thud and thump of a body hitting the ground. It was Chubbs. Her ears flattened her eyes going wide once again as she searched for Zach. She doubted she would be able to get a hold on him again. The fur on the back of her neck lifted on end, making her look decidedly fuzzier than usual. She panted once, a fear responce as she looked to Chert and trembled, he wouldn't hurt her would he? Chubbs was down, but was zach still wanting to make them in to breakfast? Zachary Bloodstone Zach was going from one horrible pain to another in his fight for a freshly killed meal. He felt the man's grip loosen on his horns, and at the same time Colche had let go of his tail and sides. The predator was satisfied with that. He started to turn toward Colche, unaware of the far more dangerous individual who charged him. Zach felt a tight grip on his throat and his feet lost their connection with the floor. He couldn't breathe! A darkly furred face looked at him for a moment, no one he had ever seen before, and the deafening roar would have been terrifying. Just like that, the beastly beast was sinking to the ground, and its stranglehold on Zach's windpipe was broken. Zach tried to stand back up but stumbled on his odd feet, coughing. He eyed Chert and Colche with a look that was even more desperate than in the beginning. He was wounded. All he came here for was a meal, and he was going to get it. He made another loud cough, straightened up a bit, and opened his mouth wide as he aimed to sink his teeth into one of the two. They couldn't get away from the predator this time. His eyes went wide in mid-lunge. A sharp shock hit him squarely in the back of the neck, just in time. The yellow eyes rolled back and his killing momentum was lost. He crashed to the floor in front of the two, as unconscious as Chubbs was. Not even his tail moved, a sure sign he wasn't going to leap up again and finish the job. Chert Sanders The sudden warm presence against Chert's chest elicited a feeling of dismay in the man. He felt ill-equipped to the play the role of protector, especially in a situation where strange and ferocious creatures seemed to be crawling out of the woodwork, but at the moment he was still too stunned to deny Colche's silent request. Chert wrapped his arms around her automatically, every muscle rigid with unease. It was then that he realized Zach hadn't gone down with the larger predator. He was reminded of one of those old horror movies where the monster kept trudging lumbering forward no matter how many times you shot it in the head or stabbed it in the chest or drowned it in the lake. Zach rose to his feet. His ankles tensed for the deadly leap. Some buried instinct flickered to life in Chert's head as the lizard flew into the air. He quickly swiveled around so that his body was inbetween Colche and the pouncing dragon, expecting to feel the sharp claws of the other man sinking into the flesh between his shoulders at any moment. But instead, there was a thump. Chert blinked slowly and glanced behind him. Was it possible he was that lucky? A single look said that, against all expectations, it was. He stared down at Zach's immoble body and fought down a sudden, violent urge to kick it squarely in the side. Colche Colche looked up at Chert, even with her toe tipped stance she was shorter than the guy. Her ears flattened she felt safe, of course she had clung tighter to him when Zach had come hurtling through the air only to drop with a very loud crack to the ground. She trembled in his arms, finally peering around to look at the two unconcious predators. What would happen to them? She wasn't exactly sure. Looking up at chert she looked for advice from the guy. She was still hungry, but her fear had driven away most of the emptyness she felt in her gut. "frightened" she whispered trmbling in his arms, what if they woke up and came at them again? Chubbs wasn't there to hurt them, she knew taht but zach had almost..well had he..she didn't want to be breakfast to him. Chert Sanders A small voice reminded Chert of Colche's presence. He blinked down at her in alarm, wanting nothing more than to disentagle himself from the awkward position. This was not anywhere near his realm of expertise. Chert did not do 'comforting.' He did not do 'reassuring.' What he did do well was 'go back to his duplex and freak the ******** out after nearly being mauled by a red, scaly b*****d,' but her questioning blue gaze held him in place for a moment. "It's alright," he answered, his voice gruff with strain. "They're both unconscious." Having never met Chubbs before, he assumed the roaring beast was yet another dangerous islander. Colche Colches fluffy ears twitched a bit as she looked down "scary" she stated again, still holding on to Chert though her grip was loosening slowly. Swallowing loudly she lifted her head and stood on her very tippy toes touching the mans cheek with her nose "thankyou" she smiled, it was a sweet innocent smile of somone not quite sure exactly what just happened but pretty sure taht it would all be alright. More to the point that Chert had sheilded her from the scary..well scaley red person. Was that Zach? She faintly remembered the name btu he had seeme so, nervous last time she had seen him."home Chert" she stated after a moment mores silence, she wanted to go and snuggle down where she was safe though she obviously thought it best that chert come with her. What if zach woke up? Chubbs wouldn't hurt her but she was pretty sure when people got knocked out the people in white came and took them away, she wasn't sure if she wanted to be around when that happened either. Chert Sanders Chert tried not to sigh in relief when he began loosening her grip so that he was able to take a step backward. Before he could, though, she caught him with her odd nose-kiss. He twitched away slightly, giving her thanks a soft grunt of what could have been acknowledgement or dismissal. Chert still had adrenaline doing a lively jive up and down his nerves, and the knowledge of how useless he'd been rankled. Most of the situations in his life he'd been able to handle with force after speech failed, but this... If the bear-like man hadn't entered for whatever reason he did, Chert was unsure of how the struggle with Zach would have turned out. He suspected, though, that it probably would have involved lots and lots of little crumb-sized Chert-bits all over the floor. "Home Chert," could have been a question or a demand (he wasn't yet versed in Colche's way of speech), but it sounded good either way. As long as they were anywhere but in the duplex. He could care less what happened to the bodies of the two predators. Moreau or his subordinates would take care of it. Chert began to make for the door, casting one last ruffled glance over his shoulder at the mess they'd left behind. He'd never gotten to finish his sandwich. Colche Colche smiled, she gave a puurr no realy understanding the grunt and taking it as an aggreement as they went towards the door. She hooked his shirt sleeve with her fingers and held on to it looking back to double check that Chubbs was okay. She frowned a little, Chubbs had been scary, but he wasn't usually. Licking her lips in a nervous manner she turned her attention to walking. "number seventeen chert" she stated as they left the cafeteria and she smiled softly, her blue eyes fixed upon the tough guy. To her, he had still gone to protect her from Zach, even if he had been knocked out before he could do anything. Colche desperately tried to link him to one of her story book or cartoon chracters, finally she came on one and giggled a little before tugging his sleeve "Chart brave, jus' like robin hood" she grinned, robin hood was brave and dodged arrows and everything, chert was definately like robin hood. Chert Sanders The tugging at his shirt caused Chert to look down, and he realized that Colche was attached to his arm. Apparently, she wasn't done with him yet. Maybe "home Chert" was more of a "Take me home, Chert" than a "Go home, Chert." He supposed that made sense. Several days of wandering had gotten him well-acquainted with the layout of the duplexes, and he was fairly sure that he knew where number seventeen was. If that's what she meant. A more purposeful tugging brought his attention down yet again. By this time he was feeling a little desperate, like a man that he been dropped in the middle of a desert and told to prepare the way for the penguins. Colche might have looked much older than a child, but her innocence reminded Chert very much of one- and he was terrible with children! He didn't have the necessary tools to deal with them. Deserts, penguins. Children, Chert. Not good combinations. Colche's next observation, which caused him acute embarassment, only served to reinforce his convictions. "I can't be like Robin Hood," he pointed out. "Robin Hood wears tights. We're from two different worlds." Colche Colche gave a little giggle looking at Chert she smiled in that ever so sweet and innocent manner, her blue eyes twinkling like stars as she reiterated her ideas "no need tights, Chert Hero, like robin hood" she smiled still looking up at the big man and puurring happily, her puurr came from her chest, she had no need to roll her tongue or anything. She held still to his shirt cuff though she caught up tto him to walk beside him and look at him in an admireing manner. She knew chubbs had helped to, she would tell him so later but Chert had gone to save her from Zach even though he didn't haev any claws, or big teeth or anything, he was ahero in the cheetah girls eyes. Chert Sanders Chert returned Colche's pleasant smile with a small frown. He was still trying to figure out what made her tick; she seemed even further along in the changes than Zach had been, but the only predatory tendencies she'd shown had been in the near-brawl back in the cafeteria. Maybe the other man was just unstable to begin with. That didn't explain her strange innocence, though. "I'm not a hero," he told her sharply. The thought that Colche might harbor that false impression upset him for reasons he couldn't identify. Soon, the door of her duplex came into view. He rubbed his neck with one hand and gestured towards the building with the other. "Home," Chert said simply. His limbs were beginning to feel watery now that the adrenaline rush was fading. Colche Colche pouted a bit. She turned one last time to Chert and smiled brightly, a sweet innocent look in her big blue eyes "yu huh" she giggled and released his shirt sleeve running for ehr duplex with a speed unknown to normal man without a bycicle or a car. Her door slipped open and she bounded in. She wasn't about to be told that Chert wasn't robin hood, she had decded for herself that he was.

Angharad was lost, both mentally and physically. She'd almost run down the steps of the strange apartment-like place she'd woken up in, and stared around in confusion at the more and more alien landscape. How could she be on an almost tropical island, having been in the middle of Canada only yesterday? Be more realistic, she thought bitterly. They must have been keeping us unconscious... Her mind would not allow her to think that Fiona was not there as well. It was all just some strange dream she was having, that was the most likely possibility. She stood in the village, circling round in one place, trying to take in as much of the surroundings as possible. This was insane, was she in an island prison? Just for breaking into a laboratory? A large building caught her eye, higher up the small mountain that seemed to dominate the island. Was that writing on the side...? But it was obscured by thick jungle trees, and no matter how she strained her eyes, it did not become clearer. She ran down an almost worn path, unfamiliar sandals pattering on the compacted earth, breath catching in her throat as she looked for signs of life or a way to see. She kept craning over her shoulder, that sign stencilled on the side of the building still frustratingly difficult to see.
Sand started scratching against her toes as she came out onto a shallow beach, curving away in a golden line against the blue. Shading her eyes, the girl peered at the building, its message all too horribly clear now.
Feral Laboratories.
Her legs almost gave way, and she sat down in an unceremonious heap on the sand. The police had let the lab people do what they wanted? Or perhaps.. the police had never been called... "This is a dream, this is a dream," she kept repeating fervently, over and over again under her breath.
Chubbs finally got out and about on the island since he got shocked. He finally knew the power of those at the wheel and what they could do to anyone of them at anytime. He didn't see it coming, it was that quick, and when he woke up, he was back onto his comfy bed, staring at the ceiling.
He eventually decided to get out, go for a walk, deffinately have a smoke at least. They calmed him down like tranquilizers some days, Chubbs was glad they had his brand. Slowly shuffling along the paths and onto the track out to the beach, Chubbs was glad for the cool breeze on his face, or rather fur now days. He took a deep puff and and his ears flickered at a suddenly muttering nearby. Peeking about, he stuck to the treelings at least and sniffed out a smell he hadn't quite smelled before. It was all new and fresh and following it lead himto a woman on her knees in the sand.
Chubbs thought for a moment, new person he hadn't seen, no sigh of a change, looking lost in the beach sand. Newbie it spelled out to him, least that's what he called the newcomers. The girl was going to know what would happen to her soon enough, but he thought he was the worst case person to tell her in the condition he was in. Just in case, he hid in the shadows of the tree's, took a puff of his smoke and spoke to her.
" Ya alright hun?"
Yeah Chubbs, stupidest question ever.
Angharad looked around at the sudden voice behind her.
And scrabbled backwards, a scream strangling in her throat. Was it an animal? It could talk? Her eyes widened, and her already fragile state of mind threatened to shatter. This is a dream this is a dream this isn't real...
"A-a-a... wha.. what are you?" Came out in a stuttering whisper. She knew that Feral Labs were unscrupulous, but to dress... well, it looked like a bear, with a strangly flattened face, and wearing clothes.. and having a smoke? What had theydone to the poor bear?? She kept her feet drawn up under her, ready to spring and flee, the morbid curiousity somehow surfacing. At least if it was a dream, she would find out what odd theories her mind had come up with.
Chubbs winced, he guessed his hiding skills sucked, guess his three animals weren't really stalkers. He took another puff to calm himself down, she, whoever she was, was deffinately a newbie. Chubbs had to think about what to say, he remembered a little of his security training, trying to deal with highly emotional people, he hoped any of it helped him out right now.
" Umm, look....don't be scared, I'm going to step out into the light some more and sit in the sand okay?... I might need to explain a few things to you. This is going to be hard, but try not to scream or run away,...just... for your own sake okay?
Chubbs put his smoke in his mouth and was going to hold his hands up in the air like he was showing he was unarmed, but yeah, puff up and look big, that was smart. So Chubbs stuffed his hands in his pockets and slowly shuffled out onto the sand and sat down, watching to see if the woman would piss bolt.
"Di-did they try and turn you into a human?" Angharad leaned back a bit as it came nearer, but did not run just yet. It wanted to explain.. to her? And it's conversation was very good. Feeling increasingly lightheaded, she kept both hands in the sand on either side of her, bruised frame tense and ready to run. Her arm was beginning to itch abominably now, but she resisted the urge for now. She would have to listen to what the bear was going to say... how many talking bears appeared in her dreams? Not since the Carebears when she was probably about six... Perhaps she should just relax and enjoy the ride.
Chubbs sighed and took anotherr smoke out of his pack. He lit it up with the embered stub of his old smoke and threw the old one away. He then held out the pack to the woman, smoker or not, he would've taken one if he was her.
" Okay, umm... where to start?"
Chubbs sighed again and ran his fingers through his hair, frustrated a little at the pressure of dumping the s**t storm of info at her.
" Okay... my names .. well it's David, but I'm called Chubbs. Umm... There's well.. more of us... other people on the island. "
Chubbs took a puff and continued.
" Okay bare with me this is hard. Moreau like... basically kidnaps people... yeah I'm human... well sorta... I guess I'm not so much anymore."
Chubbs sighed and looked depressed by his own statement, he really wasn't human anymore, no matter how much he wished it wasn't true.
" He does something to everyone, injects em with stuff then sets us all there in the village. After a while we all change, I mean.... well we get like animal DNA or something I guess. You'll find more of us... in the duplexes and stuff. Everyones like a different animal... I dunno why but I got mixed with three different ones... so yeah.."
Chubbs rubbed the back of his neck, and waited for the scream.
Angharad stared at him. And then laughed, collapsed in fits of giggles.
"You're a human then? Very nice, Mr David Bear," and her face was creased in laughter, but behind her muddy green eyes fear lurked, completely repressed. "And Moreau - "That name rang a bell. Wasn't he... the head of the Feral Labs? That would explain the building sign. " - this Moreau kidnaps us and injects us, just like the little puppies and rabbits and rats get injected." "And somehow I'm on a desert island full of people like you when all I did was help Fiona rescue the rabbits... oh, it all makes sense now!"
Her bright smile glazed, the bizarre information just not computing. And then she slumped sideways, head lolling on the sand as she fainted.
Chubbs shut his eyes, shook his head and slapped his forehead.
" Stupid stupid stupid!"
He didn't expect the laughing, or did he? He espected something, and that was about the second best result he could have thought of. The damn girl, why she have to go faint? Chubbs sighed a long heavy sigh again, got to his feet and dusted himsef down. He looked at the girl and pondered what to do. Chubbs scratched his chin and shuffled his way over to the girl and bent down, hoisting her up in his arms. He bumped her head up to it rested on his shoulder and considered his options. In the end, he thought he could take her back to his place. There was a bed, an intercom if she needed medicine or something and a door to lock if she got frantic.
So Chubbs began carrying her home, guessing it would take three more times to explain what was happening as she'd faint two more times. If he was right, he'd have some cake as a reward.
Darkness again. She remembered the darkness, but normally it was accompanied by that sweet cloying smell that made her feel sick to even think about. It shouldn't smell of... fur, and laundry powder.
She woke up blearily, and stared at the jolting sky. And then at the face of her erstwhile rescuer. This time she really did scream, kicking out with such a jerk that she would probably fall. The bear man wasn't really nice, he was carrying her away! What was going on?? "FIONAAAAAAAA!"
Chubbs blinked and tried to hold onto the wriggling girl, then she screamed and he winced and tried his best to settle her. In the end he finally got her on her feet but he held onto her elbows and was smart enough to turn to the side alittle. He expected some violence and he wasn't about to get a shot to the pills.
" Look settle the heck down okay, it's really not a good idea.. to get me stirred up okay?"
He tried to keep her still and quiet. Sure this would freak out anyone, but he didn't need this right now. He wanted to relax, chill, unwind, not think about mauling something. Mauling something like this girl in a minute if she continued her panic attack.
Angharad suddenly froze, the prospect of possible harm if she continued effectively stopping her in her tracks. She stared straight ahead, her body trembling, and took a deep breath. The 'hands' holding her firmly were much larger than those security guards, and she knew she didn't have much strength with which to release herself. She would have to ask.
"C-can you let go of me please? I'm alright now," she said in a small voice, tangled hair over her face still, obscuring her expression.
Chubbs looked at her face and he was suddenly reminded of Joliette frightened face. Chubbs felt ill and saddened and looked at the ground, he hated that look, it should be at horror movies and monsters. But he was a monster now, at least to this woman.
" Look, you fainted okay.. I was trying to put you on a bed so ya weren't nose deep in the sand... I know this is all hard to take. But I'll let you go... just don't go... running off. Part of who I am is a bear... and I've heard they chase down things hat run away okay... I'd rather not do that. Trust me I'm trying to help"
He didn't look up at her, he couldn't, but he did let her go finally. He tried to be slow then he put his hands behind him. He was indeed ashamed of the claws.
The thought of running away was high in her priorities, but on hearing the almost broken words of the mancreature behind her, as the grip was released, she stayed still for a moment.
"I - I'm sorry," Angharad whispered. "I - this - what's going on, I don't understand. But... I just need to go find my friend for the time being..." She turned hesitantly to face him, eyes wide and scared but almost pitying at the same time. "I... uh.. thanks." She stuttered out the words, and attempted to smile. "My name's Angharad Anderson, in case anyone asks for me..."
She backed off a few steps, keeping her treacherous legs from breaking into a run, and began to walk away, up the trail, back towards the strange box village.
Chubbs nodded and looked up, poor girl, had she come here with a friend too? He sighed and winced as the cigartte burnt his fingers and singed his fur. It had been a while and he was distracted, it had burnt down to the butt. He flicked it aside and she was already walking away, he quickly thought of something.
" If ya got anyquestions, go to ya duplex, and use the intercom! If ya get a dude named Sabin, hang up! Ya can get some answers there. I think I'm in number 25 if ya need to talk!"
Chubbs thought she'd never turn up there, but he had to offer, he might have been now the only thing to a friend she had.

Maybe Kaveri would give this another try. Honestly, she's still quite shaken over what had happened earlier with Bobby. Right now, all she wanted was the security of finding and talking to her first friend from the commune: Sabin.
Maybe... maybe he's home right now! She knew Bobby told her that she was wrong, but Kaveri is a stubborn, hardheaded girl. She wouldn't believe it until she saw it with her own eyes. So, what is there for her to do than set off for duplex 25? It's sometime late in the evening, so Kaveri pulls on her green hoodie and heads out. She again stalks down the line of duplexes, looking for 25 - it's a bit of a longer walk, but she finds it soon enough and approaches the door.
She really hopes Sabin is home. She takes a deep breath, swallowing hard and reaching out to timidly knock. And, hey, maybe she might even get a chance to meet his lover. He or she might as well be a really pleasant person, given how cool of a guy Sabin was.
Chubbs was cuddled up with Joliette in their comfy bed. he almost had her cuddled up like a small toy. His arms and legs wrapped around her, holding her close to him as he nuzzled her cheek in his sleep. Chubbs felt the slightest bit of peace in her arms, something only she could bring. It wasn't music that soothed the savage best, it was a good woman.
His peace was soon broken though, as a nagging feeling started pulling him out of his deep slumber, like someone tugging on his sleeve. Eventually he roused his senses and the sounds of tapping entered his ears. It took him a moment to realise it was someone at the door, and with a groan of annoyance he shuffled his way out of bed rubbing his eyes.
" Yeah yeah, hold on"
Scratching his chin, Chubbs made his way to the door and unlocked it before pulling it open. He didn't realise till it was too late that he forgot to put some pants on in his sleepy state.
Chubbs had left her, she shivered slightly mostly asleep herself and pulled the cover up tighter around herto stave off the chill that hit when the breeze of hte open door blew across her partially scaley skin. She opened an eye slowly and only partially to figure out where he went "David?" she murmurs not having heard the door
As Kaveri waits at the door, she takes a step back as she hears what seems to be the sound of claws tapping on the floor from the inside. Hey, maybe they own a dog or something? She takes in a nervous breath, holding her arms behind her back.
Then, the door opens. What Kaveri sees is someone who is quite not Sabin, and quite... large. She can't make out much because it's so dark, but she tries to look up into the largely-built man's face. She forces an awkward smile, arching her brows and, again, finding it difficult not to stare. Was she just seeing things, or was this man excessively hairy?
"H-hi..! My name is Kaveri, and I was told to visit here. Y-you must be Sabin's lover, right? Is he home right now?"
Way to be completely and utterly awkward, Kavvi.
Chubbs first blinked at the fact there was someone here he'd never seen before, then now realising he was naked, blushed a little. But what shocked him most of all was what she said to him....Sabin's lover? Chubbs looked at Joliette like the woman outside was a complete look, then he looked back to this Kaveri, shut his eyes tight, shook his head and looked at her like she had said the "n" word to a black guy.
" What the ******** stepped down from the door and left it open and peered back inside, looking at Joliette.
" I think that a*****e's been at it again"
Chubbs grabbed his hair in frustration a moment, and looked Kaveri over. She'd seen him naked now, he should go cover up, but he was boggled at what this one had just said to him.
" You have to be new here"
Joliette pulled the sheet around herself and sat up, she was decent, "What the gormless arse do this time..." then it hit her what the woman had said and a slew of very british accented french words came tumbling from her lips rather quickly, not a single one of them nice or polite and all of them directed at the git.
Of all the things she could have said, she had to mention the "Sabin's lover" thing. She should have listened to Bobby! Her eyes widen with fear, knowing that she's probably screwed up big time.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!!" Kaveri blurts, covering her mouth. She's clearly embarassed by it, but she should have expected some kind of initiation prank or something as a formal welcome to the commune. She'd have to plot something to get back at the b*****d now!
And in what could be a rather unexpected reaction, Kaveri begins to laugh - it's nervous, uneasy laughter. "That guy is such a jerk! Oh, man... yeah, I'm new around here. I guess that 'lover' thing was some kind of a joke to pull my leg since I'm fresh meat and all," she looks away, still giggling.
Hey, maybe her laughter could lighten up the situation - the folks in this duplex don't seem to be particularly amused. Then again, her laughter probably wouldn't help at all and make things worse. She could hear another voice, but couldn't see anyone beyond Chubbs - not that the lack of light could really help her see anything beyond vague outlines, really.
"I'm really sorry about that, I should have expected to have something like this happen," she apologizes again, admitting to her gullibility.
Chubbs blinked and looked up at Kaveri like the girl was completely insane... he was boggled. How in the hell could she be giggling, this wasn't funny, this place was nothing to laugh at. She was new and all buthow could she stand there laughing? Chubbs turned to Joliette and rubbed his temples and sighed.
" Ya know I hate explaining everything to people"
Looking at Kaveri, he reached over and put a hand on her should, as much as he wanted to grip it really tightly, he just wanted to have some control. Much as the woman agitated him, she was going to get a rude awakening and he wanted to be ready in case she ran or fainted.
" Look... Sabin isn't a jerk... he's demon bile... and if given the chance, I'd take these..."
Chubbs then held up his other hand to her face, and displayed the row of claws on his finger tips. He wanted her to get a close look.
" ... And I'd sink them into his chest where his black heart USE to be"
Maybe it was the fact his sleep was disturbed, or the fact she called him Sabin's lover. But Chubbs wasn't in a good mood and his diplomatic skills were out the window.
Joliette's words slowed and quieted, she knew the french man would likely have heard her, seen her and understood her but she couldn't care less. She slipped from the bed sheet and all and made sure she wasn't in sight as she slipped an over-sized shirt on that david had let her use , it hid her quite well, she walked to the door ducking under his arm and looking a thte laughing woman "The arse you refer to is a doctor here, a rather twisted one actually" she said her yellow forked tongue flicking and bringing the woman's scent to her.
She wondered just how many new people Moreau was bringing to the isle. Rubbing sleep from her eye she rests a hand on David maybe it would calm maybe it wouldn't, she didn't really care just then. She was angry at the lover comment too, but it did't do for them both to give into the predator's anger
Denial was Kaveri's only protection here. If she kept denying everything, it wasn't real... right? The fearful laughter subsides, and she immediately tenses up as she feels the heavy, clawed hand on her shoulder.
"Don't tell me," she says, her voice small and barely audible, "I was told this before... I didn't believe it... I don't know if I still do, honestly, I'm hoping this is just a ******** dream that will go away when I wake up..."
She swallows hard, wincing and looking away as Chubbs puts his claws in her face. Squeezing her eyes shut, she can feel the tears forming as those claws, without even actually cutting into her or otherwise touching her, were rending away the only thing she had keeping herself under the illusion for so long: her denial.
She could keep saying it was a dream, it was a hallucination, but no. She could feel the hand on her shoulder. The fact that she could feel proved that this was no joke. This was no dream at all, and hell, it's not even a nightmare, it's worse than that.
This... this thing was real. Her illusion is lost. This is no commune.
Kaveri couldn't bring herself to say anything. Not even a half-assed apology, not even an utterance on her disbelief. She couldn't even move, she just stood completely still.
After a very long silence, she speaks, her eyes focusing on the sharp claws protruding from Chubbs' furry fingers.
"You were once people, weren't you?" She turns to look up at Chubbs and Joli with wide, liquid eyes. She's trembling with fear, holding her hand to her face. "Am I... is this going to happen to me, too?" She can feel her legs going weak, and an overwhelming sensation of dread rising up from her gut.
Chubbs felt the soft touch of Joliette on his arm, it was something to snap him out of his small bout of temper. Then the girl crying really made him feel ashamed of himself. He hated feeling like a monster, and it seemed everyday he was reminded about it. Looking towards Joliette he brushed his finger along her cheek and looked back to Kaveri. He listed to her question, wondering how best to explain it all. But right now he needed some pants and thought it best to move everything inside. He shifted hs hand to place on Kaveri's back and tried to usher her to the door.
" Look why don't we go sit down and let me get some pants on and have a talk alright?"
Joliette smiles and nods "Come in, theres a lot about this isle that they dont tell you when you come" she agrees and steeps back into the unit heading for a chair
Kaveri trembles, nervously reaching up to twirl a finger in one of the dreadlocks hanging in her face. "A-alright," she stammers, following Chubbs and Joli inside.
"I might as well hear it all," she sighs, rubbing at her eyes with a chubby hand, looking for a place to sit down. She's feeling really weak and vulnerable right now, but there is nothing that she can really do about it.
Kaveri slumps her shoulders, opting to sink into the couch and prop her chin up on the elbows placed in her lap. "It's becoming more and more clear to me that this commune wasn't what I was promised," she says, then pauses to reconsider what she had said. "Actually, they did give me what was promised: A home, a bed, and never having to run from the cops or deal with getting arrested or having to pay fines again. But they never told me about... about the animals."
She looks at the floor, staring at her feet. "I should have listened to that lady," she says to herself, shaking her head.
"Does this happen to everyone that comes here?" She straightens up, leaning back to hold her hand out look at it. "Will my fingers be tipped in claws one day as well?" And as quickly as that one shell of denial is ripped away, Kaveri mentally starts building another one to replace it: I am not going to become an animal. I am somehow different. This WON'T happen to me and I will stay the same, no matter what anyone says!
She huffs and puts her hand down, leaning back into the couch and looking at Chubbs and Joli expectantly. She might as well start getting used to people who weren't entirely human in appearance, that seems to be the theme surrounding the poor people living on this horrible island. "Well," she says, "let's hear it."
Chubbs lead Joliette inside and stroked her back softly as he followed her in behind and closed the door. Turning a light on, He went over to a pile of folded clothes on top of a dresser and pulled out a pair of black cargo shorts and quickly slipped them on before sitting on the edge of the bed. He reached out and took Joliette's hand in his own, he thought he'd at least try to look less than a monster.
" Sorry bout the nude thing... I er... was kinda tired and didn't realise."
Chubbs rubbed the back of his head, looking as awkward as he did with the girl he met the other day. He didn't need another fainter or someone pointing and screaming.
" Okay...believe us... this ain't easy tah explain. This islands like, some great big freakin experiment. People get tricked here and s**t and they inject ya and dump ya round here. Yeah... I am... was... well um... human... Names Chubbs.. I use to live in Brooklyn, but I came there from Australia. This Doctor Moreau guy said I could come here to win some cash in a boxing bout. Course that was all s**t"
"I came here by boat looking tinto the rumor about a actor thats here and got tricked to come ashore and got stuck here, I got here just before David did. I'm Joliette, I'm from Britain" she explained this to the woman "Everyone here is becoming something different, some kind of animal" she says quietly in her British accent
"Nah, it's cool," Kaveri dismissively waves a hand, setting it down on the armrest. "A little nudity isn't gonna hurt anyone." Not even if they're scary animal-men.
She does admit, though, that Chubbs and Joli are rather unsettling to look at. Oh, well. It'll start feeling normal with time, which is actually kind of disturbing in itself because the island and its inhabitants are hardly normal.
Kaveri strokes her chin thoughtfully, crossing her legs and resting her other hand on her knee. "I've heard a little about it from Miss Bobby -- do you know her? -- and I didn't believe her at first. Those shots they give you turn you into an animal," she says, her expression quickly turning into an angry one as she raises her voice, "And they're experiments? How incredibly ******** up! What's the point to these 'experiments'? This bullshit doesn't benefit society at all! What research does this... this... ******** 'doctor' want to get out of this?"
The hand on her knee balls up into a fist, and she pounds it on her thigh, sitting up bolt-straight. "I'm so tired of this unethical bullshit! It's one thing to ******** with animals, but to ******** with people? Who allows this s**t to happen?" She narrows her eyes, combing her brain for an answer to her own questions. "The ******** government," she hisses, every word dripping with venom.
"I was told this place was a commune where I could live off the land in peace," she says, shaking her head, "and live without having to deal with getting s**t for believing that having a place to live should be a priveledge, not a right. Those ******** bastards... They promised paradise to me."
She turns to glare at Chubbs and Joli, holding out an arm and making a sweeping gesture. "Does this look like paradise to you? I ******** fell for it, too!"
For a long moment, Kaveri is silent save for the sound of her breathing, and still holding her arm out. She slumps back into the couch, letting her arm drop to her side, rubbing her face in attempt to calm down. "Goddamnit... I'm sorry. My name is Kaveri. I'm from Olympia."
Chubbs stared at Kaveri and held Joliette's hand in his own, listening to the pent up outburst she let fly. He wasn't expecting that kind of reaction really, but maybe that was her way. Chubbs didn't know what to include after that small rant, but he tried.
" Tell me about it"
At the time it wasn't the best thing he could have said, but it was the best thing he had on him at the time. Chubbs nodded and was going to smile at Kaveri, least he tried to while keeping his mouth closed. Possibly seeing his teeth right now might put her off.
" I dunno a Bobby, least I don't think I do... there's so many to keep track of now days. Yeah they really do bullsh*t ya here, you hear anyones story, we've nearlly all been hoodwinked."
Chubbs scratched his chin thoughtfully and wondered what to say at all. Under the circumstances, she was taking it rather well.
" We are all different species.. so it's hard to know what you get... they've even managed to get me with three animals. If ya ever want to know, use ya intercom."
"Oh yeah, use the intercom, love that was a right good suggestion" she said with a hint of sarcasm in her voice. She shook her head "I'm sorry I avoid the intercom, and David here has already put his fist through one. And the reason behind both is that gormless arse Sabin. He's right though we all have been tricked, they lured me off my yacht with the promise of an exclusive for a new movie supposedly to star Vasile DiRossi... That too was a rouse" her tongue flickered, it was instinct and she most often did little to stop it.
Kaveri is... temperamental. There's a very, very long list of things that set her off, and the subject of ethics is one of her many hotbuttons.
She clears her throat, forcing an awkward smile back. "I don't know if I'd want to hear the stories from other people who've gotten ******** over by the labs," she says in a fairly even tone, "it'll just piss me off even more, and maybe want to find that doctor ******** and kick his a**... but not after thanking him for providing me with free food and housing. For being such an a*****e, he does seem to spoil us. At least we aren't kept in cages or anything like that."
Kaveri arches her brows at Chubbs, surprised. "Three animals? What the hell, which ones?" She would have guessed different kinds of bears, judging by the claws and the fur.
Then she looks at Joli, "The intercom? I've never used it. But I guess it's a bad idea..?"
Vasile DeWho? Kaveri had been so detached from the media that the name didn't sound familiar at all. She hadn't been to a movie theatre, save for the independently-run Capitol, for years. Her brows furrow, and she knits her fingers in her lap. "Yeah... I guess we've all been screwed. And they know how to drag people over here, by offering us stuff that's been too good to be true."
"Figured it was a ******** scam, though..." She mutters to herself, shaking her head. Kaveri is used to being shat on by life, but this was just ridiculous.
Chubbs looked at the floor, he knew all too well the feeling of getting back at the doctors, and even though it was a dumbass suggestion, he wanted Kaveri to have the option of the intercom if she wanted it.
" You'll find well... they are a sneaky bloody bunch. If they come near us, you never know it... and well... as for violence.."
Chubbs sighed, he didn't like the fact he actually wanted to hurt people, but the other part of him believed to do it would bring him so much joy, it scared him. He felt the brunt of their security measure, it really did work.
" ..You'll find that if ya start breakin out the scuffles with either the staff or the islanders... you'll be unconcious in seconds."
Chubbs thought about that for a moment, and realised it may sound like he would punch her out.
" What I mean to say is .. umm.. they done something to uss.. I heard chips in our head... that like, all they have to do is say the right words and it'll knock you flat on ya a**. Me and Joli here both copped it"
Chubbs then looked down at himself and then at his clawed hand and ran his thumb claw over the rest of them.
" I have wolverine, tazmanian devil and grizzly bear in me... it's not a good combination...I've been changing for the worse."
He looked up with a serious look, he was scared for him and everyone as of late.
" Just a warning.. if I look pissed, try and avoid me... and uh, don't ever run away.. it's been getting hard to control things lately"
Joliette sighed "Animal instincts are hard I hope you get something that isn't too horrible, so far we have a snake, an iguana, a wolf, a bat, a cheetah, a sea lion, a hedgehog and a few others that I've met, I"m sure there are still islanders I've not met yet, as many units that are full... thats how many subjects are here minus one." She looked up at David for a time giving him a soft smile. It's not fun..." she looks back to the new islander "some have come to accept it, most of us just want to return home and be human again" she says... her voice never getting very loud
"That's mighty nice of 'em," Kaveri rolls her eyes in response to the 'security measure,' crossing her arms over her chest. "They turn you into these ******** up things and don't give you all a chance to fight back. I should have expected no less from a so-called 'doctor'... I ******** hate what technology has become."
She leans forward, interested in hearing what Joli and Chubbs have to say. Knowing the reputation of those three animals, she gets the impression that this combination would be a very rough one on the poor man. "That's awful," she says, shaking her head, "and thank you for that warning. I hope I never get to see you angry..."
Some of the animals Joli lists are some she's heard mentioned from Bobby before. "The more I hear about this, the more I am led to believe that this is less of an island and more of some ******** zoo," she remarks, wrinkling her nose with disgust and shaking her head. "Except the animals are people, innocent, regular people being forced into the mold of an animal. It's so... so ******** pointless. What is this going to prove? What is the point of these 'experiments'?"
She hasn't even met this 'Doctor Moreau' and she is already starting to hate him. In her mind, he is the epitomized faceless scientist in some dark old movie-style laboratory with caged up animals, blinking electric lights, countless buttons and levers, and colorful test tube racks - and on a table behind him is Frankenstein, for no particular reason.
Chubbs sighed and nodded again, agreeing about it all. It was effed up, it didn't make sense at all. As far was Chubbs had worked out, Moreau and Sabin and the rest of the staff were nerds with a torture fetish and a big bank account. He'd imagine that every horrible act that happened to them all was like porn to the staff, bunch of freakin sick bastards.
" Sorry this is a lot to handle at once, I don't like doing this, I'm horrible at it. Just thought ya needed to know what was going on before ya had a mental snap"
"I can't say I honestly know what they are trying to prove except that they CAN do it and that they like playing God" Joliette frowned at the thought. "Being the one to tell another person what is going on here isn't fun, even if it's telling for not the first time. Most often one isn't believed until it happens to them" she admits and looks up at David remembering skirting the issue with him not wanting to tell the truth of the place to him when she first met him.
For all that it mattered to Kaveri, all scientists were like that: Sadistic dorks with a big budget. She shakes her head slowly, tiredly rubbing at her temples. "Nah, it's cool. I'd normally say I've been through worse, but... y'know, honestly, I can't think of anything that can top this s**t. It's like I'm on the set of some B movie."
"This is why I hate most scientists," Kaveri says to Joli, "they do this unethical bullshit -- and get away with it -- just because they can, and not for the benefit of society. If these assholes cared about the rest of us, I'm sure we wouldn't have to deal with s**t like cancer anymore, and instead, we have some island in the middle of ******** nowhere filled with people turning into animals."
For now, she pretends to not even hear the part about others not believing it until it actually happens to them. Currently, Kaveri is a part of that crowd -- or rather, she believes it, she just doesn't want to acknowledge the existance of the fact that she's going to become a beast-person. Denial is such a wonderful defense mechanism (no sarcasm intended, really).
" Yeah, I know the feeling, now at least. I don't like hating people too, and that makes me hate em even more"
Chubbs mummbled under his breath a few choice words anf then began to yawn. He did his best to cover up up his mouth to hide the rows of teeth. He couldn't hide the sound though, it sounded like a lion yawning, and he blinked and blushed a little.
" Yeah, ya think they could find some better use for their... well I hate to say it.. talent. It doesn't make any sense at all."
Chubbs had thought bout it for a while, all he could think of wast he Moreau was making some kind of new super soldier for the military. Guys that could swin like sharks and hold their breaths for hours. People as fast as cheetahs, Guys that were as strong as bears and wolves and tigers. Or had he gone completely mad and believed this was our next stage of evolution?
"I dont think they would even try to find a different use, they seem rather... set in their ways, even one of their staff that ticked them off is now among out numbers turning into something. Theres no escape even for them" Joliette sighed and then chuckled slightly at David's yawn. Her yellow tongue flickered and her stomach grumbled "I think I need to find something to eat before I get too hungry" she says quietly knowing what could easily happen if she didn't
Yawning is contagious. As Chubbs yawns, as frightening as it sounds, Kaveri soon follows suit. "Hate is such a strong feeling," Kaveri says, "but damnit, some bastards deserve it."
And whatever the reason it is Moreau has for doing this, chances are Kaveri won't approve. She doesn't really approve of anything else, anyways. "These ******** turn on their own selves, too? And they want us to be the animals," the woman gives a haughty laugh, looking at Joli just as she flicks her tongue.
...okay, that's a little creepy. She blinks a few times, forcing an awkward smile.
"Well, alright guys. It's getting kinda late, I should probably let you two go," she says, getting up, "It was nice meeting you two. I might come back and visit later when it isn't so dark out and my head isn't so... screwed up from this heap of an island."
Kaveri arches her back and stretches upward, reaching for the ceiling. "I'll be seeing ya around, yeah?"
Chubbs nodded and raised a brow at Joliette's stomach and smirked, somewhat amused. He softly ran a paw like hand along Joliette's hair and slowly got to his feet. He thought about offering Kaveri a hand to shake, it was an old habit hard to break. He decided against it, for her ownn sake and instead, shuffled to the door to open it for her.
" Yeah, feel free to drop by from time to time... hope ya have a better evening than this one later"
Chubbs smiled a little, trying not to expose his teeth too much.
"Well circumstances could be better but it was nice to meet you... You keep sane and don't let this island get to you too much" Joliette didn't get up from the couch but nodded and gave the woman a weak smile.
