But it's not even a common word.

It's the name of Hawaii's national fish. XD

It's usually French for me, too.

On the greeting thing: to my family's everlasting annoyance and embarrassment, I tend to greet people with a cheerfully Latin 'Salve!'

...when you're relaxing to a favorite song and you think to yourself 'those sybilants really sound nice...and I love the way her liquids come out...'

I saw this post first when I came into the htread and I was like "Isn't that the really long 'huma' thing?" surprised
Then I checked back a page.

Oh; I only greet my FAMILY in French. When it comes to other people, it's usually 'Zdrastvujte!' (Russian).

...when the acquisition of a brand new GIANT French-English dictionary leaves you excessively giddy. mad D

...when you almost cry when you find out that the language section at your local bookstore has SHRUNK. crying crying crying

...when you happily spent $130 dollars on books in French, and you would have happily spent the rest of your money had they had more French books in stock.

I'm guilty of all of these. cool

XP I know.

I thought about quoting Proudly just so that people know what I'm talking about, but I'm too lazy. ><

At least it's a long word that you can actually pronounce! surprised

Linguistic terms. Sybilants are consonants wherein you make the sound by allowing air to pass over your lips. (Think 's' and 'z,' to use English examples.) Liquids are consonants that can be sounded continuously and with minimum friction in the mouth. The English liquids are 'l' and 'r.'

I'm way more interested in being a linguist than I am in being a translator. surprised

xp

I would steal the grade 12 French textbook just for the hell of it, but my French teacher scares me. ninja

...you think French doesn't have enough verb conjugations. domokun

For those of you who don't speak French: as far as I can tell, French has more irregular verbs than it does regular ones. Not only that, but French also has 22 tenses, litterally (not counting the passive voice thingy). Or maybe more, but I know 22 of them.

That is not nearly enough for me crying There should be more irregular verbs, and more tenses! ninja

So I decided to take it. It was nothing advanced, but I thought it'd be a good review and fun! My friend next to me was craking up. surprised

Yeah I know what you mean. Spanish has MAAAAANY verb tenses too. But anyway, I'm NOT a bad girl! I swear! I'm gonna return it soon! @_@
