Space Marines or Orks, both are in the Black Reach boxed set so I'd say those two are the best shot at a good beginners army. Especially the Orks, they are nigh on unstoppable.

From what I've read about the AoBR set is that the Dreadnought isn't very detailed.
I've ordered the AoBR box, and it comes with I believe something like 15 SM troops and like 25 Orks.

10 tractical beakies including flamer, missile launcher and veteran sergant 5 Terminator beakies including a sergant 1 dreadnaugh with multiflamer (it's as detailed as a normal dreadnaught) 1 space marine captain with bolter and power sword/relic blade (because of the sheer size)
20 ork choppa boyz, including 2 big shootas 3 deffkoptas with twinlinked shootas 5 nobz 1 ork warboss with shoota (twinlinked shoota), power klaw, cybork body and possible 'eavy armour, it's plated 'nuff to be a 4+ save though according to all ork players out there, and I can go with it.
It's rumoured about a new start pack as well with beakies and orkz~

Apart from saying not Dark Eldar, Necrons or Daemons, no one has really given me much of an answer. I'm not going to buy a starter set just to get models from two armies my friends have, like I said. I want something different.

Then just go buy something different since you won't listen to us? ;D
As we've said, orks and marines are the best army for starters, they can be used in simple or advanced ways when you've gotten into the game.
I don't see why you complain about having the same army as one of your friends though... I got plenty marine players at my club, several ork players and some nid players, none complain when facing another force like they have, me myself just love bashing other orks showing who's da boss! KRUMP!

I'm not trying to complain and I understand that obviously no matter what army I choose there's going to be a lot of people I play against with the same one. I just like variety and being different.

Might I suggest then that you visit your local GW shop for a gander at their store armies for inspiration or a trip to the official site with info on each army out there.

But even if you'd play with the same codex as someone else you can still make an individual army.

Exactly. My favorite way of messing with how an army is played is to use an Assault oriented Noise Marine army. Nobody really expects it, especially given that Noise Marines are usually a spam-shooting unit.

Sokiran I don't actually play Warhammer 40k yet, but I've been looking for a store or shop that actually sells it, and trying to decide what army I want to start with. I thought I might do Tau, but they seem too expensive sweatdrop Any help? wll to be honest this entire game/hobby is but i would recommend for a beginer the space marines, they have several pros and cons though Pros: smaller army sizes=lower cost powerful warriors good range of weapon bot close and afar Cons: low numbers mean artillary can ruin your day points expensive to have good units not a cannon fodder army low level of divesity, not alot to do painting of modeling to be honest now for myself i played imperial gaurd and love it, I'm not a cannon fodder person and conservitive war suits me well in matches. now for tau if you really want to play that, you want lots of fire power, meaning broadsides with path finders marking targets, multipul squads of fire warriors, and a large squad or two of kroot to tie up enemies that get to close... the tau it's all range never think you can win in close combat even against Imperial Guard, the a guard platoon could break most of your fire warrior squads in combat, also it cause your units to be unable to fire at the melee. just a few thoughts for you...

For Tau, the army can either be really expensive to buy and field, or relatively inexpensive. On one side, if you take Farsight, you can field a hell of a lot of Crisis suits, which means an expensive army. However, lots of squads of Fire Warriors to pound the ground and tear apart the enemy is great. They're a solid troop choice, they just need to stay far, far away from CC. Hammerheads can become incredibly dangerous choices with a few small points upgrades. 12" move+shoot, treat all terrain as clear ground, etc. They're scary.

If it helps to know, I started playing with the Chaos Space Marine three or four years ago, and not because they're were easy (They weren't for a beginner, to be honest), but because they just looked badass and I loved it. So, my advice is to just pick what you think looks the coolest. XP

Caleidah Player 1 Turn Cast: Mod Revive It's Super Effective! -=Revived to make it spottable by the newfolk.=- Oh you. mrgreen Anyways, to actually add to the topic without restating my point above about appearance... I actually think that a Necron army is a good starter army. They don't have as many options as other armies and are very straightforward, while also throwing in some special rules to get the player used to other armies that do that. Then again, this is me we're talking about saying this...
