Miyuki thought about it, she had a lot of uncles, so she never referred to any of them by just 'uncle'. This sounded much easier though.

"Nako-tol!"

"Nako-tol it is," Eldrin chuckled. "Now that that's settled, what can I do for you? It's been quite a long walk up here, are you hungry?"

"Nana-tol always has some sort of treats," Earendil winked at Miyuki. "What do you say we go see his house?"

"You live up here?" Miyuki asked in awe.

This was a long way up and she couldn't imagine anyone coming up here that often even though there were many trainees training at the moment.

Eldrin grinned. "Indeed I do," he affirmed, heading off towards the training facility. "My house is carved right out of the rock of the mountain. No need to even build it! And I'm never lonely, look at all the people I have to keep me company!"

He gestured towards the trainees just as they disappeared from sight.

"My sister, your grandmother, she keeps telling me I need a wife and a family," he went on. "But I've no time for that."

Lin got this thoughtful look on her face before replying, "I have the funny feeling you probably told me the same when I first came up here. That Luthien has been telling you, you need to be married."

Of course just like now, back then Eldrin rarely got off the mountain. He was indeed always busy training other people, it was a never ending job.

"How long ago was that?" Miyuki asked her mommy with interest.

Miyuki didn't know that the trainees would eventually not come up onto the mountain anymore once they were done their training, so to her he didn't look lonely at all.

"Oh..." she looked at Earendil, "You were fourteen when we first met?"

Since that was also the same year she met Earendil for the first time.

Earendil nodded. "So it's been at least seventy five years since then," he grinned. "Time does have a way of flying, doesn't it?"

Eldrin chuckled as he led them through the facility and to his house, the same modest stone house that it had been since Lin had known him. Two simple rooms, one with a table and chair, the other with a bed and dresser. But outside of the house (or cottage, really) there was a storage area, and it was here that he headed for his promised treats.

"The passage of time really doesn't matter," he commented as he brought out a small wooden box. "My life is fulfilling enough."

Lin grinned at that, "As long as you're happy."

Really the passage of time was just more startling for her, to have known Earendil for that long was kind of amazing.

"Indeed," Eldrin smiled. "Come, let's go in. The hottest part of the day is over, but it's still quite warm outside. Inside is much better."

The stone walls reflected most of the heat away, despite the glass-less windows.

He led them over to his house and inside. "I'm sorry I don't have much furniture for you to sit on," he apologized, "but it's so rare that I have company."

"That's okay, I can sit on ada's lap," Miyuki chirped happily.

Which she figured would give her mommy and daddy enough room to sit. Besides she liked to be able to sit on his lap while she still could.

In the end, they spent the afternoon there, and when they were back in the palace for dinner, Earendil introduced his parents to Miyuki as her nako and neko - it made more sense than using the English, which she might confuse with her Gaian grandparents.

The rest of the week was less busy than the first day, and they got a bit of visiting in, and on the last day of the week a messenger arrived at the palace with a message for Lin: her custom design from Aranhil was complete.

Lin was relieved to know that the design was done, now all she had to do was get it. Lin brought her bag with her, even though she knew she had enough (she rarely spent her money), she brought her bag just in case.

"We're going to get the surprise?" Miyuki asked as they hurried on out.

"That's right," Lin replied ushering Miyuki along, she supposed she could have left Miyuki with someone, but she didn't really want to.

The thought made her cringe inside because she was starting to sound like her father every time Lin felt like she couldn't leave Miyuki alone.

In good time they arrived at the shop.

Miyuki bounded in, excited because she wanted to see what her mommy had ordered that would go to her ada.

Aranhil was once again behind the counter (he had been gone all week, his father in his place), and he smiled widely when he saw Lin and Miyuki entering the shop.

"I'm glad to see that my messenger made it through," he greeted them, his tone relieved. "It's hard to know whether or not someone will be let into the castle. Welcome."

"Why?" Miyuki asked curious.

Lin didn't ask the same question because when she thought about it, it made sense. Sometimes she forgot being allowed to come and go freely that most people couldn't.

"Not everyone is allowed into the castle," Lin explained to Miyuki.

The little girl blinked and then replied with, "Why?"

"The danger," Aranhil replied simply, smiling at Miyuki. "There are people who do not like the Queen, despite the good that she is doing, and there may be people who wish to hurt or even kill her - or others of the royal family. That is why also inside the castle, there are many guards. In case someone does get in, they will hopefully be caught before anything bad happens."

Miyuki blinked and looked thoughtfully at that. She couldn't really understand why anyone would want to do that, but if they needed protection, then it would make sense.

"Oh... okay...."

Lin smiled and patted Miyuki on the head, "I know, some people do not make much sense at times."

There were many awful things in the world that didn't make sense, but that was the nature of people sometimes.

"Some people are weird."
