I watch anime on megavideo ;o; Megaupload and co. were down in Hong Kong (due to it being based there...), so it's no big loss for me in that sense, but it angers me that the FBI can just shut down a company that isn't based in the USA. At least ask the ICAC (HK anti--corruption organisation, unaffiliated to government) to find the CEO/COO/extradite him!

A few things, first is that they currently do have the power to do this under current copy right law. Since Megaupload had U.S. based servers they fell partly into U.S. Jurisdiction. So after compiling their case the FBI went and got arrest warrants and worked together with the police forces inside of the other countries where Megaupload has servers and had those organizations make the arrests on the employee's and then extradite them. So those countries had to be willing to cooperate.
The key difference between this and SOPA/PIPA is those bills would have allowed the piss ants at the MPAA to go to a judge, get a court order and then require that not only the U.S. based servers be shut down but that US ISP's block their customers from accessing Megauploads foreign servers but that ad companies cease business with them and that search engines block the webpage from their results. Thereby allowing the MPAA to strangle it financially with almost no due process. Or for the feds could do it but I'm sure the MPAA would have done it first. It also has the broader implications that if say I put a copy right video in my profile that Gaia would be shut down.
Next up. Megavideo is part of the Megaupload entity so it is also down.
I guess finally they're charged with "racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement." Are they guilty? Maybe. Is it enough to convince other countries to just work with the U.S.? Apparently.

Yes, Copyright laws are already dodgy with "you created it, it's now copyrighted..." crap. I like it, but SOPA would abuse the s**t out of it...
