Hello everyone, I'm really excited to be here. Only a year ago I was introduced to a small organic butterfly and hummingbird garden and I have to say, it's really had a huge impact on me. I've been working with herbs and their medicinal uses, learning about wild edibles and providing habitat for some amazing animals. I currently live in NY, with my husband and son, both of which I acquired rather young smile

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone and thank you all for having me here.

Welcome to the guild! I'm just getting into herbs as well. I have quite a few that should pop up in the spring - lavender, mint, lemon balm (started from seed!) and catnip (also seed!). heart

Thank you! Catnip is one of my favorite herbs, not just because when I make a tea with it, my cats flip out for some free entertainment, but I find it to be very calming. I really do enjoy the mints. Unfortunately, the way my home is situated, we don't get a lot of good sunlight, so I won't be starting from seed (they just don't do well), but will transplant some from the butterfly garden (it can take over, aggressive little buggers).

If I didn't run out of honey, I'd be sipping on some right now!

Hello! I'm a child of the 80s. I enjoy walking, reading, repurposing and crafting. One of my favorite things to do is composting -- take garbage, turn into superior soil, it's natural magic! -- which I can no longer do now that I live in an urban neighborhood, rather than the suburbs.

I've generally tried to live in a more eco-friendly way, not because of some grim political activist leaning, but because it makes sense. Walk or bike to nearby locations, because it's easy exercise. Use the curly lightbulbs, not because a politician told you to, but because they save on electricity. Use public resources like the library, instead of blowing $40 at the movies -- not that you can't do that too, but why not take advantage of checking out DVDs, make some snacks, and invite friends over? More fun, more comfortable, better food, and you can talk to each other during the movie without annoying others.

Oh, and I like to ramble. redface

Hello~ I'm Milk. I'm a female who has just entered post-secondary and enjoys knitting, reading, drinking tea, and gardening for reward (food ;D - I'm not particularly fond of flower gardening unless it's a flower I can use in tea or cooking/baking (borage!)). That being said I'm here because of three main interests: gardening, earth friendly (and non-brand name) house cleaning, and an interest in moving as off the grid as possible (in the future since I'm living with others at the moment and don't own my own place quite yet).

So far I've started trying to make my own tea. I have some dried red raspberry leaves (I was pleasantly surprised that that part of the plant could be used). It has a nice mild taste. I think I'm going to start growing a mint (perhaps catnip) to pair with it. Maybe lemon grass. I'm interested in the proper way to dry orange peel, which oranges to use, and its storage. I bought a tea that uses orange peel and I rather enjoy it.

Ahh... I think that's enough rambling from me. sweatdrop

Hi there! I'm Whirrr or Clicky or whatever you'd like to call me, I'm not picky. I'm a 23 year old lady-thing who is ridiculously excited about finding this guild (thank you to pirhan!) because it encompasses a huge chunk of my everyday obsessions. My fiancee and I just moved to a really really small town in Saskatchewan (more of a village really), and I'm really excited at the prospect of all the future things we have planned for our lovely new home. We already have our first garden, and eventually I'm hoping to turn the front porch into a sun room that I can fill with herbs and other such things.

As my mother raised me, I'm a total health nut, and love cooking, baking, and exploring new flavours in teas. I also love reading, drawing, playing video games, physical labour, and I've been meaning to get into knitting...but my attention span. D: Ohgawd. I find that I have an easier time getting into a new hobby if I have someone to learn along with me, so if anyone is interested let me know!!!

Hopefully sometime this summer or when my seasonal job ends in the fall I will be signing up for an online course in order to become a holistic nutritional therapist. I am super psyched about the prospect of it...and I am going to need case studies! I have a feeling you guys might be able to help me out? Ehhh? ;D

Anyways, yeah. That's a taste of me.
I'm also really shy and have a hard time approaching conversations! But I love making new friends! So feel free to pm me!

OOH! Can I ask you a question? I was looking at some fairly rural areas in Sk myself (there's a bright blue house in Kamsack I've had my eye on for months - it has no yard though so it's a no-go), but my fiance is worried about finding work. Did one/both of you already have a job lined up before you moved, or are you winging it?
I am having a hard time figuring out how to line up a job in advance from so many provinces away, when so few of the businesses have a web presence. Also, none of these places have hotels, so we couldn't even really go for a job-hunting trip before-hand to do interviews. It seems like a tricky situation, to me. Any tips would be super loved.

Well, Mike already had a job in a town about 25 minutes from where we were moving to. Not that it really mattered, because his job takes him away from home for ten days at a time for the summer anyways...but it's really convenient for him when he's just working in the shop. Sooo that's pretty much why I was looking in the area I ended up searching in.

However, with me...we were just winging it. If you move during the summer months, chances are a few businesses around town may be looking for some help, and if not, they'll have information regarding whether anyone in the nearby countryside needs any. I got lucky when we got here. The bar had already heard that I had loads of cooking experience, so they snatched me up right away. Working from summer through winter with them helped me meet a lot of business owners from inside and outside of town, and eventually ended up with me getting an in at the provincial park about twenty minutes away.

It's all going to differ from town to town, but from what I've seen, as long as you try to get your name out there and that you're inquiring about jobs, you shouldn't have too much trouble. Everyone knows everyone's business. You might have to pick up a couple temporary jobs before you find something you like though, so keep that in mind.

Glad to hear someone's interested in moving out to small town Sask. P: It's freaking beautiful out here...and affordable. I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else!

<.< And just so you know, my next door neighbour is totally selling their house here in Bulyea. It has a huge yard.
Just sayin'. ;D

We are trying to figure out where to move once we can. I have been fluctuating between wanting small towns in either the prairies or the maritimes for a while now. Prairies are closer to where I already am (bc), but in the maritimes, there are these gorgeous century-old homes, and you can essentially get a mansion for the price of an apartment by me. It's going to be a tough call when we have to make that choice, but for now I just look at both.

And that is truly a tiny town! Strangely, more expensive than what I have been seeing. You would think that the smaller the town, the cheaper the house, but it's not always true.

Oooo the maritimes are beautiful. I totally suggest going there...especially considering the house prices are insanely cheap in comparison. Especially if you look at PEI.
Unfortunately I think that the job market isn't quite as vast out there...we get a lot of maritimers heading this way to work on the rigs and in kitchens.

Haha yes it is.
I have no idea why the people who are selling their houses here are asking for so much. They're not going to get it. The house is going to end up sitting on the market for a few years before they finally fold and down the price a bit. Though my neighbours did put a lot of time and money into the house they're selling. The house that I bought was not nearly in that price range, but it does need a lot of work.

Whee~ First post~

I like planting things! Especially peppers. Right now I have ghosts, habaneros, arbol, jalapenos and others. I mostly think they're really cute. I dry them and hang them as decorations mostly and they help keep animals from everything else. I also like flowers, especially designer petunias right now, which I can't really afford, but hey.

I also sew and make plushies and jewelry and paint and whatnot.
